Amazing experience

Absolutely enjoyed my internship in Medellin! There’s something about the people, the energy, and the openness here that makes it such a special place to learn and grow.

Over these few months I learned a lot, worked on real projects, and was trusted with responsibilities that pushed me to improve every day. More than anything, I had a team that gave me the space to try, ask questions, and grow.

I couldn’t have asked for a better experience, both professionally and personally. Would definitely recommend it!

Medellin: one of the experiences of my life

I stayed in Medellin for two months; it was very difficult at first because I was alone and didn't know anybody. I shared very memorable moments with the other students, thanks to Mariana (our coordinator). The city is cheerful, colourful and perfect for those who seek nature and nightlife. I worked as HR manager, and the experience was totally different from what I expected: I made new friendships with two colleagues, who, from the moment I arrived, showed me everything in Medellin. We went hiking, explored the nearby area of Medellin, and ate together every weekend local food. I'm so glad to have met them; they even accompanied me to the airport (we are still in contact). Medellin has very sociable people: they are very welcoming and always with a smile on their faces. I learned from this city the importance of being positive and always kind to people. For the professional part, I experimented with what work means: waking up early, preparing your lunch, taking the bus, working, and then coming back home in the evening just to cook dinner and go to bed. At first, this routine might be uncomfortable, but I can assure you that from this experience, you gain a new perspective on the world and personal growth. If I had known how this experience would have been, I would have chosen a 3-month program.

What was your funniest moment?
I was without any doubt when all the other students and I went on the CHIVA!!

Amazing Experience

As a 21 year old intern who recently graduated with international business experience, this enhanced my professional career by allowing me the opportunity to live outside of the country and work. The experience coordinators in Medellin (Mariana and Vale) were amazing. The accommodations, support, and activities planned were an amazing addition in conjunction with the internship that has so helpfully boosted my career progress. The experience and networking opportunities I have obtained from this experience are irreplaceable.

Amazing experience

Hiii, I’m Sam! I did a 6 week internship at the Gobernación de Antioquia in the field of government and politics. I had an amazing experience during my time in Medellín. The city has a bunch of super cool viewpoints, restaurants, malls, etc. There is so much to do that you’ll never find yourself being bored. I definitely recommend this experience not only for experience in your desired career field but living abroad teaches you a lot about yourself. The Intern Group also plans group activities which are super fun and make it easy to connect with the other interns. I loved my experience so much that I’m already thinking of going back to Medellin!

An Amazing experience

My time in Colombia was a life changing experience, I met the most amazing people and loved my coworkers. I loved my placement and it allowed me to learn so much about the community and what I want for my future. Mariana who was my coordinator was the most amazing person and she was always willing to assist with any issues that came up during my program and she planned super fun activities. This program made me realize that I want to continue to travel through my life, and experience many new cultures.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take all your spare time to travel outside of the city. The city is amazing but the surrounding small towns have the most amazing things to see.
Pros
  • Great for your resume
  • learn a new language
  • meet new people

Support Team was Incredible

Marianna was my main point of contact in Colombia and she was absolutely brilliant. There was nothing she couldn’t help with and I massively enjoyed her company. Vale was brilliant over comms and it was a pleasure to meet her in person later in my trip. Medellín was made to feel very safe to us all, to the extent that we would often leave the city via public transport to explore surrounding areas and be able to navigate around quite easily. Would highly recommend - especially for uni students or those about to start uni.

I would live in Colombia!!

Genuinely I loved Medellin, I would live there! Colombian people are some of the nicest people I have ever met. Additionally, the city offers so many different activities including shopping at their extremely large malls, amusement parks, flea markets, escape, rooms, exotic fruit, tours, coffee tours, etc. They have an excellent transportation system via the metro and the cable cars. They also have a great taxi system. The nature was also stunning! It feels like you are in the garden of eden! This is a lovely place!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Probably having to speak spanish to people constantly and messing up sometimes but I think these experiences helped me with my spanish language learning
Pros
  • Nice People
  • Great Transportation System
  • Lots of Activities
Cons
  • AC is not as strong as the US
  • Rush hour traffic

Exploring Colombia as University Student

I am abroad in Colombia with 10 other students from UPenn, and our support from the coordinators is phenomenal. They often give us great recommendations on places to travel, shop, eat, and explore. We really enjoyed our time here and exploring a whole new culture of music, dance, and food. Our coordinators were also very helpful in times of need especially when I grew sick, providing me with assistance. Overall they are very nice people and made me enjoy Colombia more, I would definitely work with this program again.

Questions & Answers

Applicants have the opportunity to complete an internship in a wide variety of different industries in Medellín. More information can be found here: https://theinterngroup.com/destination/internships-in-colom… I am also happy to be contacted, as an alumnus of the Colombia programme...

Okay perfect, thank you so much!

Language can be a hurdle. You need to go with the intent of learning Spanish as to communicate better. They really appreciate it. Time is also not as strict, I remember getting to work for 8am as this was the designated start time and I was the only person there, so that is a little bit different. Apart from that, they are very friendly and curious to learn more, so just relax and enjoy!
