A great program! I highly recommend

Máximo nivel Manuel Antonio Costa Rica— the staff are amazing! They are so friendly and helpful and I had so much fun with all the activities; paint night and making empanadas for the cooking class was my favourite. I met so many new people from all over the world and my teacher made Spanish lessons so much fun. They provide an excellent orientation and I felt like I always had support from the staff if I had any questions or emergencies. Such great people. The facility is beautiful, new and has a pool to use to cool off after class. I am so sad to leave but I hope to come back soon!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take advantage of the activities they offer! Paint night and cooking classes were my favourite.
Pros
  • Friendly and supportive staff
  • Free activities
  • Meeting new people
Cons
  • As if I can think of any cons
  • Sometimes it rained and I had to walk in the rain haha
  • Having to leave after meeting such great people :(

Personal, Caring, Motivating, and Encouraging

I'm almost 60 years old and haven't been a student in several decades. I decided to take the online TEFL course to have an option for a flexible part-time job to do during my retirement. I was completely intimidated by online teaching and had quite the steep learning curve. The course was challenging and definitely a Masters level course. Sean (lead TEFL trainer) went above and beyond to help me succeed!! I really can't say enough about Sean's dedication and caring. I didn't know how to use Zoom or Google docs, and Sean spent hours and hours and hours coaching me through navigating the new (to me) technology. I taught in person classes many years ago, but methodologies have changed drastically too. I am still not a huge fan of online learning platforms, but I learned SO MUCH taking this course. I am truly grateful to Sean for all of his help and encouragement. I decided to also take an in-person practicum in Peru so that I can continue to learn (in person this time) from my teacher/mentor! I'm looking forward to continuing my education with Maximo Nivel this winter.

The TEFL program in Antigua is great

I joined the program more as an impulse and without expectations, but I am very happy I did. It was a great experience, very good learning and a lot of fun. The course was intense and compact, but the teacher Wayne Summerbell and my fellow students made the time fly by.
Wayne was good, he was very good. He went beyond the role as a teacher and became a coach, motivator, friend and when I was down and lost he lifted me up and showed me the way.
I will certainly recommend the course for its teaching techniques and personal skills development.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising part of the program was to see how fast my fellow students and myself developed teaching skills. From nervously, stumbling and hopeless teachers to confident and excellent teachers.
Pros
  • Professional teacher
  • Good program/curriculum
  • Good location

Teaching English At CTP

I thought that this was great experience because i was able to learn to a lot about my students and connect with them as well. I also thought that they were able to learn a lot of english specifically working with pronunciation in vowels and sounds. Many of the students felt comfortable enough to ask me ask me questions about different topics when they were confused and come up to me after and talk to me too. I thought that getting to connect with the teachers was also really special because they really connected me as well.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
When students invited me to the haunted house with them after school
Pros
  • connected with students
  • learned about more english myself
  • connected with teachers
Cons
  • a little difficult to figure out which teachers and when they’re working with the students

TEFL Certification with Maximo Nivel

Maximo Nivel did a great job preparing me to teach. The course of study was very thorough and I learned so much! I want to teach online, so the online nature of the course was perfect for me. I liked that even the practical teaching was done online. I completed the entire program from my own home! My instructor, Sean, was very helpful and patient, and gave me excellent feedback on my progress. The best part was the practical teaching for one week at the end of the course. I would highly recommend Maximo Nivel to anyone wanting to teach English as a foreign language.

I Am Equipped!

When I signed up for the Maximo Nivel on-line TEFL course, I wasn't really sure how I would use my training. I am an older student and work full time in an administrative position at a university. Since then, doors have opened to put my training to use now instead of having to wait until I retire. I am a volunteer with our local literacy organization. Also, after submitting a proposal to my manager, I have started tutoring our international students as part of my duties at work. Amazing! If you build it, they really do come! Special shout-out to my instructor, Sean, who was very patient with my lack of confidence and my busy schedule when it came time to book my week of practice teaching. I have learned so much and now feel equipped to be a better volunteer and a better tutor. If you're thinking about TEFL, I would highly recommend Maximo Nivel.

What would you improve about this program?
I would add a section to address private tutoring (teaching individuals). All the material was geared towards teaching a group class.
Pros
  • well-organized, clear, easy to understand materials
  • quick turn around for grading assignments
  • opportunity to practice teaching
Cons
  • There were a few times when the website did not work so I could not access the material. However, this may have been a problem with my internet.
  • As mentioned above, please add some specific tips for teaching individuals.

TFL Course experience

I had such a positive learning experience all thanks to my amazing TFL trainer Wayne Summerbell, who has been such an incredible teacher and mentor! The 4 weeks of training were compact with so much information but with the smooth delivery and energy of the classroom, the time flew by so quickly! I have left the course with so much knowledge, transferable skills, and most importantly, passion and excitement to apply what I have learned. I have learned so much from observing what a successful teacher looks like.

What was your funniest moment?
Our first teaching experience, we thought vocabulary to volunteer students. We selected words to teach to the class and as they were English learners we could not explain. It was very fun trying to elicit the words for the first time.
Pros
  • Learning experience, with transferable skills
  • Exposure to how to teach successfully
  • Laughter & friendships
Cons
  • Compact course
  • Consistency and attention required every day

Costa Rica is the best

My name is Khalifa and I am 54 years old man from United Arab Emirates. I am retired and like to travel a lot. My trip to Costa Rica was so rewarding as I felt I was making a positive impact on society while enjoying the travel. My experience in Costa Rica and with Maximo Nivel was a game-changer in my life. I encourage everyone to devote some of their time to helping society by choosing a program suitable to their needs. And if you are thinking about traveling to Latin America consider Costa Rica to be your destination. Costa Rica is very beautiful and the people here are amazing

What was your funniest moment?
I participated in a cooking class in Maximo nivel while I don’t like cooking. The reason was to eat only. I hope nobody noticed
Pros
  • Charming people
  • Great weather
  • Delicious food

Yay

This course exceeded all of my expectations in a positive way. It was challenging, but I looked forward to each day of class and practical teaching. I cannot understate how much Maximo Nivel Antigua benefits greatly from their incredible TEFL trainer- Wayne Summerbell- who is kind, supportive, and incredibly knowledgable.

The classroom time, resources, and constant support that was provided allowed all in our cohort to be successful and enjoy our time together. We didn't know what to expect when we signed up, but would strongly recommend to anyone considering.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Do it, you won't regret it! Stay an extra week if you want to explore the area.
Pros
  • Wayne
  • Antigua is a beautiful place
  • Learners are lovely
