A Completely New Experience

I volunteered with AngloVille for three weeks this summer on junior programmes in Poland and I had the most amazing time.

The entire experience, from city tours to meeting so many new people (mentors, co-ordinators and participants alike) was so jam packed and full of fun that for an extravert like me who loves to have a laugh and a chat this was such a wonderful time. It involved a week full of speaking sessions, cultural sessions, games and social time, as well as meal times and free time where we were encouraged to speak with participants as much as possible. The time spent with people makes it hard to say goodbye on the final day, but the fun you have during the week and the memories made are worth it.

Out of the experience you get free food and accommodation at the venues, as well as access to some of the facilities. You also get a city tour with lunch provided before the beginning of each programme, which is a grate way to meet the people you will be spending a week with. In return you offer your English skills - all sessions are friendly and not 'lessons' but conversations which relieves pressure. With the junior programme the co-ordinators try and add in as much fun as possible, and break the day up with games and activities, but you find that often the participants simply enjoy conversations with you.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
You get what you give. Put in the effort and you will be rewarded. My suggestion would be to get stuck in with conversations and activities: make a fool of yourself in a game, ask funny questions in speaking sessions, learn about the local culture and teach them about yours, help put yourself and others at ease throughout the programme and you will see how much it benefits you and others!

Angloville review

I did three separate programs on Angloville between December and July. Each one was fairly different in terms of venue, group sizes and atmosphere but each was a rewarding experience. Angloville is a program I would recommend for someone looking to volunteer abroad, especially those who love meeting people from other countries and cultures. With that said, it is a challenge - participants are expected to mentor English learners, some with lower levels than others, and by the end of the week help them improve their confidence in speaking English. The days can be long and sometimes the learning materials provided can stump you. This, combined with the fact you are staying at a small hotel in a remote area of a foreign country, can be a bit jarring in the beginning. However, there is a jovial atmosphere on the programs, and every evening a chance to unwind with the other English speakers as well as the natives. By the end of the week, you should feel that it was worth it, and hopefully have made a few friends. I hope to be back in the near future.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be prepared to take things seriously, because a week of structured conversation modules can be fairly intense, but the participants are paying for and expecting to meet English speakers who can genuinely help them improve.

Discover Europe while helping students learn English

I volunteered with Angloville for 3 weeks, and they were some of the best weeks of my life! I met so many interesting people, both students and other volunteers. I made lifelong friends and so I am so happy I did this program!

The venues were really nice, which made the experience much better. Most of the venues are far from the cities, but this allows you to connect with nature and focus on what matters-the interactions.

Overall, I had an amazing time and I recommend this program to anyone who is open minded, loves to travel, experience new cultures, and help others.
You don't have to be super extroverted and loud to do this program, as I am quite quiet, but everyone is so welcoming and lovely, so I definitely opened up while I was here, and I loved it!

I can't wait until next summer, to come back and make more memories!

What would you improve about this program?
Most of the program was very well organized, but unfortunately I got unlucky and for my first week was situated at the venue Amber Bay. This was the first time Angloville was hosted here, and you could tell. The hotel staff didn't provide towels or bathroom rolls, even though they were requested several times, and the tap water is undrinkable, and made myself and several others sick. However, the kitchen staff was really nice and accommodating, to myself (vegan meal plan) and everyone else.

Angloville

Having recently completed one week on the Angloville kids programme in Poland, I can say that the coordinators, mentors and kids were all absolutely fantastic. The kids in particular were very funny, and both the coordinators and mentors were very supportive - overall I had a great time. While the kids' timetable was highly structured, the coordinators were incredibly creative in their ideas for games and activities.
The vegetarian food was better than I'd expected (plus there were cake & ice cream) and the hotel was gorgeous; the only quibble being the mosquitoes as we were quite near a lake & forest. The picturesque venue clearly made it more exciting for the kids however, and we very much enjoyed the celebratory forest bonfire/barbecue.

What would you improve about this program?
More info. before program & a less isolated venue.

Angloville Malta

Had a great time on the junior international programme in Malta with Angloville. All the kids and staff were lovely, the days were long/ tiring but definitely worth it. Almost everyday we had a day trip so were able to visit many cities and sites around Malta & Gozo, but still whilst helping the kids.
We had a couple of designated 'mentees' designated for the programme, it was great to help them more intensely on their presentations and watch them develop over the programme. This meant we could work more closely with some but were still able to help all the others too!
The accomodation was great for the volunteers, very social for after we'd finished for the day. We had shared rooms however a private kitchen/diner and a pool which we could use at any time.
The angloville method of immersion is a great one! It is about learning english with fun and not in classrooms. This is so much more enjoyable for the kids and for us as volunteers.
This was also a great way to make new friends from around the world! The volunteers were from multiple different countries and so were the participants. This brought together an exciting range of people with so many stories and so much to talk about.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Bring snacks as it's a long day!
The more you put in the more you get out!

Summer well-spent! (Junior programmes)

Loved my time with Angloville in Poland - it could be intense at first but you get used to the timetable! Met a lot of amazing mentors and great kids, both of which you can learn a lot from! It's great to see everyone change over the week, and often kids don't want to leave. Communication with Angloville could be slow at times but co-ordinators are helpful and you get a lot of support from themselves and other mentors. The hotels vary and are often in very remote locations, but this gives a community feeling and free time can be spent exploring the area. The food again depended on the hotel but they were accommodating to vegan and vegetarians, and staff were often helpful. Overall I would recommend angloville for anyone who wants a very social, fun and flexible teaching experience in a different cultural setting

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Going into the first speaking session was a bit nerve-racking, but it's important to remember some kids are nervous too. Many of them were actually really enthusiastic and speaking sessions could be really rewarding

A wholesome experience you won't find anywhere else!

I completed the Junior Programme in the Czech Republic for one week during the Summer and had an incredible experience! The days are long but the free/social time means that it's spent in the company of likeminded people, so it barely feels like work at all! We also went on a few trips with the participants as well as sunrise hikes- just native speakers, that were a lot of fun and helped to break the ice, especially with the kids as it gives them something different to talk about than the set tasks!

Be prepared to try lots of local foods, but have a laugh with both the kids and volunteers alike. This programme is great for helping people to get out of their comfort zone, especially if you're a naturally introverted person.

It's a rewarding experience both for the participants and as a volunteer and I can't wait to sign up again!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would stay for longer! I had the option to stay for an extra week but I had already booked accommodation and onward travel that I would lose if I cancelled. If you have the option to stay on longer, do!

Best time of my life!

I had an amazing time! I did both a Junior programme and an Adult programme. Great co-ordinators and it was so lovely to speak with Polish people and learn about their lives, their culture, their food, their history. The best way to travel! I stayed in good hotels where the food ranged from ok to fantastic. It was nice to meet other native speakers from around the world and learn from them as well. Loved the structure of the programme and as they predict: speaking sessions were definitely my favourite part of the day. The programme also allows you a good amount of free time which is great for naps, or other personal things you made need to do such as planning your next angloville week! Definitely recommend the Adult programme as you meet some amazing people who may even inspire you!

What would you improve about this program?
The only thing I thought needed improving was that the materials they provide for you to use need to be thoroughly proof-read before printing. We found many (embarrassing) mistakes.

The two companies I have used for this so far are Angloville and VaughanTown. The enquirer needs to visit their websites and discover what the conditions are. There is availability throughout the year and quite often spaces available on trips at short notice that may not yet have been filled. Angloville has a Facebook page also. volunteers.grupovaughan.com/what-we-do/vaughan-town angloville.com
