Valencia or Bust!

All my life I have been urging you to go to Spain. I am still studying Spanish, and my time abroad really helped me understand the importance of language and what travel means to me. When I saw Valencia, I knew immediately that this program would provide me with a well-rounded experience! From excursions to just being able to talk to someone who would understand any problems I may run into, USAC did a good job. I really recommend this program and Valencia to those wanting to make friends and know what it is like to travel abroad for a semester. The program made it easy to understand the area and the teachers through the host university provided were also great advisors for learning more about local tips and tricks. Although Valencia is the 3rd larger city in Spain, I still recommend it to everyone looking to get an overall experience in Spain, since it is busy, but still homelike, and it provides great transportation to anywhere in Spain or even Europe in general. My greatest piece of advice is that if you travel to Valencia between January and May, please please bring layers or winter wear. Spain still gets cold! Buenas suerte! (Good luck!)

Pros
  • Public transportation and other travel methods.
  • Along the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Great social activities (shopping, nature adventures, concerts, nightlife, language learning).
Cons
  • Not super traditional and historical like other smaller cities in Spain.
  • Bigger class sizes means less one-one-one with teachers.

Maastricht

Classes we good, loved both my professors. The area was incredible and close to so many other amazing places! Met a lot of amazing people and made lasting friendships. It was easy to see a lot of the city by biking and had a lot of great recommendations from locals from the school. Was able to travel to Switzerland and hike the alps which was unbelievable. I would definitely recommend this program to others and want to travel back at some point. I was also able to share my experience with my family when they came to visit.

Pros
  • Travel distance
  • Met lots of friends
  • Loved the area
Cons
  • Heat waves with no ac
  • Biking uphill
  • Communal kitchen was slightly gross

Better Than I Could Dream

I chose to study abroad in the Czech Republic because I wanted to experience the surrounding countries and what it might be like to live in a location where I didn't have any pre-knowledge about the location.
It was amazing.
Not only were the people there awesome, they were very professional and knew what they were doing. It was just the right mix of guidance and free-range to allow me to explore just what Prague and the surrounding areas had to offer.
USAC was very straightforward in everything I had to do and nothing was very difficult. The courses I took were fun, informative, and included a lot of activities around the city (not just being stuck in a classroom!) I already miss it a lot and I highly encourage anyone looking for a study abroad opportunity to try this out. Truly memories of a life-time.

Pros
  • Tons of museums
  • Wonderful staff
  • Historical and walkable
Cons
  • Weather is something to be prepared for

USAC Pau: Once in a lifetime

Bonjour! My experience in Pau was amazing! Arriving in France we were immediately greeted by some of the nicest people I've ever met. Magali and Robina were amazing program directors who were ready at the drop of a hat to help us in any way. We were immediately moved into our apartment complexes and our friends who were doing homestay went to their houses. It was such an incredible experience to be independent in a foreign country. I loved how easily accessible everything was especially through public transportation which is leaps and bounds ahead of the US. I enjoyed going to class every day which was fully immersive and I learned so much I made lifelong friends there who I still keep in contact with even though we're thousands of miles apart. The city itself was breathtaking. The Chateau, the parks, museums, clubs, restaurants and shops were amazing. I am anxious to visit again. Although the heat wave posed some issues for travel, the weather was overall pleasant, and it made traveling through the Pyrenees such a memorable experience. I loved visiting the Basque country and getting to know all the locals, they were such unique and kind people. Pau was truly the time of my life. Everyday since I’ve come back to the US, I long to return to the Béarn region. Because of my time in Pau, I have decided to apply to the TAPIF program to teach English in france. I really hope I get accepted. And if I could somehow teach in Pau, that would be a dream come true. Thank you so much USAC for this opportunity!

Pros
  • Gorgeous geography. The Pyrenees cannot be beat. I could see Pic du Midi d'Ossau from my room.
  • Location is everything. Bordeaux, Toulouse, Lac de Gaube, Spain, everything is so close.
  • Size. Not all the hustle and bustle of Paris. Get to experience true French culture.
Cons
  • Limited English access. If you're not comfortable with your French skills be warned. It's not like Paris where everyone speaks English.
  • Train station. The people at the train station were rude and the actual building itself is a bit rundown and sketchy.

An incredible experience!

I loved pretty much everything about this course! It was my first time leaving the country, let alone studying abroad, and the folks at USAC were incredibly helpful with making everything go smoothly the entire time, both before arrival and during the semester. There were a lot of fun activities that took me to a lot of places in London, and with them happening about once every couple weekends, there was plenty of time to focus on studies while having fun and exploring. London Met is a great university as well, confusing campus layout aside. The only thing I have as a "negative" is that The Arcade (student dorms available through USAC, where the majority of students will stay at) is located in a very, very loud part of town, and it was common for the fire alarm to go off at least once a week (outside of tests, which they inform you about beforehand). With its location on Holloway Road, though, there's easy access to a pharmacy, multiple grocery stores, fast food and sit-down restaurants, and bus stops and tube stations. Wi-Fi is also stable, fast, and very reliable if you need to have online calls. If you're someone who might struggle with the constant city noise though, it may be beneficial to find lodgings elsewhere. Nothing against USAC for this, of course, but something I thought I'd mention regardless!

Pros
  • Cultural Emersion
  • Great Support Team
  • Fun activities that take you out your comfort zone

Life Changing Opportunity!

I couldn’t be more happy with my decision to study abroad through USAC! USAC made the process easy and provided all of the students with a lot of support throughout the entire experience. I was extremely happy with my professors and the classes that I took during my semester abroad. I stayed with a wonderful host family and my Spanish improved a ton and I learned so much about the Spanish culture and history through my home stay. I made great friends and got to travel a ton! Studying abroad is truly and experience of a lifetime and I’m very grateful I chose to go through USAC!

Pros
  • Adventure
  • Fun
  • Tourism

An amazing experience!

Going abroad has been my dream since I started going to school. It impacted which college I chose; I went to UWEC which has a solid study abroad program. I found this experience to be enlightening and fun. I would also say that it wasn’t without it’s stresses. The Bilbao program was amazing and getting us to do things in the community including a cooking class and a kayaking journey. The teachers were great and very understanding (I got covid my first week there). I felt supported by the program leaders and they helped me through the tough experience of being sick while abroad. The best advice I can offer is to be prepared, make friends when you arrive (friends form fast, something I missed out on from being sick), plan your trips out before leaving, be courteous of the locals, and enjoy as much as you can while there. Also bring a great pair of walking shoes as that is the main mode of transport (although there is a train system and bus system that aren't too difficult to operate). Places to visit and things to try: Guggenheim, Kalimotxo (drink native to Basque country), anything involving baked goods

Pros
  • Super safe
  • Amazing food
  • Nice and helpful people
Cons
  • Being alone (especially when got Covid-19)
  • Adjusting to having less support (mental health wise)

Summer in Seoul

I applied to the 6-week summer program at Yonsei in Seoul. I had so much fun and got to meet so many new people and have a lot of new experiences. As a young woman I was nervous about traveling alone in a foreign country but I felt completely safe both on and off campus. While there I got to see and experience a lot of things I would not have been able to in America including going to a K-pop concert and seeing several traditional Korean Palaces. Seoul is great as there are a lot of traditional cultural elements to see such as the Hangeul Museum and Hanoks but Seoul also has things to do for young people. While I personally like K-pop and went to see a bunch of stuff around that you don't have to be there is a lot of really awesome nightlife and shopping as well. I already knew some Korean which was a huge help but people who didn’t know any Korean also had no problem traveling around the city as lots of things were in both Korean and English or had pictures to help.

Pros
  • Lots of very good food everywhere
  • Very safe
  • Lots to do from tradtional korean palaces and culture to kpop and clubbing
Cons
  • You may get some looks for being foreign

The experience of a lifetime!

I absolutely adored my experience with the USAC Alicante program! Not only was the staff accessible and easy to communicate with before departure, but once I arrived in Alicante the staff was extremely helpful and helped accommodate myself and all students in every way they could. This program did a great job providing opportunities for students to authentically explore Spain while providing the avenues for independent adventure as well. Alicante is easy to navigate, inexpensive, and has a great airport!

Pros
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to navigate by foot or public transportation
  • Kind and welcoming people
Cons
  • Not super accessible if you do not speak Spanish
  • Some tourists
  • The apartment I lived in did not have an elevator.

Study Abroad Helped Me Plan for My Future Career!

Throughout my entire undergraduate experience, I was certain that I wanted to work and live abroad after graduation. This was a goal I held firmly in my mind, despite having never been out of the country at all, which is why I made the decision to study abroad. During my senior year, it dawned on me that it would have been a major gamble to move across the world without any prior experience! The London Met Summer I Program was the perfect opportunity for me to determine whether or not my career goal was realistic. The length, one month, was the perfect amount of time to adjust to the city without becoming too homesick. The mix of cultural similarities and differences was varied enough that I was pushed outside of my comfort zone in a helpful way, without being totally confused. The resident director in London for USAC is the coolest person ever and planned incredible activities for our group throughout the month. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is new to international travel and looking to expand their worldview in a fun, but structured way!

Pros
  • A summer program made it so that I did not miss a semester at my home university with my friends.
  • London doesn't technically have a language barrier, although you are still exposed to hundreds of different languages due to the city's diverse population.
  • Our group was very small, so it was easy to get to know each other in a short amount of time.
Cons
  • Our living situation was not fantastic, although it was manageable for a month-long program.
  • A month does not give a lot of time to travel outside of the U.K., so if you are wanting to explore several countries, plan that in advance.
