IVHQ volunteer Argentina

I volunteered in Argentina and loved almost every moment of it. As a non speaking Spanish person the first day at the program was a bit much as no one spoke English but as the days went on we were able to connect with clients and employees despite the language barrier. I was impressed with IVHQ they were diligent from the start and were great to connect us to the local program coordinators who were always there to help. Our placement was wonderful, I didn’t enjoy that supper was served at 9:00 pm but that is the custom there so I got used to it.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I tried goat. I wasn’t really a fan but I don’t care for meat in general but I was in Argentina and our guide said try the little goat….so I tried the little goat.

Community Outreach in Cordoba

I had a great experience volunteering in La Calera with Asociacion Corazon Contento. It was a pleasure to help the community and cook food for them. I was welcomed by Pedro & Nati in their warm home. They all welcomed me as their family and I'm grateful for that! I had the chance to practice a lot my spanish, discover the mountains in La Cumbrecita, spend a weekend in the beautiful Buenos Aires, meet people from different countries and more. It was an experience who made me grow personnaly. I really recommend this program!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My biggest advice for future volunteers is to take a day at a time and adapt to the culture. In this way you will gain trust from the community and be able to do more and more everyday in your project!
Pros
  • Pedro and Nati's Home & family
  • Estella & Romina good energies (owner of the asociacion)
  • Food
Cons
  • Distance between home and project
  • Mayebe more hours per day in the project

Healthcare Volunteering in Argentina

My time in Argentina was so different from regular life but so amazing in every single way. It was a wonderful way to learn and live in a different culture and improve my Spanish. From forming close bonds with the local family and all the other volunteers to gaining healthcare experience and connecting with the doctors and nurses at the clinic, I can truly say that I had zero regrets from this experience, and if I could it all over, I would do it all in the same way. I would recommend this to anyone able to. It is something you will thoroughly enjoy from beginning to end.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come with an open-mind and took every opportunity to learn and enjoy the experience through speaking with locals, enjoying the food, and partaking in the culture and activities in the area
Pros
  • Homestay Accommodation/Local Family
  • Clinical Volunteer Experience
  • Other Volunteers

Magia Argentina

My experience in Córdoba, Argentina, has been simply unforgettable. I discovered so much about the country I visited, its people, and their way of life. But more importantly, I also learned a lot about myself. I was welcomed in an incredible way and received so much that giving back felt completely natural.
Finally, the organization of the trip by both IVHQ and the local team has been impeccable in every single detail.
I would definitely consider to repeat this kind of experience in the future.

Argentina will impact your heart!

For I had never been to Argentina and I not only wanted to visit/make an impact in South America - but I had heard from so many that the warmest and most caring people reside in Cordoba. After volunteering in Cordoba, I most certainly agree! This volunteer trip made such an impact on me, my heart... and complimented my on-going goals to continue volunteering around the world.

I chose the Community building assignment in Cordoba, Argentina as I wanted to be very hands-on with a community in need. I was placed in a little community center/soup kitchen in an impoverished neighborhood. The older woman who ran this soup kitchen was deeply moving to work with and be around... her immense love for her neighborhood could be felt in every aspect... from the hand-prepared food to her love and hospitality. I helped prep meals in large quantities from peeling potatoes and cutting loaves of bread. I then, helped pass out meals to each adult or child in need. They were regulars every evening, so it was very easy to feel the love and appreciation.

I also fixed pipes, helped clean, build small items and odd/ends that she needed help with. It was extremely rewarding. She, like her community was so deserving. I played soccer and ran with the local children. I learned Spanish every morning and grew very comfortable in both the community and with the family I was staying with.

The volunteer house was also very welcoming and the host family was so kind/helpful. Myself and all the volunteers definitely felt like "part of the family" right away! We had large family-style dinners which were amazing... filled with laughter, stories, great food and conversation! I'll never forget it.

We went on side excursions and I spent an unforgettable weekend in Buenos Aires solo!

This was my 2nd volunteer trip with IVHQ and I have a 3rd trip planned next summer. I'd like to thank IVHQ, the host family and the kind woman I was placed with. It was such an incredible experience and I will profoundly miss Argentina!

What was your funniest moment?
I'm certainly not fluent in Spanish... so I definitely had a few laughable moments trying my best to communicate in Cordoba! Really funny moments! I laughed every time...
Pros
  • Kind and caring community. Cordoba is known for having the nicest people in South America!
  • Fluent (or efforts to speak) in Spanish is helpful so it's excellent for improving your language skills!
  • Amazing volunteer assignments in small neighborhoods in need.
Cons
  • Knowing Spanish is a huge plus! The majority of Cordoba does not speech English.
  • Lots of meat and dairy as there's an influence of Italy there. Pretty difficult for vegans.
  • Cordoba is still a small city and the volunteer house is in a quiet, safe area. Nightlife isn't like in Buenos Aires.

Family travel to Argentina

My two teenagers (14 and 16) and I traveled to Argentina and volunteered for a week of our vacation. Our contribution was to paint walls at a local community center/school. More importantly we bonded with the young ambassadors of Argentina (the students at the school) by playing ‘futball’ every afternoon.
Our home stay provided everything we could ask… they made our trip smooth. The housing was lovely (our own room/bathroom for the three of us). So many logistics were conquered with the host family’s assistance (including help with a bus reservation when our flight was canceled at a later part of our vacation). The food was worth returning for in itself!
Highly recommend this site for future volunteers!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Embrace Cordoba and get out to explore. Uber is cheap and so many things to discover. We felt very safe the entire trip.
Pros
  • Good introduction to a new country for us
  • Bonding with locals and feeling helpful
  • Learning some Spanish
Cons
  • The other participants at the home stay (other volunteers) were mostly young college kids. They were on a different path (which is fine) but meant that my teens felt left out. Would have been great to have other families volunteering too.

I Highly Recommend IVHQ

The organization is very well organized and provides volunteer opportunities all over the world. We did a homestay in Cordoba, Argentina. We loved getting to know the coordinators and local team. They were extremely welcoming, patient, and willing to listen. The employees at the volunteer location were very friendly. They made us feel at home and shared how grateful they were that we were there. I highly recommend this program and in particular volunteering in Cordoba, Argentina. It's scary trying something new, but worthwhile!

What was your funniest moment?
Our funniest moment was when my fifteen year old sat on my lap at a soccer game.
Pros
  • Very organized and laid out
  • Great communication
  • Homestay and getting to know the culture
Cons
  • There weren't any other volunteers there my age, but this was out of the organizations hands.

Meaningful and Lovely Experience!

Residing in a homestay with a family provided a profound cultural immersion, offering a unique and needed perspective. IVHQ did an outstanding job making the trip safe, enjoyable, and meaningful. The warmth and hospitality of the host family enriched my experience in ways that I could not have anticipated. The cultural exchange and personal connections formed were invaluable, and I would gladly repeat this adventure a hundred times over! It was also wonderful to work directly with patients and healthcare workers in the clinic setting.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Mate and Empanadas!
Pros
  • Memories with diverse groups of people
  • Ability to make an impact in clinical setting
  • Experiencing a culture different from your own
Cons
  • Homesickness - as expected

Questions & Answers

Hi Alvaro, While visa, flights, travel insurance are not included in the program fees, we understand that one of the biggest costs when preparing for a volunteer trip abroad are the flights. To help overcome this, International Volunteer HQ has partnered with STA Travel to create flight itineraries especially for IVHQ volunteers. You can find more details on our website.
