Kyoto, Japan

This was honestly one of the highlights of my summer. The environment was so welcoming, and I made friends with people from all over. If you're thinking about joining next year, definitely do it! My only advice for future participants is to get involved in the group activities early on, it's the best way to get the full experience. The teachers were incredibly supportive and always willing to help. Future participants should definitely come ready to ask questions and collaborate! Overall I really enjoyed my experience.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?

Cultural Immersion

I had the pleasure of taking Catalonia and Spain Through the Arts. The class was centered more around tours and sight seeing rather than lecture, which made the trip feel much more real and immersive. However, on the days with lecture, it was never too bad and our instructor, Marcel, made it very easy to follow. The exams and projects were fair and followed the course well, and work was not a hinderance on me being able to experience the city whatsoever. It was a great time and I would recommend it to anyone.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My room mate and I did paragliding through the French Alps. I am not a fan of heights, but I figured it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. When I got in the air it wasn't scary at all, and it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. After doing it, I would without a doubt do it again.
Pros
  • Great instructor
  • Amazing touring locations/ experiences
  • Food is amazing
Cons
  • Expensive trip
  • Rooms are somewhat small in the residencia
  • Can be overwhelming being here alone

Mechanical Engineering student studying in Hanyang U + CIEE Internship

I am a 4th-semester ME student from Penn State University who came to Seoul with CIEE to do the Engineering, Technology + Science program. I took two CIEE courses (Internship seminar + Culture & Cuisine), two engineering courses at my host university (Thermodynamics + Dynamics), and an Internship. My CIEE courses were small in size, with not too many assignments, and even though the classes lasted 2 to 3 hours, the professors made them engaging and fun to attend. My HYU courses were academically challenging but definitely doable; they barely provided assignments, and most of my grade was weighted on my midterm and final, which provided some stress, but it was expected coming into Korea, where academics are known to be challenging. Don't let that discourage you, as there are resources like office hours, and you can make friends with whom you can study as well. The host institution was also attentive to how the international students were, and would send emails to students with important information and events happening at the university. My internship was the highlight of my experience abroad, as I got to work in a Korean "start-up" company for 4 months, where I worked on my soft skills and was able to get a glimpse of what corporate life is like, as well as gained experience that I can add to my resume. CIEE made sure my time here was enjoyable, such as keeping in contact and responding quickly to our emails. They would host events for us to meet Korean students, known as SEOULmates, and they would also host trips to nearby cities like Andong and Suwon so we could explore SK more.

Lastly, Seoul is a vibrant and lively city. There is so much stuff you can do; take advantage of that!!! I was able to go hiking, kayaking in the Han river, visit Namsan tower, attend a KPop concert, eat SO MUCH delicious food, shop a lot, and just have a blast. It is an opportunity to be independent and an adult, so make the most out of it!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I came to Korea without knowing any Korean. It is very easy to get around Seoul with only speaking English, but it would have been better if I had put in more effort to try to learn the language so that I could be able to read and order food or introduce myself to new people. If I were to do this again, I would learn some basic vocabulary of the main stuff I usually need to speak about such as food, directions, and introductions.
Pros
  • Built an amazing resume ~ you are in a NEW country so it shoes you are a global student and can adapt to new scenarios.
  • Met amazing people ~ not necessarily those in the program or host university, but being friendly to everyone creates great friendships I would not have expected to make (always be safe and aware of the situations though).
  • a
Cons
  • Not speaking Korean limited my ability to befriend korean students and it made it hard trying to read signs or talk to people that didn't speak english.
  • Time difference can sometimes get to you ~ homesickness is no joke, and the time difference sometimes made that feeling worse

Summer 2026 Session I

Amazing experience! Supportive staff and good academics, good lodging, and Amsterdam is a wonderful, safe city to travel in alone. The classes offered are great and provide insight on Dutch culture that enhances the experience of studying abroad. There are many activities through class and through the program that allow you to explore museums, other parts of the city, and complete activities you may not have previously considered. The staff members at CIEE are super approachable and always happy to help out when you need it.

CIEE Madrid - Amazing Experience

CIEE Madrid created an unforgettable study abroad experience. I would highly recommend this program to anyone looking to study abroad in Spain. The program offered substantial help with finding a place to live, organizing events, and creating a great environment to immerse students in Madrid culture. The classes weren't overwhelming, but still provided the intellectual stimulation that I look for personally. The professors, staff, and organization as a whole created an unforgettable experience.

Why did you choose this program?

I have always wanted to go abroad, and CIEE was one of the programs at my school that fit perfectly during a change in my life, as well as being a more affordable option. Having the opportunity to spend the semester at a University in Scotland and taking Scottish history classes presented me with the perfect way to spend five months. It gave me the push I needed to go outside my comfort zone and do something truly amazing

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

CIEE was very hands-on with the onboarding process and had multiple calls to make sure I had all the proper documents for the university and was enrolling in classes that were good for me. They also provided me with kitchen necessities and bedding when I first arrived at my flat in Scotland. During my entire time there, they planned day trips and other events to help us get comfortable in new situations and help us understand Scotland and its people.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Going abroad is a gratifying experience, but it is not easy. Spend time getting to know the country you're spending time in. Once you get there, try to make friends with people in your program or find local groups you can participate in. If you isolate yourself, it can get pretty lonely. Explore outside the city you're in and talk to anyone you can. The BIGGEST recommendation as well is to plan a budget and stick to it.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

During the week, you'll go to your classes and sometimes to events the program has planned. The week changes depending on your class schedule. On the weekend, you are free to do whatever you wish. I did a lot of exploring and late nights on the town. Getting familiar with the transportation is essential, as you'll need to use it for university.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

I had two biggest worries: I would have no friends and run out of money. I was scared that I would be too nervous to venture out and make new friends, so I had to really push out of my comfort zone and experience the awkwardness of meeting new people and who I got along with. I got involved in anything that I could. On the money aspect, it was really tricky because you can't work unless you're on a visa, and even then, you can't work more than 20hrs a week. Thankfully, my home university and CIEE helped me come up with a good budget plan that got me through my semester. Looking back, budgeting is super important, but at the same time, there are things I regret not doing because I was too worried about money. You only live once and you should live it as well as you can.

What is your favorite travel memory?

My favorite travel memory is from Myanmar. My friend and I did a guided hike through the countryside. We spent our nights above temples and the days wandering through another world. I remember being in awe of the differences, even between Thailand and Myanmar, and in the attitude of the people. They were the happiest people I had ever been around, even with the limited access they had to things that we feel that we "need".

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

CIEE has been a great place to work and has really motivated me to stay in the education industry. I love helping others and CIEE strives to give amazing customer service, always putting the teacher first. I have learned more about the process and how to best help others through it. I think, whatever you are doing in education, it is a place where there is always room to grow and continue to make an impact that has amazing ripple effects.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

The best stories are those when the students or teachers feel they have made an impact. However, maybe more than what we think we impact, the impact that others make on us is what truly inspires me. Travel and living abroad changes you, it demands growth and patience. Students that feel that impact from their students and communities reminds me why I love helping them get started.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I would choose our program in Chile. Santiago is such an incredible city and the chance to work in a college setting has always been enticing to me. You are able to be the lead teacher and have amazing experiences to grow as a teacher and of a Spanish speaker. The program feels so tight knit, and you create an amazing group of friends right when you arrive.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

CIEE goes above and beyond to encourage education on all levels. The Teach Abroad programs gives people the knowledge and confidence to go abroad, changing their lives forever and being able to change others lives through teaching. We work to break down stereotypes and we are upfront and honest about the challenges that we all have to face when we go abroad, but we make sure that participants have the tools to overcome these.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

The biggest factor in being a successful company is to truly care. We all care about our participants and the experiences that await them. I hope that all of our participants feel like and feel connected to a great support system before and after their arrival in their new home. Without heart, what we do doesn't mean anything.
