Time of my life!

I am so lucky to have had the opportunity to study abroad in Athens, Greece in the fall semester of 2024. It was the perfect time of the year to travel there because it was beautiful weather and many of the islands around the main land were still open and many people were still actively traveling around and going on vacations. I loved getting to see all of the incredible sights in Athens as well, like the Parthenon, but I also loved seeing places like the Meteora in Kalabaka and Kastraki. CIS provided excursions were very well coordinated and exciting, and I was so happy to see the places that I maybe would not have been able to see without their help. I loved being able to experience the Greek culture, especially the food, which had to have been one of my favorite parts of the entire trip. I would recommend this trip to anyone who wants to have an amazing adventure and to explore some of the richest, oldest history in the world.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I tried a traditional meal called kokoretsi which is commonly eaten during Easter when lent is over. It is also known as goat or sheep intestine, and it was not something I particularly liked but I am glad I got to try something that is so special to the Hellenic culture.
Pros
  • CIS Excursions were incredible opportunities
  • Meeting so many friends
Cons
  • The classes can be difficult because most courses are graded exclusively by the midterm and final grades.
  • Some aspects of the housing were not perfect but nothing that couldn't be dealt with.

A January-Term Alum’s Summer Experience

I was able to attend 2 sessions during the summer and took the Management in Japanese Corporations and Japanese Intermediate courses. I had previously attended the January program at the same university so I knew what I was getting into. The staff and faculty are extremely kind and accommodating. The excursions were very informative, my favorite being the calligraphy lesson. There is also plenty of time to explore Japan outside of class, some classes even having field trips. If I were to compare the January and Summer terms:

- the winter is fairly mild (compared to New Jersey, United States of America) and the summer is fairly humid with temperatures being a little high.
- the summer is lot a more lively with a lot more festivals and outdoor events (ex. Firework shows) happening around Japan. There also is a lot more foreign tourists around Tokyo in the summer as well

Overall I don’t think I have too big of a preference between the two because they both offer slightly different experiences. It really depends on what you are looking to do in Japan/your travel style. If you prefer a little more lively atmosphere or enjoy the warmer weather then I’d definitely recommend the summer sessions.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
For the Management in Japanese Corporations course we took a field trip to a factory. Which was an very interesting experience that I don’t think I would have had had I not taken the course.
Pros
  • Staff and faculty are extremely kind and accommodating
  • Plenty of time to explore Japan
  • Lively atmosphere
Cons
  • Humidity and heat

A 2-timers’ perspective

I was fortunate to join both the 2024 and 2025 January programs during my time in college. Both times the staff and faculty were excellent and offered a wonderful experience for everyone. While the schedule may seem tight at first glance there was ample time to explore the local areas and even travel further across Japan. The cultural excursions were also very informative and enjoyable, my favorite being the calligraphy lesson. Be prepared to use a lot of trains as it makes getting around a lot easier, but most areas are extremely walkable.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone a little bit, try to experience something new.
Pros
  • Classes were wonderful
  • Excursions were fun and informative
  • Ample time to explore
Cons
  • It flies by quickly

Limerick, Ireland

My experience in Limerick, Ireland with CIS was amazing! The housing that CIS put us in was amazing and they took care of us every step of the way. Our onsite director, Karina, did such a good job making herself available to us. Karina planned excursions for us to help us live the local life and become familiar to Ireland. The experience I had at the University of Limerick was made exponentially better by the dedication given by CIS. There is nothing I would have changed about my experience. I enjoyed every second!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I did in Limerick was the Limerick People's Museum. I stumbled into the museum at a slow time and got an extremely thorough and personal tour by a man named Cathal. The museum is a hidden gem in the city!
Pros
  • Quiet housing location
  • Huge campus presence
  • Reliable transport to other hubs in Ireland
Cons
  • Irish students go home on weekends

Semester at Stirling - adventures in the gateway to the highlands

I spent a fall semester in Stirling, Scotland and it was truly remarkable! Stirling is the perfect middle ground for travelers wishing to explore Scotland. It is small and homey awhile still having plenty to do in your community. Stirling is accessible for a quick train ride to cities like Edinburgh or Glasgow or for a day trip into the highlands. If you love the beauty of nature but like having accessibility to city like activities Stirling is perfect for you! And if your a history buff like me, Stirling is the site of many famous battles and previously home to famous Scottish monarchs and monuments. There are also several beautiful hikes in the area that you don’t have to go too far to access. I love everything about Stirling truly. It is a place where, in my brief time there, I felt a true sense of belonging and peace. A beautiful place with even more beautiful and kind people.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I ate haggis for the first time which was interesting to say the least. As a Scottish delicacy I had to try it, but make sure you get it from a fancier restaurant if you do end up trying it. Let’s just say it’s better seasoned at a nicer restaurant and they can make your forget what your eating. But it was still a fun thing to say I tried.
Pros
  • Lovely and kind people
  • Beautiful landscapes
  • History rich area

The Best Semester of My Life

I was so overwhelmed when I was tasked with choosing a provider, but after further research, I chose CIS Abroad. I did not know what to expect, but I was excited. Upon arriving in Florence, I was immediately met by Martina, one of our site leaders. This was so helpful because I did not have to figure out where to go or what to do, she just showed me. My housing was also amazing. I met my amazing roommate, Julie, and we stayed at The Social Hub. We were surrounded by other people in our program and got to meet more of them during our orientation. Throughout the whole semester, I felt nothing but support from CIS Abroad, especially from Romina and Martina. They made me feel at home during such a stressful time in a new country. CIS Abroad provided so many fun activities, one of my favorite being our spa trip. So relaxing! In the end, I am so happy with my choice of CIS Abroad and encourage everyone to use them!

Pros
  • Multiple Excursions
  • Constant Support
  • Amazing Housing

Semester in Rome!

Studying abroad was one of the best decisions I have ever made. When I left for Rome, I did not know anyone else studying abroad and I had no idea what to expect. I ended up building lifelong friendships while exploring the most beautiful city in the world. Rome is a great spot to study abroad as there is so much to see and do within the city. There was always something for me and my friends to explore and we were always amazed by the natural beauty combined with the history. CIS Abroad also does a great job of helping you learn more about the Italian culture. This allows you to see a different side of Rome and Italy that widens your perspective.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travelers is to make the most of your abroad experience. There is so much that one can do in Rome, and even all of Italy. Whether it's taking a walk to see a historical monument, going to see the Vatican City, or even as little as getting gelato, make the most of your time!! The semester flies by, and the opportunity to study abroad is once in a lifetime.
Pros
  • Walkable
  • Super easy location to travel out of
  • Great community

Italian life is the best life!

While studying abroad in Florence Italy, CIS abroad offered me tremendous personal, academic, and professional growth through experiential learning activities and personal travel. Living and studying in a new country forces students to step outside their comfort zone as they navigate unfamiliar environments, problem-solve, and manage responsibilities independently, all of which foster greater self-confidence. It took me a while to find myself in this city, but sharing my daily experiences and creative growth not only inspires others but also serves as a personal reminder of how far I’ve come in embracing a place that once felt unfamiliar. One of the aspects I cherish most during my time abroad is experiencing the slower pace of life, the cultural traditions, and the opportunity to stroll through the city center, immersed in the rich history and vibrant Italian lifestyle. Immersing yourself in a new culture broadens your perspective, allowing you to understand and appreciate different viewpoints, traditions, and ways of life, encouraging empathy and open-mindedness.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice would be to not be afraid to do things alone! One thing you cannot do enough is TRAVEL! I studied abroad not knowing a single person and ended up meeting a lot of new people and also doing a lot of things by myself. Don't be afraid to go alone. You can learn a whole lot about what you are capable of and won't develop a greater set of skills or self-confidence in any other way. Traveling and figuring out new cities in an unfamiliar language on your own is not only fun but a fulfilling way to spend your time studying abroad.
Pros
  • FOOD
  • rich and inviting culture
  • art and architectural history
Cons
  • Public transportation
  • getting used to walking
  • meeting people outside my program wasn't always easy

Everyone should study abroad!!

I loved studying abroad through CIS! I had an incredible experience and was surrounded by amazing people. I had the opportunity to participate in a multitude of different events and gatherings with other students, which helped build a community. However, we were allotted a lot of freedoms, which is amazing. I felt safe and like if I had an issue, I had a support system who would help me find a solution. I truly believe everyone should study abroad if they are able. It changed my life. I made lifelong friends in Italy who will continue to be in my life for a long time to come. Being in Italy was a dream come true and I am so grateful for CIS for creating such an amazing program for me to be able to shine and thrive in.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I solo traveled to Rome and I got lost in the city without my phone for a while. I was terrified! However, my Italian was good enough I was able to ask for directions back to where I needed to be.
Pros
  • Good housing
  • Group trips
  • Supportive staff
Cons
  • Provided food was not very good
  • Bad housing location
  • Homesickness!!
