Roaming Around Rome

Studying abroad at the American University of Rome with the CIS program was the best thing I have ever done. Throughout the whole process, everyone had been super helpful, whether with answering questions about documents or visa requirements, and even with on-site guidance. My on-site director, Elizabeth, was amazing and super friendly. She was always available to talk to us and help us out.

The events and trips hosted through CIS were incredible. My favorite was the weekend getaway to Orvieto, where we got to explore the quaint and charming hill town filled with beautiful art and history, paired with an incredible experience at a local agriturismo. We also had many events, such as group dinners, a fashion workshop, and a relaxing evening at the spa.

Rome itself is such a beautiful city, as it was super walkable and filled with so much important architecture and artwork. I never felt unsafe in the city and got to experience a new side of the city every day. The food is good, the people are kind, and the sights are really worth seeing. Make sure not miss coming to see the Colosseum at night as much as you can when you study abroad here!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most unfamiliar yet one of the most delicious foods I have ever eaten was wild boar, in steak, pasta, and sandwiches alike. It has one of the best flavors ever and is unlike any other meat I have ever had in my life! Highly highly recommend "Osteria del Cinghiale Bianco" in Florence and "Bottega Vera Orvieto Enoteca con Degustaziona" in Orvieto.
Pros
  • Walkable city and convenient location to everything
  • Experiencing a different culture- slower pace of life, practicing Italian, etc.
  • Historical sites are everywhere
Cons
  • Too short
  • Difficultly contacting the maintence people for the apartment
  • Train strikes happen very often and make travel difficult

The most amazing experience of my life

When I decided to study abroad in Rome with CIS Abroad, I had no idea just how much it would change me. I signed up on my own, far from family, but from the moment I arrived, I knew I was stepping into something extraordinary. What I found was not just a semester abroad, but the most amazing experience ever.

I attended The American University of Rome, where I took courses for my film degree. The school that CIS provided for us was very high quality, but a lot of the learning during study abroad also came from being in the city of Rome. Every cobblestone street carried history, every piazza became a stage of daily life, and every plate of pasta was a lesson in Italian culture.

CIS Abroad made this journey feel both adventurous and safe. Their staff was encouraging, supportive, and always there when we needed guidance. The group trips, cultural activities, and check-ins reminded me that even though I signed up for this study abroad alone, I was never truly on my own.

The most educational and important lessons in my life have come from moving abroad, and having done so several times in the past, my theory has proven to be true time and time again. Moving to Rome taught me Italian cultural norms, Italian political standpoints, religion, history, and I learned so much from the people there. I made friends in unexpected places, and my friends at CIS Abroad have become family.

What I carry most from this experience is growth. I discovered courage I didn’t know I had, independence I never thought I could embrace, and a confidence that will follow me everywhere. Rome taught me not to be afraid of new beginnings, but to celebrate them.

To anyone considering studying abroad: do it. Say yes, even if you’re nervous. The world has so much to teach you, and you’ll come back with stories, friendships, and memories that will stay with you forever

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My biggest piece of advice to future travelers on this program is to listen more than you speak. When you arrive in a new country, everything around you has a story to tell, the people, the culture, the food, even the streets you walk down every day. If you allow yourself to slow down, observe, and truly listen, you’ll find yourself learning lessons you never expected.

Go into your semester with an open mind and a positive attitude, and let the country you’re in change you. Don’t try to make Rome, or anywhere you travel, fit into your idea of home. Instead, let it expand your definition of home. Allow yourself to be shaped by the rhythms of daily life, by conversations with locals, and by the small moments that might seem ordinary at first but will stay with you forever.

The beauty of study abroad is not just what you see, but how it transforms the way you think and who you become. So, be curious, be humble, and let the experience move you in ways you can’t yet imagine.

La Dolce Vita!

My experience studying abroad in Rome was unforgettable. Rome is a city rich in history; with breathtaking views of the Colosseum, Sistine Chapel, and Roman Forum along cobblestone streets. Apart from the famous and well-known artwork and architecture painting the city, finding the hidden gems of the city was the best part. I can tell you where to find the best coffee, pizza, and gelato away from the tourist hot spots. I can tell you how to connect with the local community despite a language barrier. The best part of studying abroad is immersing yourself in all that the city has to offer; for me, that was stepping outside the comfortable and familiar destinations, and allowing myself to assimilate into the community as more than just another tourist. I said some of the hardest goodbyes to the friends and memories I made along the way, but they will never be forgotten. It truly was a sweet life!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-wracking moment I faced was flying internationally for the first time. Before studying abroad, I had never flown alone at all. As excited as I was, I was terrified of losing my passport, missing my flights, misplacing my luggage, etc. It is easy to become consumed by all the negative "what ifs" that you forget about the wonderful possibilities awaiting you on your journey. I didn't overcome my worries right away. It's unrealistic to expect yourself to adapt to so much change at one time. It's important to remind yourself that everything will work out, whether or not it is easy.
Pros
  • Food
  • Walkable
Cons
  • Unpredictable Transit
  • Housing

La Bella Vita

Rome itself was a beautiful city rich with history, good food, and the hustle of city life that I was looking for. The public transportation made daily life very easy and the small size of the program and school I was studying in provided a closer community that made such a big city feel close knit. The classes I was taking were both interesting and of low difficulty allowing for ample time to actually enjoy myself. Cost of living was also lower than I have experienced in the States. The program also provided many excursions and dinners that provided experiences I would not have otherwise had if I were planning everything myself. The location of housing they provided was exactly where one would want to be while visiting Rome and was amongst locals to receive a full immersive experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would say be vigilant of yourself and your belongings but with that being said, I never felt unsafe during my time in Rome. I would also say to do as much as you can while you are there and just be yourself since the semester goes by so fast and you want to get the most out of it.
Pros
  • Easy to meet people and find a close knit community through program trips and school size
  • low cost of living and travel, also easy access to train and airport
  • so much to do and see
Cons
  • Locals could tell I was American and sometimes made me feel a bit like an outsider
  • Have to walk up a lot of stairs to get to class, but made for no need for a gym membership

Rome: My Home Away From Home

Going into the semester, I had very little experience outside the country, in addition, I was going without anyone I had known previously. Thanks to CIS, though, my experience not only went smoothly, but was truly a life changing. To show just how helpful CIS was, the day I was supposed to fly out to Rome, my flight was delayed three times and I missed my connection to Rome. It was rescheduled, but I was a day behind my arrival and was missing my airport pick-up time. I reached out to Elizabeth Tyrie, my CIS on-site director. She got in contact with AUR and my ride from the airport was rescheduled, taking a major worry off my plate. She stayed in contact with me, making sure that I arrived. They were supportive before I had even arrived.

Once I landed all of my other worries quickly disappeared. All but one of my six roommates were with CIS as well, meaning we were able to help each other get our feet on the ground in Rome. The housing, while a bit crowded, ended being much better than I could have even hoped for given the amount of people living in the apartment. I had heard that AUR tends to put students in the same programs together, which wound out working out very well. Rome was also a fantastic place to travel from. The location of my apartment in Trastevere was five minutes from the train station which was a thirty minute ride from the airport. That means I could pack a backpack, go to a new country for the weekend, and be back by sunday. There were also CIS trips and activities organized by Elizabeth, which are discussed more later in the review. I will mention the Going Away dinner she organized before we left, where everyone in our group shared a final meal in Rome together. It was a really nice send off to the semester, not to mention getting to enjoy some absolutely fantastic food.

The academics at American University of Rome suited my needs perfectly. I wanted a few classes that filled my major requirements, which were business classes and political science classes. I also wanted at least one class to learn more about Rome, which AUR also had many offerings for. My professors were really attentive and cared about the material they were teaching. I felt like I could approach them if I needed to and the grading was very fair.

The main point of this review is to emphasize the level of support CIS and my on-site director provided myself and my fellow travelers, as well as emphasize how all the different elements of the experience combined to make such a special time of my life. The bond we built as a group was so special, that Rome went from somewhere I had never been and with no one I knew, to becoming a whole new home to me.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travelers is to go on every single CIS excursion you can. I went to as many as I could, and so many of my best memories from my Rome experience are from these events. These trips familiarized me with the areas within and around Rome and built close friendships with the other members of my group. A group favorite was Orvieto. This was a trip to a town outside of Rome that was located on top of a mountain. We stayed in what would be considered the Italian version of a bed and breakfast. The food was incredible and the experience brought everyone in the group closer together.
Pros
  • Location: Rome has something for everyone. If you want to travel through Europe during your time, Fiumicino Airport offers flights to almost anywhere, and is just a train ride away. If you want try some really excellent food, Rome is the place.
  • American University of Rome: The academics offered at AUR were exactly what I needed for my home university, and the school had decent sized student life, despite the schools small size.
  • People: My on-site director Elizabeth was really helpful and stayed in-contact with our group throughout the entirety of the semester. She also set up the excursions mentioned before, which were fantastic.
Cons
  • City Transport: While the trains were almost always on time, the city busses and trams were unpredictable to put it nicely. They often ran late, or sometimes would not even show up at all. This was not a huge problem since the city was walkable.
  • Housing: Housing was provided by the University. I was fortunate that my six roommates were great, but that can be unpredictable, and the space felt cramped at times.
  • Costs: While the program itself isn't outlandishly expensive (It was cheaper than my tuition at my home university for the semester), studying abroad in general gets expensive, especially if you are traveling as much as I was. Plan accordingly.

Rome was life-changing

When you tell people your ethnicity, do you really know what that entails?
Last fall, I got to experience four months in the place my grandmother, and other relatives lived. Italy. Being Italian American, I had always wished to go to Italy to see what exactly it meant to be Italian. Luckily, I couldn't have experienced it any better, thanks to CISabroad. CISabroad had blessed me with such a phenomenal experience, and as I studied in Rome, I was also learning the culture, food, politics, and social happenings, thanks to my amazing CISabroad advisor. During my stay, I even had the opportunity to play for a football club, competing with and against local Roman men! I have never felt so confident meeting people, going places, and seeing things, and I owe it all to CISabroad.

What would you improve about this program?
I have no ways of improving the program, it was all perfect in my eyes.

Do as the Romans do!

My semester in Rome with CIS was easily my favorite semester of college. A year later, I am reminiscing on the incredible experience I embarked on last January. I immediately felt at home even though I was in a different country because of how the program gets you acclimated to your new city and school. What I thought was really cool about CIS was how they incorporate excursions around Rome and Italy with your group to show you the beauty of your new home at no extra cost. The school was great for my interests, which include international relations and business. Rome proved to be a center location with access to all of Italy and abroad, thanks to the easy-to-use train system and multiple airports within the city. Rome is like a second home to me, I can't wait to go back!

CISabroad review

I chose the Semester in Rome with CISabroad. The pickup from the airport when I arrived was definitely very helpful, especially since I was in an unfamiliar place. The housing location was also very good; close to the city center and many great local places. It was a nice distance from American University of Rome, too, which was appreciated. As for the quality of the program, it was ok. Only 1 excursion was included in the price of the program which was disappointing. I know a few other people from a different program and they had all the excursions included. The small day trips with our CISabroad handler was pretty nice as well. Our guide was knowledgeable and very nice. I kept in contact with her throughout the semester if I needed anything and she was usually pretty prompt in answering. One thing I didn't like about the program was the number of people enrolled. There was literally 6 of us and it was odd. I expected more people in our program. It's not necessarily CIS's fault, but that's something to keep in mind. If anyone is expecting a large 30+ group of people, they might be disappointed.

What would you improve about this program?
I think just inlcuding all the excursions in the price of enrollment. The main trip was included but the smaller ones I also wanted to go on weren't. I understand they are lesser prices, but I paid a lot of money for the program and expect a little more in terms of sightseeing, no matter if I travel solo on the weekends anyway.

Response from CIS Abroad

Thanks for taking the time to provide your feedback, Nancy! It sounds like you were able to appreciate the smaller program size in terms of the prompt, personal support offered. We hope you were able to find ways to mingle with the hundreds of other students at AUR! We're sorry that you were hoping to pay for and arrange excursions in advance; we find that most participants enjoy getting a lay of the land and organizing and paying for excursions after they have arrived - our staff are always happy to help participants arrange independent travel!
