Shanghai experience

It’s my first month teaching in Shanghai and my experience was a lot more different to the applicants pre-Covid. There was a lot preparation I had to go through to get to China (e.g. quarantined for 3 weeks in Xiamen, travel restrictions, finding flights, visa application and legalisation etc.). Throughout my journey the Fewerthings were with me every step of the way, especially when arriving to China! Jaemi has been amazing at answering and reassuring me with all worries, even when they were a tad silly. I wouldn’t know where I would be without them, as they’re still in touch with us while we are here too. If you wanna know how my experience is going, follow the fewerthings or my insta: Cedrick_jison for more information! I’ll be willing to answer them!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Chicken feet when I asked for chicken skewers… tbh I should have been more specific

Wonderful support in Beijing

I had been working in Beijing for a year or so and then the pandemic struck! I had to head home to U.K. and felt devastated my journey had came to and end. I started researching for companies who could help get me back there once the border opened and I came across The Fewer Things, it was so refreshing to hear their thoughts on going back to China and I appreciated their honesty when telling me how difficult this would be, but how it was possible with some determination.

I had originally planned to go back in September 2020, but the process got delayed due to myself getting Covid and having to push it back. It was great to have the support through this and they never gave up and gave me many options on what I could do next, but ultimately my heart was set on China, and then after months of waiting I finally made it back earlier this year! I am so grateful for school, local teachers and the new friends I have made here so far. It really could not have been possible without TFT's knowledge and determination.

I plan to move to Shanghai in the New Year which TFT are also supporting me with!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Navigating this whole move through Covid felt very daunting at times and I often felt like it would never happen.. but a calm head and persistence paid off!

Wow

Travelling during the pandemic definitely made it really difficult but i can say now, it was all worth it. Jaemi is honestly a god send. He made a very difficult process straightforward by providing support and guidance. And he is also available to speak whenever, which is helpful because sometimes the questions come at the most random times. Im currently in Shanghai& Im super excited for the year ahead! I will be teaching middle school students & im really glad i decided to join this programme!

What was your funniest moment?
My first night out in Shanghai was absolutely wild because i literally walked into a Gay bar (obviously i had no idea) but I had an amazing time and met the most loveliest people!!!!! They had a runway show in the bar , as it was Halloween, so they were showcasing their outfits and it was just surreal. Everybody looked like they walked out of a magazine.

The Fewer Things - Teaching in Shanghai, China

With all the regulations in place to enter China during the pandemic, it all seemed pretty daunting at first. However, with the constant support and help from Jaemi at The Fewer Things, I was able to get through the process! I cannot stress enough how Jaemi has always been a message or a call away throughout the whole process, even after we arrived in China!
If you are hesitating to applying to The Fewer Things, then hesitate no longer! It was the best decision I could have made to start the next chapter of my life😊

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I was pretty nervous on my first day of teaching, but the teachers at the school are so lovely and welcoming, I felt at ease straight away. The children are so sweet and enthusiastic to learn - my first day couldn't have gone any better. 😊

TEFL in China 2021

I decided to come to China in September of 2020 with the intention to come out in August 2021, and I made it out in September 2021. It was a year of hard work and lots of planning, especially with COVID-19 making the journey to China incredibly difficult. However, I can confidently say that without TFT I would have never made it here. It is almost impossible to navigate by yourself, and TFT provides all the support you really need to get yourself out here. I have now been living in Shanghai for almost a month which seems crazy! The time has flown. There is so much to see and do, and my list of places to visit only increases every day. My kindergarten is great. Although I am the only foreign teacher working there, they have made me feel welcome and the kids make sure to give me cuddles every day. The weekends are the time to see new things and travel around, and I am planning on doing just that. I feel I am at just the beginning of an amazing year. Thanks Jaemi! Can't wait to start my adventure.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Stay open-minded. It's probably not going to go how you expect it to, especially after you think you've planned everything meticulously. Just embrace it all and it will work out!

The Fewer Things: Shanghai

It's a super difficult time to move to China and the process is quite overwhelming, if you don't have the right help. The Fewer Things was amazing! I'm so glad I found them and was able to go through them. Jaemi was super helpful and kind every step of the way. He was very patient and kind with all of my questions. The Fewer Things are well-connected, professional, and so helpful! I highly recommend The Fewer Things to all looking to live and teach in China! Especially now. In such a hard time to move abroad, The Fewer Things is the best program to go with.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
There's actually nothing I would change. I would go back over and do it again. 10/10 experience.

The Fewer Things - China

It's super hard to get into China during the pandemic but Jaemi at The Fewer Things helped make it possible and has provided support the whole way through. Although things have not always panned out as expected due to changing regulations in China, it has been 100% worth it and so glad I went with The Fewer Things to make it possible. Jaemi still checks in even now we're settled and in the full swing of China life. And if you're worried about having no teaching experience, neither do I! It's very easy going and you soon find your feet with teaching English

My first month In Shanghai!

I applied to to the fewer things back in May, and within a couple days I had heard back and got an interview, and from there I have gotten everything I needed for this experience. Pub quizes during lockdown really helped with getting to know those you'd been travelling with, and from it I made some of my better friends that really supported me.
Even during these very uncertain times, TFT was always helpful on updating me with the recent news on Visas and travel restrictions, and doing all in their power to ensure I got here ASAP.
Once arriving in China, I completed a 2 week quarentine where both my School and TFT stayed in touch looking after my welfare and any problems I had. My school have been great at helping me with accommodation, travel arrangements and silly questions I had, especially with the language barrier.

I couldn't have asked for anything from TFT, they have really been great and I would urge everyone wanting to travel abroad to teach to choose the TFT. Not only are they professional, it's great to have been talked to in a laid back friendly response which eased any worries and no question was ever to stupid.

This is the best decision I have made to come out here, I've met the nicest people and China is absolutely stunning! Definitely something to look back on in 10 years and smile that its happened.

Take the leap, you won't regret it!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Just the bite bullet, leave your comfort zone and jump into the unknown.
