Help care for vulnerable and rural communities that aren’t receiving adequate medical attention.

Construction projects in Guatemala

The Guatemalan economy cannot continue to develop as long as poor infrastructure stands in its way. The impact of construction and renovation projects is undeniable. You’ll make a difference you can actually see. Volunteers help build community centers, medical clinics, schools, assisted living facilities, housing and churches in and around Antigua. No building experience is required, only a willingness to work. Spark change: give Guatemalan communities the means to grow.

People I will never forget

My home stay family, the Lau family, was welcoming and encouraging.I adore my Guatemama as well as the other members of the household.
Fredy was the construction leader and I worked on remodeling and improving a school(run by an amazing couple)
Maximo helped me plan trips, taught me how to live there and had amazing patience whenever I wanted to change my Spanish lesson time or level. The teachers are great by the way.

Lo maximo

I worked in the construction program for two week and left extremely satisfied with virtually every aspect of my experience. Since the first moment that I decided to volunteer I have had nothing but great, prompt, thorough responses and help from both the Maximo team and the IVHQ team.

The work was great and very gratifying. The supervisor was extremely competent and I had a lot of confidence in him.

I was also secure in knowing that any issue I may encounter or even possibly encounter would be addressed properly and that i would not have to face any issue on my own. The Maximo team was more than willing to take the time to help and explain anything I needed.

I also really appreciated the myriad of social and cultural activities that Maximo offered.

I have worked in the past with similar organizations and have had experiences where the support team was not exactly supportive. I was, on numerous occasions, basically left by myself to figure a lot of things out, some very pragmatic and essential things. So those not-so-positive experiences have really made me appreciate Maximo even more.

I look forward to possibly working with Maximo Nivel again in the future, "primero Dios"!

What would you improve about this program?
It was a little bit difficult to not have much living / storage/personal space for the volunteers in the house we were at. However, the house family was extremely doting and kind and sweet.

Medical Placement in San Antonio

I loved working in the clinic in San Antonio, it was quite the adventure. I rode on a chicken bus every morning to the clinic and took heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, and respiratory rate of the patients. The highlights were being able to do a wound cleaning, give injections, and be in the surgery room in a hospital to see a birth. The doctor was very kind and I learned so much from him. He inspired me even more to enter the medical field and I am very grateful to have had this experience. If you are interested in medicine and have a real passion, I say go for it. Coming to Guatemala to volunteer will be one of the best decisions you will ever make!

What would you improve about this program?
I wish I could have worked more than 4 hours. I think 6 hours would have been the perfect amount of time.

Liked it a lot

I have volunteered in various countries before and was very pleasantly impressed with Guatemala program. It is very well organized. The pick up went marvelously, the family is very nice, meals are good, other volunteers living in the house are friendly, project is interesting. What I liked the most were clear expectations and rules. Everything is written out. I knew what to expect. With such throughout preparations I was able to enjoy my volunteer experience more than in other countries.

Orientation was very clear and did not leave me wondering about anything. The project coordinator was great. The project itself was very interesting and I am going to miss the kids a lot.

I highly recommend to travel with this organization as you won't be disappointed.

What would you improve about this program?

Amazing experience! recommended

I had a great experience with an after-school childcare program in guatemala, it was amazing. The only thing I regret is taking the flight home, I wanted to stay longer for just one week! It was not enough, you start to build great relationships with the children and i miss those kids like crazy!

What would you improve about this program?
I didn't find out what particular project (age of children, how many, daily responsibilities) until the day before we had to begin. It would be helpful to know before, especially for donations' sake (for size information, etc.).

Maximo Nivel in Antigua

My trip to Antigua was made possible through the brilliant minds over at Maximo. They connected me with a wonderful clinic and provided some of the best Spanish lessons I've ever had (after taking over 6 years in school). My experience in Guatemala was absolutely life changing and I felt completely supported by the Maximo team the entire time.

I loved my volunteer work. I found it to be extremely rewarding and a great supplement to my academic career. However, I will say that my experience was completely contingent on the fact that I already speak proficient Spanish. I would have felt isolated, useless and bored without the ability to communicate with the people I was working with.

Overall, Maximo Nivel is a wonderful, organized, and reliable program that allows you to travel and make the most of your experience abroad.
