My Academics and Internship Experience Abroad

My experience abroad was comprised of a wonderful Finance, Accounting, and Data Analytics internship at a sustainability startup called Clic Recycle. We worked with human hair to create products that decontaminate water, reduce water usage in growing crops, soundproof buildings, and more. I was able to rework some of the past systems to improve efficiency, and I was invited to attend the Mobile World Congress to find potential investors. Outside of my internship, I also had four very interesting classes that I was taking, which also included field trips and assignments that encouraged interaction with the local community. I was able to learn so much, not only about Barcelona, its culture, and its history, but I was also able to learn more about myself, my strengths, and my interests that would guide me to a fruitful future. The staff were so helpful in this, as they genuinely care about their students and want them to get all that they are hoping for and more out of the program. I cannot recommend this program enough, and have been an avid recommender for it since returning to my campus.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I would say one of the most surprising things I did was jump in and dance under the sparklers during a Correfoc, which is a fire run. After following along with the crowd, I finally worked up the courage to jump in, and it was super fun. I was worried about getting burned, but I didn't, and now I have a new, fun, and rather unique experience!
Pros
  • Amazing transportation system
  • City, beach, mountains, and rural areas- how can you beat that?
Cons
  • Very touristy depending on when you go

CEA CAPA Barcelona Review

My experience in Barcelona was nothing short of life changing. It opened my eyes to new people, culture, food, language, and so much more. The staff at the school and the people I worked with at my internship were incredible people. They always checked in with me to see how I was doing, genuinely cared about myself and where I came from, and offered helpful advice to navigate the city and all that it had to offer. The apartment location was amazing, I never felt unsafe in Barcelona, and the school location was excellent.

Would Recommend for Any Pre-Med/Pre-PA Student

Shadowing and interning in Barcelona was so much fun in addition to being extremely informative. Being able to pursue your professional and personal goals in another country gave me the opportunity to grow and compare systems in Spain and the US. I would tell any prospective students not to worry about the language barrier. While I think it was helpful for me to know some preliminary Spanish, it was certainly not required. Also, when you get there, the team on site is super helpful in navigating you around the city and from the airport.

Memories for Life

I am so grateful for my time abroad. My internship boss was flexible with my school schedule and my travels so that I could work whenever possible. It was about a 30 minute bus ride over to the internship site - 3 days in person 2 remote. I was expected to work 20 hours a week which was fine, but expect to have much less free time than your peers. I think I benefited more from the cultural immersion that the internship provided rather than the actual work I was doing. Something challenging for me was that I came to Barcelona solo and it seemed like a lot of people came with groups of friends. It took me a second to find my people, but once I did, it was amazing to travel with them almost every weekend and experience the great city of Barcelona.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The first time I walked into a cafe and ordered in Spanish it was so nerve racking. I had a whole script memorized and the lady asked me a question that I did not anticipate and I froze. After this interaction, every interaction after became easier and by the end I was very comfortable going to stores/restaurants and speaking Spanish.
Pros
  • Great Travel Oppurtunities
  • Good professional experience
  • Personal growth
Cons
  • Lonely at first
  • Internship is a big commitment

Barcelona, Spain

I could not recommend study abroad enough, it was 100% the best decision I have made! Ive always wanted to travel, and there is no better time considering you can get class credits simultaneously. CEA CAPA was always there for any question or concern I had, with a quick reply and a solution at hand. Classes were engaging and completely manageable with the fast paced schedules most study abroad students have. I would go abroad with CEA all over again if I could! I also could not ask for a better study abroad city. Barcelona has anything you could ask for, including a major city, to beaches, to quiet towns. The food was delicious, the people were kind, and the opportunities on a daily bases were endless.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
As much as I loved exploring and traveling to different places, one thing I would change is spending a bit more time in my home base. I feel that Barcelona had so much to offer, especially on the weekends and I could have taken more advantage of it!
Pros
  • Weather. Never got too cold, rarely rained, and nearly always sunny
  • Architecture. You cant walk anywhere without seeing beutifully structured buildings, whether designed by Guadi himself or one of their regular apartment buildings.
  • Transportation. Out of all cities I visited Barcelonas metro was by far the easiest to use, it was quick to navigate, always clean and I always felt safe.
Cons
  • You do have to be aware of pickpocketing, I wouldn't say it is as much of a problem as many make it out to be, but it does happen so you just have to be smart.

Thank you CEA CAPA!

I truly had the most amazing study abroad experience. Walking into a program knowing nobody, CEA CAPA provided me with a space to meet new people and gave me opportunities to learn about Spanish culture. I was able to acquire a volunteer position where I taught local adults how to speak English. This opportunity gave me the chance to meet locals and immerse myself in their culture while also giving back to the community.

CEA CAPA also provided a weekly newsletter with a very clear outline of the events that they were offering for the week ahead. For busy students in a new city, this newsletter was extremely helpful. AICAP activities were another provided resource for students, allowing me to go to a cooking class and attend an FC Barcelona football match.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My most nerve-racking moment was the day that I started my volunteer position. I was under the impression that I would be assisting an English teacher with their curriculum. When I was led to my classroom and dropped off, I was told that I was the English teacher in charge of the class. I was shocked and, of course, very nervous. Quickly, I decided what my lesson plan would be for the day, and I was able to teach an amazing class. Using my skills from my introductory Spanish class, I was able to organize my course in a way that helped me immensely during my language learning. Teaching this class was such an amazing and rewarding experience. I was able to meet local adults and learn about the way that they live their lives. I was also able to enhance my Spanish speaking skills as I often needed to use it to convey new ideas to my students. This volunteer experience was truly one of my favorite parts of studying abroad because I got to give back to the community that welcomed me with open arms and learn more about my new home.
Pros
  • Volunteer opportunities
  • Social events
  • Clear communication

Highly Recommend!

I studied abroad in Barcelona through CEA CAPA for their one month program. I can hands down say it was one of the best experiences of my life. The school was located in the Plaza de Catalunya meaning that I had access to endless shopping and dining options. There was so many things to do that it was impossible to ever be bored! CEA CAPA also offered excursions for students to embrace the culture and further explore the area. For example, during my program the school offered a tapas making class for students interested in experiencing Spanish culture! Barcelona has something for everyone, and if given the chance, I would study abroad with CEA CAPA all over again!

Best Experience Ever!!

I completed a customized internship with Barcelona SAE this summer, and it was truly the best experience I could've asked for. The application process was smooth and easy, and the staff was so friendly and supportive from start to finish. They made the transition to living and working in Barcelona so seamless.

For my internship placement, it allowed me to have real, hands-on experience in a professional environment, which was both challenging and rewarding. I learned so much and felt like I was truly part of the team. For example, week one of my internship, I was already contributing to the team and presenting ideas which allowed me to use my skills and practice it in real time at my internship.

My housing was amazing I always felt safe, comfortable, and not to mention in a great location. This aspect of my study abroad experience is so special because I was able to meet lifelong friends through the program, which made the whole experience even more perfect.

Also one of the best parts through Barcelona SAE specifically, was how many activities were included. BSAE provided cultural events, day trips, and fun outings made it easy to explore the city and connect with others, especially locals!

Overall if your ever thinking about studying abroad in Barcelona, I 100% recommend Barcelona SAE as I had such an amazing experience and you will too if you go through them!
