About Program

On the teaching program, you will have the chance to assist teachers in schools or teach your own classes if you feel comfortable. You will mainly teach English or Mathematics but if you are competent in another subject then you would be very welcome to teach your subject. School classes start at 9:00am and finish by 3:00pm. The children will be grade 1 – 4 (year 7 – 11). Volunteers will be placed, depending on your wishes, in schools or orphanages which have schools attached to them. Orphanages will often have a minimum of 70 children and some will not have a school attached to them, however, if you would like to be a part of educating these children then you can also run classes for them. Teaching styles and schools will likely be very different to what you have grown up with. Therefore, to ensure the best experience for you as a volunteer and for the children you will be teaching, we ask that you participate on this program for a minimum of 2 weeks.

Program Highlights

  • Assist teachers in schools.
  • Teach your own classes in schools.
  • Educate children in orphanages that don’t otherwise get an education.

The Wandering Aardvarks

The Wandering Aardvarks is a fantastic choice for both group and solo travelers who want to explore the beauty of Kenya while making a real difference through teaching and community experiences. From the very start, I felt completely safe and supported — the team goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is comfortable, well-informed, and confident throughout their journey.

I had the joy of going on an overnight camping trip to Lake Naivasha with a small group, and it was an unforgettable adventure. Boff, Shirlene, and the entire team were incredibly attentive, fun, and made every moment special. They strike the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation, creating a warm and welcoming environment for everyone.

Alongside the many adventures, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a local school, teaching English, Maths and so much more! The programme was well-organized, meaningful, and focused on achieving real, concrete goals within the community. It was such a rewarding experience — I enjoyed every moment of it! The children taught me just as much as I taught them, and seeing the tangible impact of our efforts was deeply fulfilling.

Overall, The Wandering Aardvarks offers amazing value, unforgettable experiences, and a supportive team that truly cares about people and purpose. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a safe, fun, and impactful way to explore Kenya while giving back.

Best volunteer program I've been on

The Wandering Aardvarks sure know how to get their volunteers involved with the community and I did not expect that everyone in the community would give me the kind of love I got. The kids at the school were very lovely mostly during the break between classes when they all joined me to play with my hair as well as ask me about Australia, which they asked for photos ofcourse. Volunteering for 5 weeks felt like a 5 stay program as the whole community was involved in having me and the other volunteers active during the program or even when we had a lazy day they'd come and keep us company or take us for sightseeing around the area. I'm really looking forward to next year and going back to volunteering with them again.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Having to see a hyena on our drive at night back to the volunteer house from a day out with Kelvin was the deal breaker.
Pros
  • Good WiFi in the volunteer house
  • Programs are at walking distance
  • Being involved in decision making
Cons
  • Time management by " Nunu" one of the guys
