Teaching English in Bali

I spent one month volunteering in Bali, and it was one of my most rewarding travel experiences. Although it has been some time since my experience (2017), I have been reflecting on that experience recently. This was my first time going abroad solo and teaching, and I was nervous. The support staff was so helpful, and if you are worried about going abroad, I recommend going through a program like IVHQ. They work with a local organization, Green Lion, and everyone is helpful and supportive. The first week we had orientation, where we learned about key phrases and culture; we even had a cooking class! Additionally, the area where volunteers stay is a big community where you meet other volunteers but still interact with locals.

Pros
  • Supportive staff
  • Culture and language orientation
Cons
  • The handoff of the curriculum could be better. Since short-term opportunities are provided, consistency in the curriculum can be difficult. Students relearn a lot of material.
