Working with Kids in Guatemala

Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed! By volunteering with kids in Guatemala, you help keep at-risk youth off the street and in the classroom. From homework help to extracurricular activities, your time is what matters most. Volunteer placements include projects at daycare facilities, community centers, orphanages, schools and enrichment programs in and around Antigua. Make an impact that will last longer than your trip.

Teach English in Guatemala

Learning English opens doors, but the majority of Guatemalans can’t afford classes. In public schools across the country, ESL programs lack adequate funding and native instructors. Private language institutes are not an option for the average family, but volunteers like you can help close the gap. Volunteer placements include projects at underserved schools, after-school programs and community centers in and around Antigua. Become a part of building brighter futures.

Volunteer in Medicine & Healthcare in Guatemala

Many Guatemalan medical facilities lack sufficient funding, resources and staff. Local healthcare professionals need volunteers like you to meet the community’s needs. Volunteer placements include projects at hospitals, clinics and assisted living facilities in and around Antigua, as well as mobile medical campaigns and vaccination programs. Help care for vulnerable and rural communities that aren’t receiving adequate medical attention.

Construction projects in Guatemala

The Guatemalan economy cannot continue to develop as long as poor infrastructure stands in its way. The impact of construction and renovation projects is undeniable. You’ll make a difference you can actually see. Volunteers help build community centers, medical clinics, schools, assisted living facilities, housing and churches in and around Antigua. No building experience is required, only a willingness to work. Spark change: give Guatemalan communities the means to grow.

amazing holiday program

My two friends and I had decided that during the Christmas holidays we wanted to help other people. . We searched the web for the best international volunteer program and we found great reviews for Maximo Livel,so we decided to trust them. We had never seen Guatemala and Antigua seemed like a great destination. The experience was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! We cannot be more happy with the choice we made. The Maximo Livel staff from Jean to Beth to Jeorge helped us with everything we needed and we felt like home, away from home. We did the Christmas program, which meant we were able to work on different projects, from assisting the elderly, to playing with kids in local orphanages, the painting local homes. We had arrived in Guatemala with the idea of helping people in need and we are leaving as changed people. I personally will never forget this experience and I highly recommend it. The only small negative was that my homestay was not as comfortable as we were hoping. We stuck it out for the week, but if you aren't comfortable with where you are staying, just tell the staff and they will move you immediately. Buena onda!

The month my life changed!

Not only did I have the time of my life, but in just 3 short weeks my life changed for the good! Maximo showed me what an adventure really is. My trip was so EPIC that I didn't even stay in contact with my family or friends back home ... I was engulfed in a world that was unlike anything of my own or anything else I've experienced. Culture, adventure, experience and memories is what I took from this trip and nobody will get anything less than that I GUARANTEE it !! I spent 10 days living on a wildlife conservation and took care of animals that wouldn't even be allowed as pets in my own country. I climbed the ancient ruins of Tikall. I zip-lined along side two different species of monkeys. I climbed a volcano and roasted marshmallows over lava rocks. I learned how to surf and fire spin in El Salvador, which now is a new hobby of mine. I even tried to Salsa with my house mother!
Nothing was short of excitement and adventure which is what the fantastic Maximo team offers and will make sure is given to each and every volunteer. I'm just biding my time until I come back and see my GUA family again. Truely missed, and because of this entire experience I NEED to be back out in the mighty jungle!
MAXXIIMMOOOOOOOOOOOOOO for the EPIC win!

What would you improve about this program?
If I could change one thing, it would be to have stayed longer. I definitely thought 3 weeks would have been long enough since I've never left home by myself before but the fun took the time right out from under me!
Next time I have to stay longer because then I would consider my whole experience to be nothing less than perfect.

Great experience and a trustworthy program

2 months ago I was like most of you reading this as I scanned Google for companies that organized volunteer experiences. I landed on Maximo Nivel because on paper it appeared to be the most value for your buck. Although I did fear problems because this company was unknown to anyone I asked. I was truly relying on reviews found online. So if this sounds like you, let me reassure you in saying everything will be okay if you pick this company. They had my back all the time as I was in Guatemala and made it so that even though I was in a foreign place, I could come into the office and feel safe with people I could trust.

What would you improve about this program?
Parents get worried, even if you are 18 or older. It would be better if Maximo provided a number for the house you are going to be staying at before your program begins.

Guatemala

My experience in Guatemala was completely amazing! I was able to volunteer in two different orphanages. The children here were so loving and not only that, but I was able to learn so much from them. They have truly made a difference in my life. I was so grateful that my spanish speaking skills came in handy since I was able to communicate with them, with no problem. Not only was the experience of working in the orphanages great, the different activities that Maximo Nivel arranged for us were a blast! Maximo Nivel always made sure we felt safe and comfortable while in Antigua and truly made us feel at home! I had an incredible experience thanks to the different projects and activities Maximo arranged for us.

What would you improve about this program?
Over all the program was great! I would of liked to spend more time within the project, meaning that instead of just volunteering for half of the day we would have the option of doing full days. This way we could do a little more.

Most Meaningful Travel Of My Life

My fourteen year old daughter inspired our journey to Guatemala and it was one of the best experiences of my life. When asked what she wants to do when she graduates from high school, her response has always been that she wants to help people. It seemed a volunteer vacation would be a great way to explore that.

From the time we arrived in Guatemala, we received excellent support from the staff at Maximo Nivel. A volunteer orientation was held the first day where we learned about the city of Antigua, safety, travel opportunities, Spanish class options, etc. A staff person from Maximo then led us on a tour to help us orient ourselves and pointed out banks, shopping, restaurants and other useful information.

Later that day we met with another Maximo staff person and he took us via chicken bus to our placement at an after school program in San Antonio. He showed us where to get on and off, how much to pay and how to find the school we'd be working at. We were introduced to the director of the program and then stayed a bit observing and basically hanging out to get a feel for things.

Our two weeks working at the school were incredibly satisfying and fun! Maximo's advice about being flexible is important to remember. This was not a US after school program, it was much looser. Be prepared to have some ideas on how to help with Math and English, especially if you don't speak much Spanish. It was challenging in the best of ways and every effort we made was truly appreciated.

We were in a home stay with the most amazing family! Everyone I've spoken with has been very happy with their accomodations and meals.

I could go on and on about how wonderful our experience was, but the main thing is if you're reading this and considering doing it, I strongly encourage you to go for it!! It was the experience of a lifetime and we look forward to working with Maximo Nivel in their other locations!

Advice for future travelers...

Stay a bit longer if you can to do some sight seeing. We learned of many tours and trips once we arrived and we were amazed by how many cool things there are to do here!

For those that don't speak Spanish, I highly recommend taking a week or more of Spanish classes. It's cheap and the instructors are top notch. Even learning some basics helped us tremendously.

Bring those small packs of tissue for public bathrooms!

Be open and have fun!!!

My experience in Guatemala

Guatemala changed my view on life. I had the most inspirational trip and am so glad that I had the privilege to come and be apart of the amazing experience. I learned so much about the culture, people, and beautiful areas surrounding Antigua and I was only here for a week. This trip has helped me figure out what I want to do when I graduate college and has helped me develop a certainty for how much help I am capable of lending out a helping hand. This is by far the best trip I have ever been on and working with the children in the orphanages was a great experience. I wouldn't of had as much fun and knowledge about this trip if it wasn't for all the help I received from Maximo Nivel and for that I thank you.

Thank you!!!

Thank you to Maximo Nivel for a wonderful time in Guatemala. These past 2 weeks were great! I enjoyed getting to expierence another culture, meeting tons of people from all over the world, sightseeing, and most importantly volunteering at Casa Aleluya with some amazing children! You guys do a great job of making sure we have all the appropriate documentation prior to leaving for Guatemala. The support throughout the two weeks to ensure that I was getting the most out of my trip while remaining safe in a new location was great! I wish I knew about this program when I was younger! The orientation process was alittle slow when I first arrived, I felt like I wish I knew a little bit more about how things would begin [ such as volunteering is only a half day so you have time to do afternoon trips for sightseeing] but once everything got started it seemed to flow really well! Thanks again!!!

What would you improve about this program?
More information on the volunteering. If I knew that I was only volunteering for half days I probably would have volunteered for a longer period of time and not done the mini adventure.

Guatemala Volunteer Experience

I wish I knew about this program when I was younger because it's a really great way to meet new people, get started in traveling while doing great things for a community, and immerse yourself into a culture. Maximo Nivel did a great job preparing me before the for the trip in getting all the necessary documentation to start volunteering. Orientation could have been a little bit more specific during the initial stages, however after we got the ball everything fell into place. During the trip, I felt there was great positive support from all of Maximo Nivel staff members. I also did the mini trip that was an option, and I'm really glad I did it, but it may not have been the most cost effective route. However that being said, it was the best route for me with my limited time here at Guatemala and I got to see a little of everything.
