I had a great time in Medellin. I achieved professional objectives, getting employment on my return. The city was great, climate wonderful, the people excellent.
As a mature age intern trying to get back into IT, I was afraid that I wouldn't be getting relevant experience. But I was placed with a web startup as a programmer, and gained a lot of useful experience. I'm now back home working with a web startup in a much more senior position.
I wouldn't hesitate to go back to Medellin at any time. The city has a great vibe, in many ways with more similarities to an Australian city than a Latin American city.
The support from Intern Latin America was superb. For instance, I had a dental problem- they accompanied me to the dentist, even in the surgery, to ensure that we communicated properly.
I highly recommend the program, even to mature age people seeking to change career paths.
Response from API Intern Group
Dear Marlene,
We are sorry that you did not enjoy your internship experience.
We have worked with the fashion company where you interned for a long period of time, and the general feedback we have received has been positive from past program participants. Being involved in the busy preparations for Colombian fashion week should have been an exciting opportunity.
It is important to underline that the Colombian work culture is certainly very different from the Danish style. It is crucial that interns here are more proactive than they might be accustomed to in their home country. Interns in Colombian work culture are expected to regularly be asking supervisors for more tasks and feedback, and areas where they can get involved. It is a fluid model where communication is paramount and the onus is on the intern to show themselves as proactive, keen and ready to contribute. We encouraged you to speak with your supervisor, and we spoke with him ourselves to help bridge this cultural gap – but you left the role early on without giving the situation time to improve.
Nevertheless, we take your comments and all feedback extremely seriously and have fed them in to the company so that their internships in the future can be as structured and meaningful as possible.
