Life in the Mother City

My semester abroad through Arcadia's College of Global Studies in Cape Town, South Africa was the single best experience of my life. Before leaving the U.S., I knew I was embarking on a trip of a lifetime, but little did I know the adventures that were in store for me and the personal challenges I would overcome. Leaving the U.S. in the dead of winter, and being greeted on arrival by Arcadia staff and a warm 80 degree sunny day was a good indication of the five months to come.

The classes that I chose at University of Cape Town (3) were very different to the small classroom setting I had been accustomed to. Going from classes of 20 students to lectures of 300 students was a challenge at first, but by the end of the semester I enjoyed the extra sense of freedom. A word for the wise, this is a top-tier university and as such the classes are rigorous in comparison to some study abroad classes. Yet, Arcadia's academic director, Alan, was very helpful in ensuring the success of all his students and making sure to help with any type of registration issues.

Cape Town itself is the perfect city to study abroad in. If you prefer the hustle and bustle of a vibrant urban city, Arcadia's residences are a quick 15 minute ride on a mini-bus taxi (for 6 rand/ $1usd) into the city. Day trips to the beach are easy; the train station was only a block away from my apartment, and about a $3 roundtrip fare. Similarly, if you prefer nature, hiking table mountain, lion's head, and exploring Kirstenbosch botanical gardens were frequent activities for me and my friends.

Other adventure activities that I was able to do while in Cape Town include going shark cage diving, bungee jumping off the tallest bungee bridge in the world, going on a luxury safari trip and seeing the "big 5", doing a full day wine tour in Stellenbosch, and going on a 10day horseback trek through the villages of Lesotho during Spring Break. The possibilities are simply endless for thrill seekers.

Overall, I've been looking for opportunities to return to Cape Town ever since I left. While I would recommend Cape Town no matter which study abroad company you choose, Arcadia's program is small and personal. My semester there were a total of 28 total student in our program, which meant that we all became close friends and we received the personal attention from the staff that you need during a new experience such as this.

What would you improve about this program?
The internet in the Arcadia houses is on a pay-as-you-go basis. While I did use it some for the occasional email and facebook check, you need to do your main research and photo uploading on the UCT campus. But in the end, being less connected to technology was positive part of my experience.

Such a great experience!

Studying abroad in Granada was one of the most enlightening experiences in my life. The city has such charm and history and there is always more to explore. You are in the heart of spanish culture, and although one of the main tourist attractions is in Granada, you would never know how touristy the city really is. The businesses and people do not accustom to the touristy, English lifestyle, but will speak English with you if you need. This allows you to fully immerse yourself in the spanish culture and learn all that you can. It is great that the city is smaller because you can walk anywhere in a short matter of time- anywhere in the city, to getting lost up in the mountains and hills behind the Alhambra. The staff of Arcadia and the CLM were fantastic. They are all so nice and will do anything to ensure you have the best experience. Overall this studying with this program in Granada was the best decision I have ever made and recommend it to anyone who is looking for a true spanish experience.

What would you improve about this program?
It could be better at helping students prepare for the semester when it comes to registering for classes and what to expect overall from the city.

Best City in the World

Studying abroad in Granada, Spain, last semester was one of the best experiences of my life. Getting to live in this beautiful city for five months with a host family, take classes, learn the language, and enjoy travel and time with the other students in my program was so rewarding.

As a Biology and Environmental Science double major, I loved the diversity of the area surrounding Granada, which is in the state of Andalucia. Because of its proximity to the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, the region contains a vast array of different ecosystems. I was able to study these environments in a course called Ecosystems of Andalucia, which we explored on field trips.

My Spanish classes helped me to improve my Spanish skills and were a cool way to meet other students, especially because I was the only American in the class. It was crazy to meet people from all over the world just in this class and it was a great way to learn Spanish because that was the only language we had in common! I remember looking at people sitting on either side of me in class one day and one was taking notes of Spanish words with translation into German, while another was translating into Italian. Of course, many students were learning English as well as Spanish, so I wasn't at a complete loss. Although, I do wish I had learned more Spanish before I studied abroad so that I could easily communicate with more people.

I learned a majority of my Spanish, however, by simply being in this Spanish-speaking country. Not many people in Granada spoke English, so I was forced to learn the language very quickly just by taking the local bus, ordering food and drinks in restaurants, asking where something was located in a store, etc. It was frustrating at times but I still loved every minute of it. Our Arcadia program directors also set up intercambios for us, where we would sit down with a Spanish local who wanted to learn English and speak in both Spanish and English so that both parties would benefit from the exchange.

In addition to my classes, I was able to volunteer to teach local elderly people to speak English by conversing with them - it was nice to know I wasn't the only one struggling to learn another language! This was generously set up through the Arcadia program directors. We mostly talked about the differences between Spanish and American culture and the stereotypes of each, which was cool to hear from the local people. The two cultures are very different, but also strikingly the same, the main differences being the timing of everything (work, meals) and the emphasis on family life over work life.

I could go on and on about my life in Spain and Granada and all the different experiences that I had there, as every day brought something new. This experience was so great for my personal and professional development, as I learned how to deal with being thrown into a situation where I didn't know anyone and was able to make friends, learn the language, and make as much out of it as possible. Plus, I didn't only spend time in Granada. On weekends and breaks I was able to travel throughout Europe to visit eight other countries and more than two dozen cities, including lots of cities throughout southern Spain - but Granada will always be my favorite.

What would you improve about this program?
More organized but optional trips throughout southern Spain/Europe would have been awesome to do with everyone in our program. Also, being able to choose classes and know your housing situation before getting there would be much better.

Do everything

If your looking to take classes and have an internship in London this is the program for you. Arcadia has a great global studies team for outside students and experience dealing with all kinds of study abroad programs. The London team is great as well and students from all over the country use the program. Compared to other programs students get more choices in terms of schools, classes, and living arrangement.

I chose to take classes at both Arcadia and City University London as well as an internship. This let me truly experience living, studying and working in London. I had a single room in central London close to my schools and work. Overall I got the most out of my time abroad and would recommend this program to anyone.

What would you improve about this program?
The workload was at times stressful and lets face it when your abroad you would rather not spend too much time working and studying.

My Experience in Maynooth

Ireland was not how I expected. The students were not as inviting as I hoped and I had a difficult time making friends with the regular students, not in my program. The courses were interesting and most of the professors were engaging. Some had thick accents which made my learning a little challenging, but I think going through that has made me a smarter and better student. The social scene at night was a good time. One main thing I strongly disliked was the study resources. The library would be filled with students and feel more stressful than relaxing so it was challenging to complete my work. I loved the town and thought it was extremely useful to have the local stores, bus stops, and restaurants so close by. Grocery shopping was convenient and cheap as well which made life easier. My traveling was what made my experience so great. The shuttles to and from the airport and the buses that went to Dublin made just about any destination possible and I definitely took advantage of that. Overall, I think if I were to do it again, I would have picked a different town, but I am forever grateful for my experience.

Best summer of my life

This program is spectacular. The teachers and quality of the classes are as amazing as the opportunities to explore, travel, and experience London from the inside. I was able to travel to Scotland, and Wales, as well as areas around London including Bath, Stonehenge etc. The academics are not all time consuming to prevent you from seeing the city. They're challenging and engaging enough to keep you excited but sill allow your weekends to explore.

The program also does a really good job during orientation to get you used to the city and know what to expect. They send you on little scavenger hunts to try foods from certain markets or walk through famous parks. They also get you acquainted with the public transit system, the currency, and the slang of the city so you can communicate easily with the locals.

I am a theater major so my favorite part of the trip was how many shows I was able to see. Arcadia told us our opportunities to get discounted tickets to west end shows and I was a part of the theater class which gave me tickets to 5 different shows. I was able to see 8 shows in 8 weeks.

Overall, I would recommend this program to anyone. It's an incredible experience for not a lot of money in comparison to other abroad programs. The staff are all so kind and helpful and want to make your stay in London as awesome as possible. I also made so many friendships that have lasted long after the program ended.

Amazing Experience

Studying abroad in Florence, Italy was the best experience in my life. From living so close to the Duomo, being able to walk to my school and experience the culture firsthand was amazing. I felt extremely safe as I would always travel in groups, and the staff provided us with many useful tips on how to get around. I would wake up in the morning, go to the local bakery outside my apartment to get an espresso, walk to school, complete my classes, and walk home and cook dinner with my friends. At night, we would often go out to the clubs. Florence had an amazing social scene. As for school, my teachers all were extremely nice and helpful and seemed to care about they students. I would study abroad again in one second.

What would you improve about this program?
The only thing I would change about this program would be the various spread out locations of the living spaces. We all lived very spread out and sometimes it would be hard to meet up if it was late at night and someone lived alone.

Living in Florence

In September of 2013, I landed in Florence and did a full academic year at Accademia Italiana. Being a fashion major, this was an amazing fit for me personally but I was also able to connect with students from a diverse range of concentrations, including graphic design, interior design, and art history. I never realized how fully I had immersed into my life in Italy until a comment from my wonderful Pattern Drafting professor caught my attention. She responded to a request for me to move my seat by saying: "But she always sits there!" Having been there only one semester, I was already a fixture in university life and always found the staff welcoming and helpful.

In addition to their great art and design courses, Accademia Italiana offers Italian language courses to all of its students. I've studied Italian since high school and this was an amazing chance for me to practice
my skills and really dive into learning conversational Italian. Though my speech still isn't perfect, after spending a year in Florence I can understand almost everything I hear, which is a huge improvement from how I was when I landed. Accademia also offers separate weekend trips that are free for students and go to different cities including Rome, Sorrento, Siena, and more; independent travel is also extremely easy to organize.

Summing up an entire year of living in Florence is incredibly hard to do. All in all, Arcadia and Accademia Italiana gave me the opportunity to really establish a life abroad. I was not simply a student going overseas to party and mingle only with other American students, I became a resident in Florence and learned more about the city and its culture than I ever expected and made lasting friendships that are still going strong almost another year later.

What would you improve about this program?
Every opportunity is what you make of it, so educating yourself about a host country before going abroad is essential. My only advice is to keep in mind that Accademia Italiana is a renowned design school with locations in Florence and Rome. A simple Google search will tell you this and it probably isn’t the best choice for students outside of the fields of art and design.

Also, though travel within Europe is considerably cheaper than if you were coming from the U.S., traveling across countries is still quite expensive and I found that the idea of taking multiple weekend excursions all over Europe was unrealistic on a student budget.

Underwhelming

We did not have the opportunity to interact with people outside of our group of 7 in Paris. There was no cultural immersion. They were not straightforward or clear on academics and they said they'd offer courses that they didn't. I felt separated from the culture as well. I would absolutely not recommend this program.

Set Yourself Apart and Get Ahead!

The Dublin Internship program is the perfect conglomerate of culture, society and politics. The program uniquely pairs class requirements with internship work which provides a nice variety in schedule - and plenty of time to enjoy Dublin! The benefits of this program extend beyond your time abroad. Working in the Irish Parliament is a real resume builder and definitely gets the attention of schools, professionals and employers.

What would you improve about this program?
The staff support and communication was poor. Many students became frustrated due to a lack of communication regarding student expectations as well as a minimal response to student needs.
