WorldStrides Summer 2026

My time studying abroad through WorldStrides gave me the opportunity to fully immerse myself in a new environment while still having a strong support system around me. I was able to explore Rome, experience Italian culture, build relationships with other students, and learn things that I never could have learned from a textbook. Some of my favorite memories came from the unexpected moments—figuring things out in a new country, exploring the city with friends, trying new foods, and simply experiencing everyday life in a different culture.
Studying abroad also helped me become more independent and confident. Being in an unfamiliar place challenged me to adapt, communicate, and solve problems on my own. Those experiences taught me skills that I know I will continue to use in college, my future career, and everyday life. I came home with a greater appreciation for other cultures and a broader understanding of the world.
If you are considering studying abroad, I would encourage you to take the opportunity. Even if you are nervous or unsure about leaving home, those feelings can be part of what makes the experience so meaningful. WorldStrides provides the support and opportunities to help you make the most of your time abroad and truly experience another culture. It is an experience that pushes you to grow, gives you memories you will never forget, and can change the way you see both the world and yourself.

Rome was a life-changing experience!

I went to Rome in the Spring of 2024 and it was an unreal experience. My professors were super helpful and I learned so much in my classrooms as they were smaller. I also travelled to 11 countries on the weekends. From skiing in the alps, to the desert in Morocco. It was amazing to see all the nature and architecture that the world has to offer. The Italian people were super friendly and the food was the best I ever had. Rome has a special place in my heart for life. I highly reccommend this experience to everyone!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I was lucky enough to see a UEFA Champions league knockout game in Roma's stadium against Bayern Munich. The atmosphere was unreal I cant compare it to any sporting event I've been to.

Eternal City

I absolutely loved my time abroad in Rome, Italy with ISA. I went in Spring 2024 and was pleased by the weather, cuisine, and attractions Rome had to offer. Rome is a city like no other with a vast range of activities to do and neighborhoods to explore. I never found myself bored and was able to travel to 12 countries throughout my semester abroad. I found traveling out of Rome to be affordable and relatively easy which I loved. I attended The American University of Rome, which was incredible and enhanced my film studies scholars. Both the professors and staff were very accommodating and offered resources whenever I needed support. ISA was extremely helpful in my immersion to living abroad and I formed close relationships with the staff that helped eliminate feelings of homesickness. I would highly recommend studying abroad in Rome with ISA!!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would advice future travelers to get as involved as possible in their program and school abroad. It is truly a time to embrace yourself and try new things. I became more extroverted, free-spirited and open to new adventures after my time in Rome.
Pros
  • Rome has incredible culture, history, and people. The city is just as romantic and enchanting as the language, and locals encourage you to learn Italian.
  • The ISA program's staff is responsive and proactive in any situation involving their students.
  • ISA's excursions are both fun and relaxing as they are completely pre-planned. It is a great time to bond with the other students in your program. I still talk to all my friends from abroad every day!
What other participants should know
  • Rome is a big city which can feel overwhelming to someone who is not a fan of crowds or noise.

Lived in Rome for 2 months

I went and studied at the American University of Rome over the summer and enjoyed everything about it. I was the only student from my university going and was very nervous but everyone in my program welcomed me with open arms and made me feel loved. The hardest part of the trip wasn't the Italian or the culture (they mostly speak English and their culture is really exciting) but I found that the one thing that made me homesick was a hotdog.I somehow got sick of eating pasta and pizza. I'll tell you though, once I got my hotdog when I landed in America, I just wanted to go right back to Italy.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I know I wasn't the only person in my program who had a bunch of trouble with getting an international phone plan for the time we were there and ultimately had to get a plan in Italy so that would be my biggest piece of advice: pay a little extra so you can follow the trains and map out where you're going and in case any emergencies happen, you have a backup plan. It will ultimately reduce your stress tremendously and you can enjoy your trip more.
Pros
  • Lots to do in rome
  • plenty of resources to travel around
  • planned out adventures for the entire program
What other participants should know
  • turns out our ac was broken for a month and we just didn't know how to read celsius

Romeoville to Rome

Going from a standard Illinois suburb like Romeoville to Rome was an incredible change. Seeing famous landmarks like the Colosseum and the Roman Forum every day made history feel real. The food was amazing, especially the pasta, which was fresh and delicious. I loved experiencing Italian culture, with its relaxed pace of life and long meals with friends. The locals were friendly and welcoming, making me feel at home even though I was far away.

Studying in Rome taught me a lot about adapting to new situations and opened my eyes to different ways of thinking. It also made me even more excited about working in international relations. I had a comfortable place to live and made great friends, which made my time in Rome unforgettable. I’m really grateful for this experience and hope to go back one day to enjoy the magic of the city again.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
During my time in Rome, I tried Ox Tail Stew. I was a bit unsure because I had never eaten Ox before, but I decided to give it a try. The stew had a rich tomato base, and the Ox was tender almost like Pot Roast. To my surprise, I really enjoyed it!
Pros
  • Surrounded by history.
  • Such good pasta!
  • Public Transportation
What other participants should know
  • Traffic in all forms is not unusual especially in prime tourism season.
  • No free water in restaurants.
  • Everything's old.

Life Changing Experience

I went to study abroad this summer alone and was scared of not being able to make friends. ISA did an amazing job in hosting a get to know each other-like dinner to meet new people. That night I was able to meet my four closest friends! ISA provided so many resources and support to all their students to help them with navigating the new city and other cities within Italy during our field trips. Additionally, when I was sick the Italy ISA staff took care of me. I am so glad I picked ISA for my first time studying abroad!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The non-capitalist mindset. People are there to work and then go to dinner after work to socialize. They do not revolve their life around working.
Pros
  • Great food
  • Affordable Prices
  • Transportation/Walking Distance
What other participants should know
  • No AC (honestly not a big deal)

Life in Roma with ISA

I am so grateful for the experience ISA gave me in Rome. Everything that could be organized and created into an approachable process was. Signing up for classes, getting my permit to stay, and finding a place to stay were never done alone; ISA did much of the work. I was assigned an apartment with roommates and this formed the basis of the community within Rome. Our apartment had a beautiful view and was a place where we could all relax. There were also two trips with ISA that were no additional expense. We went to Florence and the Amalfi Coast. Both trips had fun activities and hotels in great locations.

My Time in Italy as a Student!

During my Study abroad experience in Rome, Italy I had the opportunity to not only enjoy the scenery of the beautiful city that Rome is, but get to meet new people along the way, some are in the same boat as you, and others have more experience living abroad. Coming together and experiencing a new culture with new people from different backgrounds was a special time for me. The program made sure that we had the time to explore Italy and its beautiful places and famous landmarks safely and responsibly. Not only that but since the beginning of the program, they made sure that the process of applying, to at the end of the semester would go smoothly for students. I appreciate everything that this program has done for my own experience as a student because it helped me enjoy my time the way that I wanted to in Rome.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
One thing I would change for myself was that I would look more into flights to other countries which would cost me less before the program started. I love Italy, and one thing I love about it is that it is very close to other countries that I want to visit. But I didn't do my research beforehand on flight tickets or anything. So if I had to do it all over again, I would try to be more prepared in that information.
Pros
  • The food
  • Landmarks
  • The scenery
What other participants should know
  • Language barrier
  • The Hot weather in some cases
  • The amount of walking I did sometimes
