New friends and an amazing experience

Unfortunately, our stay was short, only one week. However, in this short period we were able to make many friends and experience some of the highs and the lows of the Palestinian life. The GoPalestine Center developed an amazing schedule for our week, two Refugee Camps and a visit to the Old City. We were provided with the best breakfast each morning and all the information we needed. I am sad to be leaving here tomorrow, like I am leaving behind good friends. I hope this review can influence someone to take the leap and come, it's very worth it!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Don't talk yourself out of this.
Pros
  • Great people
  • Felt safe
  • Enriching
Cons
  • Language barrier with locals
  • Border crossing
  • Nothing else

An eye-opening, educational, cultural experience

I feel very fortunate to have heard about GoPalestine (via a friend of a friend) as the centre has given me an invaluable opportunity to visit Palestine. I was only able to take 2 weeks off work, but the centre has many flexible volunteering oppotunities to suit all lengths of stays. The team at the centre have been so welcoming and helpful, they all work very hard to give visitors the opportunity to learn about Palestine and to give the local people opportunities to improve their English speaking (as well as other learning experiences). It has been very enriching to speak with local people about their day-to-day lives, their experiences, their struggles and their aspirations and I look forward to sharing their stories back home in Australia. The people of Hebron have shown us such warm hospitality, it has been such a privilege to visit and experience the friendliness and generosity of the Palestinian people. If you are considering visiting Palestine, I highly recommend volunteering with GoPalestine.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
For me, traveling to Palestine via Jordan was nerve wracking as the border crossings can be chaotic and confusing. It was an exhausting day of travelling and took us 3.5 hours just to cross the border, but it allowed us to see a very small slice of the kind of restrictions of freedom that Palestinian people experience daily.
Pros
  • Seeing the beautiful side of Palestinan culture that is not shown in the media
  • Visiting refugee camps, speaking with people ther and gifting toys and learing materials to the children
  • Learning Arabic
Cons
  • Some confusion at first about transport options and costs

Like no other place in the world

I came here because I felt a strong calling to connect with Palestinian culture and people and I found myself integrating here very quickly. People here really value generosity and have invited me to celebrations, weddings, meals and into their houses for tea on a daily basis. I feel completely safe here and would recommend anybody who is interested in the true culture of the Holy Land to take a trip here and experience the hospitality and warmth of the people. I highly recommend it and everyone should come here.

Make Palestine Your Next Destination :)

Hello! I’m Mia from Australia. With the current situation in Gaza, my visit to the West Bank to help refugees felt very important. I’ve always been interested in Palestine, and this trip let me connect with the wonderful people of Hebron.

I volunteered with Go Palestine, teaching English to kids in Al Aroop Camp age 11 to 12. Their excitement about having a new teacher, even for a few days, warmed my heart. I also took some Arabic lessons from a fantastic teacher named Asma, who made learning fun. A highlight of my trip was visiting the old city of Hebron and the Hirbawi factory, the last place making traditional Palestinian Keffiyeh. Seeing this craft up close was unforgettable.

I was welcomed by a local family, which helped me experience daily life in Hebron. I loved every moment and often wished I could stay longer. The hospitality of the Palestinian people is amazing, especially given the challenges they face every day.

Even with the tensions in the area, I felt safe and welcomed. When you show genuine interest in the culture, the locals are kind and friendly. The history, traditions, and delicious food I enjoyed left a big impression on me.

Hebron can be tense, but I found peace and connection there. If you’re curious about the region and want a meaningful experience, I highly recommend volunteering in Hebron. It deepens your understanding of the culture and creates lasting memories. I can’t wait to return and continue this journey!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
It was when I had to try a new dish with a local family in Hebron. I was worried I wouldn’t like it or wouldn’t know how to eat it properly. To get through it, I reminded myself to be open minded and just enjoy the experience. When I tasted the food, it was delicious, and I ended up having a great time sharing a meal with them!

I highly recommend visiting Palestine

During my time in Hebron, the Palestinian Center helped me learn a lot about the conflict and the local conditions. Teaching English both in Hebron and at a nearby refugee camp gave me a great chance to meet people, understand their views, and learn about their customs while making new friends. I also connected with local activists and discovered various projects aimed at improving life for the Palestinian people.

I’ve found Palestinian culture to be very open and kind, with delicious food. It was easy to make friends, and I even got invited into people’s homes. Although there are often demonstrations, Hebron is generally safe for foreigners even in these hard times.

I highly recommend visiting Hebron and volunteering at the Palestinian Center if you're interested in Arabic language and culture, politics, or international relations. You'll gain valuable experience and a better understanding of the Palestinian situation.

Experience Authentic Palestine

My time in Hebron and at the Palestinian center has been amazing and unforgettable. I interacted with Palestinians every day, learned about their daily lives, and made new friends.

During my volunteer work, I taught English at the Al-Fawwar refugee camp and organized an academic writing workshop for Hebron University students, thanks to Dr. Naim.

One thing that really stood out to me about Palestinian culture is the strong sense of community and spirit. The people in Hebron are very friendly and welcoming, always going out of their way to make you feel at home. The children in the Al-Arroub and Al-Fawwar camps are eager to learn English and bring a lot of positive energy to every class.

Despite what you might hear in Western media, Palestine is a safe country, and Hebron is a very friendly city, even with the current situation. I highly recommend this program to anyone who wants to see the real Palestine, not just the one most people imagine.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The checkpoints in the West Bank were among the most distressing things I’ve ever seen. These checkpoints control the daily lives of Palestinians.

Volunteering in Alfawar Camp in Hebron

My experience with Go Palestine's volunteer program with refugees in Hebron was truly transformative. The staff was incredibly welcoming and always available to help. From the moment I arrived, I felt like a part of the community.

The program was well-organized, offering a variety of activities that allowed me to engage deeply with the refugees in Alfawar camp. Teaching English and helping with daily activities provided a meaningful way to contribute and also learn from the resilient and inspiring people I met. The cultural immersion was profound; living in Hebron gave me a firsthand understanding of the challenges and the incredible spirit of the Palestinian people.

It was heartwarming to see how the community in Hebron opened their homes and hearts to us volunteers. The program coordinators ensured we had everything we needed, from safety to cultural insights.

I would highly recommend this program to anyone looking to make a positive impact while experiencing the Palestinians culture. It’s an eye opening experience that has left a lasting impression on me. Shukran Go Palestine, for this unforgettable journey :)
