Interning at DKMedInfo (SmartENR)

Last summer, I had a four-week internship with DKMedInfo (also known as SmartENR) with Alex, the CEO. Half of my week was working from home (WFH) style which allowed me to explore various cafes to work at like the aquarium cafe in Seoul, and the other half of the week was an adventurous journey both to-and-from the office, which was based in Suwon, and to many University campuses where we promoted the nursing AI company to prospective and current students. I had such a wonderful time, and I am visiting Alex again this August in Seoul, thanking him for the opportunity which has enabled me with experience working globally. This internship gave me the experience in working abroad, and has definitely inspired and assisted in obtaining my graduate job as a teacher in China this September. Working with Alex was an honour and a privilege that I only had because it was provided to me by CRCC Asia. Notably, everyone in the CRCC Asia community was well-informed on introducing us to Korean work culture (especially Tess, who accompanied me to the office building on my first day which was super helpful). Not only did Alex introduce me to new skills, he also introduced me to many local food spots he ate at as an undergraduate. He also drove me to amazing places like the Seoul National memorial site where he showed me the British soldiers that fought in the Korean War. When Alex needed somebody to print 400 copies of his AI company catalogue for a conference in Manchester that month, I took initiative; using my immense amount of luck (my dad used to work in a printing factory for 34 years, his only job and work qualification in a town with little opportunity) I managed to make this happen with this local printing factory, generating revenue for my local working-class town while also organising and managing the printing of these copies for the convenience of my boss (it is always good to have one less thing to worry about when travelling for a conference). I felt like I had been able to give back both throughout and after my internship. After my internship ended, I accompanied him at the conference in Manchester and showed him around my relatively local English city. Overall, I can’t recommend this internship enough. I have to highlight one factor though for CRCC to consider; this opportunity would not have happened without the grant provided to me by the Turing Scheme and the others (like professional clothing grants) from Durham University.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Kongguksu! I loved it.
Pros
  • Networking opportunities
  • International business opportunities
  • Support integrating into Korean corporate culture
Cons
  • I wished my internship was longer to make a greater impact as a thank you to the company, and to practice Korean longer.

Internship and Exploring Seoul Winter 2025

Although I was only one of two interns total for the winter term with CRCC, I couldn't be more grateful and happy with my experience. I learned so much, traveled a ton, and made some amazing long-lasting professional and personal connections/friends. Seoul is a full and bright city, but it is also possible to travel all around Korea even if you only have a short amount of time. I absolutely regret nothing and loved every second of my time, only wish I could've stayed longer since 8 weeks goes by insanely fast~

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
San-nakji is probably the most unfamiliar/hard to find! It's a raw octopus dish (can be a little unnerving to some because it's known to be moving still when served) but was delicious with some side dishes, sesame oil, and beef~

Best 2 Months of My Life

During the 2 months of my marketing internship in Seoul, I developed new skills like web design, improved my Korean skills with my co-workers, and most of all, made friends that I will cherish for a long time. My living accommodation was surprisingly quite spacious and I loved the location(Yonsei Hall). The CRCC Asia staff were so helpful and kind especially when I had to go to the emergency room. They were with me every step of the way. Everyday was so much fun and I’m so glad I decided to go through with this program.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Become friends with the other program interns! (Especially the ones that live in your dorm building). It will make your entire experience in Korea all the more fun. The best part of ending my work day was meeting up with my new friends and going out for dinner. Going to events like Water Bomb festival or even small pop-up shops are so much more fun as a group.
Pros
  • Nice Spacey Dorm (Yonsei Hall)
  • Very Helpful Staff
  • Location (Proximity to popular areas)
Cons
  • Mandatory CRCC Asia Events
  • Unpaid Internship
  • Culmination of Transportation Cost

One to remember

My time in Seoul as part of the CRCC Asia Program is one to remember. Going to Seoul, I was nervous and sad about leaving home. From the moment I landed, I was greeted with a positive attitude and a very enthusiastic program manager. The people I met during my time in Seoul (on the same program and the Korean buddies) are life long friends, and the experiences we shared together will be memories we will cherish forever! To sum it up, the program has taught me life long skills, and connected me with a network from another country. A tip from me is to be proactive and find a company you want to work with! I ended up suggesting to the manager a few architecture firms to contact and I ended up with a very highly regarded firm in South Korea.

To sum it up, you will no regret going on this program!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
The duration of the program. I had so much fun I wanted to be there longer!

Great City, Fun Times and Endless Possibilities

Spending the summer interning in Seoul was an unforgettable experience! The CRCC Asia staff were very helpful and supportive before, during, and after the program ended providing us with helpful tips, a variety of cultural tours and experiences, along with opportunities to network with locals. I had gotten a great internship as well which allowed me to explore Seoul and many other cities in South Korea, which was excellent. My coworkers were nice and helpful, and I felt a lot of growth during my time working.

Arriving in Seoul was a breeze as the staff were helpful, provided a great presentation and could answer many questions. On the second day we had received our sim cards which were extremely helpful. One of the apps I recommend downloading to get around Seoul and other cities in South Korea is Naver Maps. One of the best parts of Seoul is the transportation system where you could get around the city for a low price on buses and the subway system. The food is Seoul is also excellent and cheap, there are so many places to shop in local markets, malls, and cultural areas. Don’t limit yourself to Seoul too much as there are other cities to go to and many cultural festivals and events throughout Korea. Purchasing bullet train tickets and bus tickets to travel to other cities are simple as well. I highly recommend this the Seoul Internship Program because it has made a lasting impact on me and there is always something great to do!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make the most of your free time exploring Seoul and other cities. The transportation system might be daunting at first, but it becomes simple to navigate with apps like Naver Maps. I also recommend maximizing your free time by going to different places after work, instead of returning home right away.

Great Relationships

The CRCC Asia Seoul summer program will be unforgettable and the best experience I had! I meet great people who have similar interests as me from around the world and built strong relationships with my host company. The CRCC Asia staff were really on point in resolving any concerns and always willing to help you in anything you need, before and during your program! I highly recommend this program due to the experiences you will earn and the amounts of learning you will achieve. Also Seoul is such a beautiful city, rich in culture and fashion, cosmetics and in general lifestyle. In addition, CRCC Asia staff will have cultural events were you can learn and experience certain aspects of Korean culture and lifestyle, experiences you will regret to miss!!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Next time I will make sure to bring a lot of sunscreen due to Seoul's hot summer.

Vibrant City, Beautiful Landscape

My summer in Seoul was fantastic! I felt very supported by the CRCC staff throughout the process, from interviewing with companies in Seoul to discussing my preferences and leaving for Seoul with a preparatory talk. On arrival, the staff was helpful, courteous, attentive, and made sure that we were all taken care of and settling into the city nicely. I enjoyed the professional development workshops, the cultural tours and experiences, and other fun programs that were offered. My internship placement was perfect for me. The company aligned with my interests and the job was enjoyable too. My coworkers were amazing to work with and we still keep in touch regularly. I highly recommend the Seoul Internships Program. You will never be bored in Seoul!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Go with an open mind and you will enjoy everything! Don't be afraid of trying new things.
