I absolutely loved traveling with the Travel For Teens organization. They are highly knowledgable about any location that you are traveling too. Little things such as knowing which restaurants have the best dinner or knowing the locals goes such a long way. They are able to keep everyone organized and safe at all times while giving lots of freedom to enjoy your time there. They also provide two meals a day which are breakfast and dinner so the only one that you need to worry about is lunch. Everyday they would give out free time in new areas to go out on your own to try the local cuisine on your own. This was such a nice way to meet new people from the place as well as the new people you are traveling with. I have several friends from all over the world that will always be my best friends from these trips!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I recommend going alone to try and meet new people

I went to Tanzania for three weeks during the summer of 2018, from late June until early July. Going into this trip I was so excited to meet girls living at a boarding school and to work in an orphanage. I was excited to meet all the people that I would be staying with and going on safaris. What I wasn't expecting was to have my outlook on life changed forever.
When we landed in Dar es Salaam after two long flights, we were greeted with the most love and joy I have ever seen and felt. Everyone was smiling and waiting to help us in any way they could. I was so overwhelmed at how amazing these people were. After being greeted we began the drive to our first hotel. On the way, I saw the poverty throughout the capital, but what I also saw was smiles. Smiles everywhere. I saw mothers carrying their children along the streets, with no shoes on; but they were still smiling and talking happily to each other.
Not only did I see this is the capital, but I also saw this with the girls and the orphans. These girls had nothing but their uniforms and books, yet they were so happy. They always thanked us for any little thing we did. I will never forget one time a sweet girl about my age (16), cried out of happiness just from me sitting with her and making friendship bracelets. The little kids in the orphanage that had been living there since before they could remember were all joy. All they wanted to do was hold your hand and be next to you.
These things will always stay with me, not because I got to go to Africa, or see zebras and lions and giraffes up close, or meet some amazing people who I still keep in touch with today, but because I saw people who realized that life is not about what you have, it's about who is in your life and how you chose to live it.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?

Traveling to Thailand with Travel for Teens in the Thailand Service and Adventure program has been one of the best decisions I had made so far. The staff and the kids I went with were wonderful! Each and every one of them made the trip a memorable experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life. The staff was really supportive when it came to dietary restrictions and allergies, and they made sure everyone had what they wanted and needed throughout the trip. They were also very flexible with what we wanted to do and the schedule. The places we visited were unique and beautiful, for example, we visited a Monkey Island near Phi Phi, where we witnessed the monkeys steal food from the visitors, or take off the lice from one another. We also visited an elephant sanctuary where we learned about the elephants and the different ways we can help them, in the long run, to stop them from getting abused. Not only that, but we were able to give back to the community by building a cement house from scratch in a tiny community in Chaing Mai. This trip not only was wonderful, but it made me feel at home and thankful for having the opportunity to live such a unique experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice is to embrace and enjoy all of the trip. The trip goes by so quickly and before you know it, it will be over. This is a wonderful, once in a lifetime experience that many people wish they could have the opportunity to enjoy. Be open to new opportunities and experiences, because one way or another, they will change either your character or your perspective of life. Most importantly have fun! And meet new and wonderful people!

My tft greece and italy trip was so much fun. My group and i had so many fun and personal experiences. we did cooking classes, scuba diving and so many other once in a lifetime cultural immersions. we walked through many wonderful market places and swam in many beautiful beaches. i would do the trip again in a heart beat and always talk very highly of this particular tft trip. the hotels in greece were amazing and i was extremely happy with them. the counselors gave us so much room to explore and grow on our trip. i highly recommend this trip to any interested as it will reach every expectation you may have. TFT does an amazing job in any trip that they have on their site but this one has been my overall favorite. i had gone to the paris and barcelona trip and i loved that trip as well.

What would you improve about this program?
Overall i was extremely happy with the trip my only negative review of the trip was the housing situations in italy. the hotels in greece were more than amazing but the hotels in italy were a little less than i had hoped for.

Traveling to Bali with Travel for Teens on the Bali Ultimate Service and Adventure trip has been one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I was excited to embrace long-haul international travel and finally explore somewhere that far from my home. Like a lot of people, I was nervous about how I was going to fit in within the group. That was fear was quickly squashed and I formed some very close friendships with everyone on the trip, from other travelers to the counselors to our amazing local guides. This trip was very diverse in many ways: both in the cultures of the regions we visited, the activities that we did, and the composition of our surrounding environment. This trip had a bit of everything, which I loved! We went from cityscapes to mountains to beaches. We had valuable service opportunities, working to restore coral reefs and practicing English with local children and more. We also had adventures like white water rafting, mountainside hikes, and scuba diving. It is really difficult to answer the question “what was your favorite part of the trip” because there really wasn’t one singular event; however, a part of the trip that I found really valuable was eating dinner with the prince. Talking with him provided insight into their culture and their views. He answered our questions about Bali and we answered his about America and Canada. 21 days flew by so fast and while our group is no longer in Bali, the friendships and memories remain.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Definitely sign up for Scuba Diving optional excursion. There is options for both certified and non-certified divers. Bali has great diving and it was an amazing experience to see life under the ocean there. Highly recommend doing that, especially if you have never dived before! You might find that you love it.

Kseniya Klyuchka

Kseniya always wanted to go to Australia, but this trip included a place that instantly became her favorite: New Zealand.

Why did you choose this program?

At first, I really wanted to study abroad and, while looking for those kind of programs, I stumbled upon Travel For Teens and never looked back. My original plan was to study in Australia for a year and so, when looking for a program with TFT that suited these requirements, I chose the service trip to Australia and New Zealand.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

While I got ready for the trip, TFT helped throughout the entire process. As a first time traveler, I had a huge amount of questions that TFT answered with as much detail as they could. They helped organize my flight to meet with the rest of the group and also the flight home. A few months before departure, I was able to contact and get to know the people that I was gonna spend three weeks with.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

An advice that I would give for traveling with TFT is to enjoy it. Don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and meet new and amazing people, to explore the place you are traveling to, and to keep in touch with the people that you meet. When choosing what place to travel too, there is no wrong answer because, when traveling with TFT, even the most boring place will be the best place.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

An average day with TFT is an amazing day, even if you have to wake up before the sun is out. An average day consists of a quick breakfast and then off to do something exciting like visiting the place where Lord of the Rings was filmed, paragliding over Queenstown, New Zealand, scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef, holding a koala, or climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge in Sydney, Australia. For lunch, there is an amazing variety of places to choose from and after off to another exciting adventure. Never a dull moment.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was leaving home, but from the moment I met up with the group, I didn't even think about it. I did miss my family and my own bed and room, but with so many things to do, my mind was distracted from that fear. Another thing that I was worried about was meeting new people. I am very shy, but traveling with so many amazing people you're bound to get out of your shell

What was the hardest part of your trip?

For me, and probably many other people starting out as travelers, the most difficult thing was packing. I tend to overpack for even two day trips with a suitcase that is meant for a few weeks. An advice that I would give about this is pack as little as you can. TFT provides a pack list specifically made for each program and I would definitely recommend sticking to it.

Sam Rae Roy

Job Title
Sales & Marketing Manager
Sam is an adventure enthusiast who has spent time living in both New England and Colorado. She has road tripped extensively around the continent, from Canada to Central America, which has aided in her development of our North America programs. In addition to her home continent, Sam has traveled all over Europe, Oceania, Asia, and Latin America. After numerous summers leading trips with TFT, she became a member of our Sales and Marketing team!

What is your favorite travel memory?

My favorite travel memory is the last night I spent in the backcountry on a 9-day trek in the Andean mountains of Peru. I had wanted to complete this trek for years but knew it involved an immense amount of preparation and planning. At our final campsite, not only was I overwhelmed with the feeling of accomplishment, but the beauty of my surroundings took my breath away.

A man who had lived in the area where I camped with my companion offered to cook us trout caught from the pristine alpine lake we were set up by and we took him up on the offer! We had a delicious meal in an incredible place knowing we had completed something we had longed to for years.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

I started as an ambitious counselor who wanted to make Travel For Teens her full-time career. Over the course of the last nine years that I have been with this company, I have grown and learned so much about how travel positively influences today's youth and myself as well. Travel For Teens fosters growth in everyone it touches and spreads a love for authentic travel around the world.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

The best story I've ever heard from a returning student is that, after traveling on our Hawaii Sea Turtle Service program, he had started an environmental awareness club at his school--and he was the president! It was really special to me that this student had felt so strongly about what he learned about recycling and sustainability in Hawaii that he wanted to share it with others.

To me, that is what Travel For Teens is all about: exposing today's youth to the world and all of its different cultures, beauty, needs, and teaching them to respect these cultures, maintain this beauty, and help our world's needs.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I would go on the Hawaii program over and over again because I feel passionate about our planet and sharing my love for sustainability with them. You have the opportunity not only to work with an endangered species while on the beautiful island of Maui but you see a beach on the North Shore that is infamous for collecting hundreds of thousands of tons of micro pieces of plastics that have traveled from the beautiful beaches of Hawaii from California and Asia. It really paints a picture of where the plastic fork you leave on the beach in LA ends up.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

We are unique because we allow our students to feel like a local instead of a member of a tour group. We don't travel in huge groups of 30 to chain restaurants and ride massive tour buses. We take local transportation and make food a part of our itinerary. It's important to us that our students feel like they've learned how to be a traveler at the end of their trip.

I was especially proud to be a part of this team when I was off in a small group visiting a museum a group of kids had wanted to see while a different group was at a market with a different leader. We ran into a different company who were all wearing matching backpacks following a leader with a giant pink sign in a straight line. They stuck out like a sore thumb and myself and my small group looked like a traveling family which, by that point, we were.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I think being honest and passionate about what you are selling makes all the difference in a successful company. The people that run TFT truly love what they do and believe in the product they are endorsing. This is enhanced by the natural honest the comes with truly believing in what you are giving and that leads to happy customers.
