My kids are inspired to learn Mandarin

Silk Mandarin's summer camps have become a beloved tradition for my family. This is our third year sending my kids to China from Canada, who were 9 and 12 when they first attended. Initially, they knew hardly any Mandarin, but after just two weeks, their interest in the language blossomed.

I believe their love for Mandarin stems from two key factors. First, the camps are packed with fun and engaging activities that make learning a new language feel like an adventure. Second, the teachers are incredibly patient and supportive, which helped my kids build the confidence they needed to succeed.

Now, my children can comfortably hold daily conversations in Mandarin. My son even challenged himself to be the MC at the closing ceremony this year!! I wholeheartedly recommend Silk Mandarin's summer camps to any parents looking for an inspiring and effective way for their children to learn a new language.

July 2025 Teen Summer Camp with Silk Mandarin (Shanghai and Qingdao) – Amazing

After studying at Silk Mandarin myself for over a year, I decided to spend this summer in China and bring my 13-year-old son along. While I continued with my adult classes, I enrolled him in Silk Mandarin’s Teen Summer Camp—first at their Shanghai day program and then at the overnight camp in Qingdao. It turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve made.

My son was eager to travel and explore but wasn’t exactly thrilled at the idea of spending part of his summer learning a new language—especially Mandarin, which was completely new to him. But Silk Mandarin changed all of that. Their brilliant mix of language immersion, cultural activities, and adventurous outings sparked something in him.

He loved it. So much so that as I’m writing this review, he’s already asking if we can extend our stay—or sign him up for another camp in the future. After his Qingdao presentation, on the train ride back to Shanghai, he opened his Mandarin notebook and started practicing phrases on his own. He even asked me how to write characters. That moment said everything.

Silk Mandarin didn’t just teach him a language—they created an experience that was inspiring, empowering, and truly unforgettable. They’ve built something very special here, and I’m deeply grateful. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. This summer was more than we ever expected.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Don't be afraid of starting a new language and trying something new. You will make a lot of new friends from all over the world.
Pros
  • Lots of support
  • Really fun program and activities
  • Great Teachers that are truly engaged
Cons
  • Wanted to stay longer

Best camp EVER!

From the moment we began our conversation with Mia, a sense of familiarity and trust was instantly established. The support we received was tremendous. It went above and beyond anything we expected. The sensitivity, understanding, and reassurance offered to a mama bear like me is no small task. Yet the Silk Mandarin Team managed it so beautifully.

The environment is simply breathtaking. The teachers, the staff, the sense of security, and everyone who contributed to making this experience everything it promised and more, we sincerely thank you. My daughter made new friends from day one, and the integration was seamless. You made her feel seen, welcomed, and safe.

She is already more confident engaging with people in Mandarin, which is such a joy to witness.

Thank you, Silk Mandarin Team, from the bottom of our hearts.

We wholeheartedly recommend this incredible, fun, and enriching learning experience in Chinese language and culture.

Tips:
To ensure smooth access to Western apps while in China, it's advisable to install a VPN such as Leaf VPN. Additionally, consider getting a portable WiFi device or installing a local data plan.
Apps like Alipay and WeChat are essential for everyday transactions and communication, so make sure to set them up in advance.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve racking experience was realizing we would miss our train from Beijing to Qingdao because our flight from South Korea to China was delayed. My internet access was unstable, which made it difficult to search for alternatives.

Despite the stress, I was able to manage the journey thanks to Mia who reassured me that she would find a solution, and she did. It was a true team effort, and in the end we arrived safely and well in Qingdao.
Thank you once again!
Pros
  • Great Program
  • Amazing Team
  • Friendly participants
Cons
  • The age limit currently ends at 17, which excludes older teens who could still benefit from the program. Extending it to 18 would be more inclusive and developmentally appropriate.

This is an interesting and fast learning experience

The camp is run and taught by very educated, kind, and interesting people whom you want to listen to. In addition to the camp, it includes entertainment in the evenings. various ponzdki and museums. I will definitely return next year.

It's a great place to improve your Chinese skills, learn about the culture, and discover new things. I want to praise the excellent work of the teachers. They are well-organized and hardworking. They understand and accept students. I will keep coming back. Thanks to the team for the good work

Silk Mandarin Camp (Child)

The camp was incredibly detailed, offering us many opportunities to not only improve our language skills but also our understanding of chinese culture.

I would say that the excursions in particular (to around Shanghai and Suzhou) were very fun, allowing us to experience using Chinese Mandarin in real life.

Throughout the camp we were given good food options which allowed us to be nourished, and they were all delicious!

Id say that it’s definitely worth the money and worth going to (for both the learning experience and activities)!

Love Silk Mandarin

Our kids absolutely loved their time at Silk Mandarin! We initially signed up for just one week due to visiting friends, but once we realized they were leaving midweek, I reached out to see if we could add three more days—and the team kindly accommodated us. Our kids begged to go back just to be with the amazing teachers and new friends they made.

Every teacher was incredibly supportive, patient, and kind—creating such a welcoming environment for all the children. The fun, well-organized field trips and the constant photo updates made the experience even more memorable for our whole family.

Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced, Silk Mandarin does a great job assessing each child and placing them in the right class. I highly recommend this camp to anyone looking to learn Mandarin in China—it’s not just educational, it’s an unforgettable adventure!
