Opportunity of a lifetime

I was able to study abroad in Rome, Italy for three blocks through CIEE my junior year of college. I have wonderful memories of learning to order at a café near my school for a class project in beginning Italian, meeting wonderful friends, enjoying delicious cuisine, and traveling throughout Italy as well as to Denmark, Switzerland, and Greece. I had such a special and wonderful experience thanks to CIEE that I now represent the program at my university! From CIEE, you can expect academic excellence, student support from directors & staff, and travel opportunities. I highly recommend this program.

Pros
  • Amazing housing location
  • Lived nearby school
  • Travel throughout Italy included in the program

Study Abroad in Roma, la città eterna!

This previous spring semester, I had the chance to study abroad with CIEE in Rome, Italy. To say the least, it was life-changing. I went abroad knowing essentially no one, and got paired with roommates from an entirely different university - not to mention the language barrier. Despite all of this, CIEE made this experience the most amazing 4 months of my life. The on-site classes and activities provided an immersive educational experience, but I was also able to travel to prioritize things like traveling, exploring new cultures, and having fun!

Pros
  • The best food - not an exaggeration
  • Rich history
  • Not too expensive
Cons
  • Public transportation

Spending a Semester in Rome

I absolutely loved my time abroad in Rome through CIEE. I was placed in an apartment in the neighborhood of Prati with 6 random roommates who ended up becoming some of my closest friends. My apartment was in such a good location of only being a 30 minute (at most) walking distance to anything I needed while also being in a slower and quiet area. I never once felt unsafe walking around the city or to/from my apartment. The CIEE staff was a good mix of locals and other works who ensured that I felt confident in everything that I was unsure about. CIEE offered plenty of unique activities to do throughout the weeks and weekends that I would have never found out about by myself. The classes were taught by local professors who genuinely cared about their students and what we were learning and made sure that everyday in class was fun and exciting. Study abroad changed not only how I view the world, but how I view myself and I am so grateful for the opportunity.

Pros
  • Immersive Culture
  • Connections

Amazing!

CIEE really worked hard to listen to students' feedback. It was great seeing quick turnaround and real action in response to what the students wanted. CIEE planned many great day trips that were great options especially for students on a budget. In addition, the faculty at CIEE ensured they were providing students with what they wanted to experience whether it was going to Pompeii or having a wine tasting the local area.

I would also highly recommend studying in Rome because it truly is unlike any other city. Not only are you surrounded by rich culture and history, but there is also amazing food and gelato at every corner. The CIEE courses offered any site visits which was basically a personal guide with professors that were very well knowledged on the given topic. My favorite was an renaissance art history course. I was able to appreciate the Vatican museums much more deeply that I could ever have.

Pros
  • Living near city center
  • Readily available staff

Food, Fun, and Foreign Perspective

My experience with CIEE Jauary in Rome was wonderful. CIEE was supportive through the whole process, from being accepted and navigating preparations to giving reccomendations while there. The coursework was a little harder than I would've liked, but it brought us together as students and we managed fine. Rome was beautiful and I felt safe walking everywhere for class and social outings, etc. I also wish I had budgeted a little bit better beforehand, as it's easy to go nuts on personal spending, so I had to use my emergency credit card a little bit, but not too bad.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come with some euros already, not all places take card, but have more backup money than you'd expect on a card because ATM's work same as normal over there.

CIEE Open Campus

I enjoyed CIEE's Open Campus program because it gave you the freedom to design your own semester the way you want, which is something that not many programs offer. Having the opportunity to live in multiple cities and meet different people is amazing, and the staff at CIEE do their best to make sure you get the most out of your experience. With study tours, excursions, and events provided by the school, you get a well-rounded study abroad experience, and the chance to learn more than you expected to. I have been able to take part in cooking classes, walking tours, and more and learned more about my host city than I thought. Not to mention that traveling independently is a very easy process and CIEE is very flexible about it. I would absolutely recommend CIEE to anyone considering studying abroad.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come into the program with an open mind! There are going to be obstacles in your way and sometimes it can be difficult adjusting to a new culture, especially where there is a language barrier. Don't let it get you down, and instead focus on the incredible adventures you get to have.

Why everyone should go abroad with CIEE

The staff at CIEE is amazing and supportive. They will work with you before and during your trip to make sure you’re fully prepared and know what to expect. They plan fun excursions throughout the program so you have the opportunity to experience the culture and history. The classes are also very insightful and offer onsite excursions to gain more perspective on the subject matter. The staff is also very informative about events going on around the city, and sent out newsletters letting us know what was going on. The staff also offered recommendations for other cities and ensured that we were safe and enjoying ourselves wherever we were. Everyone involved in the program is very welcoming and they let you know they are available to help with any questions you may have. Everyone at CIEE is dedicated to you and making your time abroad truly special.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would advise everyone to put themselves out there, make friends, and take chances. I received an opportunity for a weekend in Milan and Switzerland by a girl I had know for maybe three days because we discussed trips we wanted to take and experiences we wanted to have. If I had stayed to myself, I wouldn’t have received that opportunity. I also planned a trip to Paris with another girl for the last weekend because we both really wanted to go and figured why not. Take full advantage of your time abroad and see everything you can from the monuments, to museums, to street performers. Who knows when a chance like this will come again?

The Best 6 Weeks of My Life

My 6-week block with CIEE Rome was incredible. If you are reading this because you are considering studying abroad here, then DO IT!

I had the most incredible time in Rome, and the city now has a special place in my heart. The sights/monuments were breathtaking, the food was beyond amazing and the overall atmosphere of Rome was just incredible. But those are things people should already expect when coming to Rome.

What really made my experience unforgettable was the wonderful and lovely staff at CIEE Rome. From the second I arrived at the airport, I felt so welcomed. It was evident from the first day that the staff members truly cared about us. It was clear that our safety and wellbeing were their top priority. They became more than just staff members, directors and professors to us. They took the time and effort to get to know us on a personal level and become our friends. I can honestly say now that the people at CIEE Rome are like family to me.

I am beyond glad that I chose to study abroad in Rome with CIEE, and my biggest regret may possibly be not staying longer. I’m grateful that if I ever return to Rome (which I definitely will!), I have people to see and hopefully a place to stay! As much as I miss the gelato and cannolis, I miss the people at CIEE Rome the most.

Again, if you have to chance to study abroad with CIEE Rome, then please please please do it!

What would you improve about this program?
Have all students live together in the same building, but with the way Rome is built and works, it is nearly impossible. The staff does the best that they can to accommodate for our housing needs.
