Marketing Taiwan

This spring, I had the opportunity to complete a marketing internship in Taiwan. I can honestly say that it was a genius idea to intern abroad. Not only did I get new marketing skills and uni credit but also had loads of fun. It was my first time working in a multicultural team and while it is quite different from back home, it is also very inspiring. It was also my first time traveling alone. Taiwan is a very safe country, so I did not feel unsafe at all, not even while walking home from the bar late at night.
There is also always something cool going like international meet-ups or traditional festivals. This is very different from my small town back in the Netherlands, so it was extremely exciting for me to attend all kinds of festivities. The events hosted by Meiji are also really fun and help you meet new people. I can strongly suggest doing an internship with Meiji Internships. Taiwan is a beautiful destination for that.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
As a person who enjoys the occasional quiet me-time, there are a lot of places for short getaways outside bustling Taipei where you can escape into nature. Especially Yehliu Geopark is a spectacular place to spend a day!

Review: My time in Taiwan

After graduating from High School in the states, I wanted to travel to Asia to gain some new experiences before settling on my future career. Working in a hostel in Taiwan, assisting travellers with planning their trips, doing check-in and check-outs, learning about different cultures and slowly getting the hang of it all was extraordinary. I got to meet a crazy amount of inspiring people, which really helped me find my path.

Interning abroad was one of the most valuable experiences of my life. I gained a lot of confidence in my skills and myself and now feel confident enough to enrol at uni - as a Tourism Management Major! I would highly recommend this program to any who wants to try something new to get lost and to find their way! It will be an adventure, but with great support! 5 stars!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take notes! Be it a diary or bullet points in your calendar. It will help you reflect after returning home and think about the tasks you liked to do and would like to continue doing after graduating from your internship.

Fantastic

Since my very first day in Taiwan, I was grateful that the Meiji Staff always had my back. My suitcase got lost on my flight from Moscow to Taipei. The staff member who was sent to pick me up form the airport helped me report my luggage as lost. That is something I definitely wouldn’t have managed to do on my own - especially not in Taiwanese. Afterwards, he took me on a sightseeing trip around town which was awesome as well! Meiji really gives it all to make your stay as hassle-free as possible.
I also had some trouble with the aircon in my accommodation, so I texted the staff and they send someone over to fix it amazingly quickly!
Planning my internship in Taiwan, I had a tough time deciding whether I wanted to go for the placement or Standard package. In the end, I decided to play it safe and go for Standard. It was the best choice. Having accommodation, transportation and internet ready and running when you get to your destination is such a big advantage. I just wouldn’t have had the nerves to deal with it myself. Therefore, I was very grateful that Meiji allowed me to start into my internship adventure as smoothly as I did!

Minha lha Formosa

My experience with Meiji was amazing! The team did a wonderful job getting to know me and my expectations and came up with a plan for my dream internship. My placement was quite spot on! I learnt everything I had set my mind to: Local culture, basic language skills and a solid set of hard skills in Journalism. My colleagues truly became family and it will be incredibly hard to leave them behind.
From experience, I can tell you that it is crucial to do as much research as possible on your host company before going with them. Make sure you know who you’re working for! Another insider tip: Go for start-ups! While big companies might looking hot on your CV, everything you’re gonna do there will be copying & printing (so I have heard) and won’t benefit you skill-wise. Go for smaller companies as you will have maaaany opportunities to take on new projects, try different tasks and implement your own ideas.
Last but not least: Taiwan is a beautiful country with is much history, culture and wonderful people. There is so much to see, do, explore, discover. Taiwan might seem overwhelming at first glance, but really, it isn’t. There is unspoilt nature and everything anyone could wish for. Embrace it!

My Taiwan Internship

¡Hola! My PR and marketing internship was with an international company in Taipei. Here, I learned a lot about work in big companies and how to adapt to a new work environment in a foreign country. Believe me, it is a challenge to live in a culture that is foreign to your own. Costa Rica is also a small country like Taiwan but still, you can hardly compare the two. The food, climate, nature, people, language, past-times, daily life, work mentality, working hours, parties, supermarkets…. all very different. Through my internship, I learned to love both!!! It was a fantastic opportunity and awesome for my future career as I plan to start my own PR company after graduating. For that, I have made new skills, important business connections and talked a lot to people who have already succeeded in the industry I want to get into. I was glad to have chosen the business package because like this I met many inspirational people at networking events who taught me a lot.

Career Goals, Travel Adventures & Stinky Tofu

When I first dived into the adventure of looking for an internship, I was hoping to find something where I can improve my Mandarin and Business skills. I massively struggled with finding an internship in a mandarin-speaking country by myself, although my skills are quite strong. That’s why I chose to go with Meiji Internships. They allowed me to test the waters in Taiwan and smoothly sail through my internship voyage!

Growth: What a philosophical question. Well, I would say that I have definitely learnt a lot during my internship and while traveling Taiwan. So 10/10, I guess?
Support: Solid 10/10! Definitely! Meiji Internships was great from start to finish and beyond. Right from the first contact through Skype, I felt like I had placed my internship quest in the right hands. I could ask them anything and could count on them to look after me as I stepped out of the plane in Taipei.
Fun: I rated this one 9/10. Meiji did a good job here, I just didn’t partake in many activities they offered, so I am not really fit to rate them. Most of the time, I just met up with people I had met at work or in my gym.
Housing: I stayed in an apartment 20 mins away from my company. It was clean, rather small and had all the necessary amenities. 9/10.
Safety: I was always as careful as one should be traveling alone as a girl (skip shady bars, don’t talk to weird strangers…) So I never encountered any situations where I would have felt unsafe.
Overall: One of my favourite experiences ever. 10/10.

Ten out of ten

My experience in Taipei was unique and exciting. I must admit that I was a bit nervous at first because it was the first time I had gone off to a real job far away from home. But right from the start, Meiji was highly attentive and accommodated me wonderfully. When I got to Taipei, I learnt that everybody else was feeling just the way I did (which was awesome because I quickly made new friends!). I loved both, the times spent working and the times spent travelling - it was honestly a great mix. That way, my motivation to travel never reached a saturation point and I kept loving each and every new sight (in contrast to this one time my sister and I went backpacking in Thailand and just felt like we had seen enough temples at some point). You really don’t need to rush through all the touristy spots! Interning abroad gives you all the time you need to take it all in. I am returning home grateful, and with a huge smile on my face, because this program exceeded my expectations!

What would you improve about this program?
Maybe offer some more sport activities or a gym membership card

Taiwan? Taiwan!

I feel like not many people know about Taiwan. But it is such an amazing place! I had been to Taiwan before to visit friends who I knew from my study abroad in the US, so when it came to choosing a destination for my internship, my mind was set: It had to be Taiwan!

An internship in Film & Photography where you actually learn something is a fairly difficult opportunity to secure in Germany. But thanks to MeijiInternships, I had the chance to work in my dream industry (and my dream destination!) I spent some days shadowing my company’s photographers and videographers at different locations and events, which was an incredible learning experience. In addition, I was also given a camera and helped with many Photoshop tasks. It really was the perfect internship for me and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to advance in my Photography career, meet friends from all around the world, and grow into a more independent and confident person. I learned so much about work in Taiwan and now feel a lot more confident about my photography skills than I did before my internship started. I am actually even considering to start a freelance photography business back in Germany (with occasional visits to Taiwan, obviously!) Throughout my time in Taipei, I felt incredibly comfortable and it quickly became my favorite place in the world!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The language was a challenge at the beginning, especially when it came to public transport. But I used apps to teach myself the basics and pretty much always found a way around the language barrier!
