Purpose to your life

Participants should know that we are at once God's children; that we honor His creation by being an active and committed part of His bestowal. That His creation is for all of us; that we are blessed and without distinction. Volunteering is a way of acknowledging Gods' greatness, for it demonstrates your human qualities, that humanness and benevolence towards others is your defining characteristic.
Selfness and pridefulness are the defining hallmarks of our United States; we willingly bestow our bounty upon those benighted. less fortunate than ourselves. But, in return, we expect their undying gratitude. So many of us are blissfully ignorant of the socio-cultural normativism of others; if they are perceived as being different from ourselves than are perceived as being less than human; unworthy of our consideration.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
One mandatory requirement for an such endeavor is that of being unprejudicial, that you do not, must not, stand in judgment of others, be it their milieu, nor their essential characteristics; it shall serve only to cloud the experience; you will, there-by, be more of a hindrance to them and to others; and to any that are concomitant; you will leave them with "..a bad taste" for others who follow in your stead. For your actions shall define you as an exemplar, "you have seen one, you have seen all of the others. You should to be a shining example to all others who shall follow in your footsteps.
Pros
  • accomplishment
  • purpose
  • character
Cons
  • lack of commitment
  • lack of clear-sightedness
  • immaturity

Be open, flexible, and bring a warm heart.
Things might not always go as planned and that’s totally okay. This experience is about learning, growing, and going with the flow. You don’t need teaching experience what really matters is that you’re willing to show up, try your best, and care.

Be kind and open with your heart. People will feel it and they’ll respond with love and trust. Especially the kids. They can feel if you’re truly there for them, and they’ll give that love right back through hugs, smiles, and so much joy.

Just be yourself, be present, and let the experience touch you.
And a small tip: if it’s hot season, go for the AC upgrade. It helps a lot!
Pros
  • Very friendly local team and lovely kids
  • You learn a lot about the culture and yourself
  • Private room possible and tasty local food (3 meals a day)
Cons
  • You need to be creative and plan lessons yourself
  • It’s very hot – AC is helpful
  • Simple living conditions, not like at home

Volunteering with IVHQ, a lifetime experience I won't forget

Volunteering in women’s empowerment in Nepal through IVHQ has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.

The women I had the chance to work with were incredibly kind, eager to learn, and full of heart. Their warmth and determination made my time there unforgettable. It’s an experience I’ll carry with me forever, and I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity to connect with such inspiring women.

The IVHQ staff and the local team were both wonderful. They supported me fully at all times, not only with everything related to the project activities, but also with recommendations that helped make my stay in the city much more enjoyable and meaningful. I’m deeply grateful for their care, guidance, and constant support.

What was your funniest moment?
I had the opportunity to wear the Haku Patasi, a traditional Newari dress that is worn by Newari women in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal during significant festivals.
Pros
  • Positive impact in local communities
  • Cultural immersion
  • Improve skills and CV
Cons
  • Time was too short to make a bigger impact
  • Emotional bond that can make it hard and sad to leave

Do It!! You’ll be glad you did!

The weeks before my trip were filled with clear communication and guiding advice, which helped to alleviate my anxiety. From the moment I stepped out of the airport, the local team was there to support me. I was given a safe and comfortable place to stay, and an opportunity to help kids. I felt like I really did make an impact while also growing as a person and learning about other cultures. I made new connections with others who wanted to learn Spanish and who wanted to help. The history, art, architecture, and food of Guatemala were just added bonuses.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
There are a lot of stray dogs in Antigua, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were not underweight and neglected. There are feeding stations set up around the city and the strays are fed by tourists and shop owners. There is even a volunteer program which provides spaying and neutering services to strays!
Pros
  • Beautiful land
  • So much history
  • Food

Volunteering in Tanzania was an incredibly rewarding and transformative experience. The program was well-structured, and the local team provided amazing support every step of the way. I felt truly welcomed into the community and appreciated the chance to contribute meaningfully to the projects. I gained new skills, made lifelong friends, and left with a deeper understanding of the culture. I’m so grateful for the opportunity and would highly recommend it to anyone considering volunteering abroad.

THE experience

I was so so so terrified of taking part in this experience as I knew no one who done it before. IVHQ and the local team in Tanzania were absolutely amazing in making me feel comfortable. I was there for 8 weeks and I could’ve stayed another 8 weeks. It was the best experience of my life. I made the most amazing life long friends. This experience has honestly changed my life. The people and culture are so special. I would highly recommend anyone to take the opportunity to volunteer here because you will absolutely not regret it.

What was your funniest moment?
Honestly the day 7 bees flew into our tuk tuk and screamed the whole place down and everyone around us couldn’t stop laughing while I continued to scream
Pros
  • Meeting people from all around the world
  • Feeling like your truely having a positive impact on the children’s education
  • Creating the most amazing memories

Great support before and during program

The training beforehand was great and helped me when we were in Vietnam. The local team were exceptional in their assistance and support throughout our time there. This trip was an eye opener for us. We loved mixing with the true locals and chatting to them even with the language barrier hindering us a little. It's a great way to see another country but also give back a little to the local community. The tips we got from the other volunteers were invaluable (local knowledge)
We intend on signing up for another IVHQ trip next year.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make the most of the down time, most programs finish around lunchtime/mid afternoon so plan what you want to go see or do or eat. Book things for the weekend. We booked 2 separate day trips for the weekend in the middle of our weeks. It was a bit scary because we didn't know what to expect and the language barrier but it was fantastic. If you are there for an extended amount of time you can usually ask for an extra long weekend to do further afield and visit other parts of the country. The local team are very flexible.
If you are researching, stop and look no further, IVHQ is for you
Pros
  • pre program support
  • On the ground local support
  • WhatsApp group were a god send for on the spot comms
Cons
  • Karaoke night - no not really 😆
  • Ho Chi Min is very very busy and noisy
  • The heat for us was very draining

Volunteering in India - medical program

I had an absolutely amazing time in India volunteering at a slum clinic, as a paediatric nurse, the local team were brilliant with lots of helpful and useful advice. The food at the home stay was delicious and nutritious and IVHQ were great support with answering all my questions and queries before I left, a great pre placement training module, insurance and arranging pick up from the airport. I knew I had support 24/7 and felt completely at ease the whole time I was away without any worries. I would absolutely 100% do another volunteering programme with IVHQ again and definitely go back to India again as I loved it!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Travelling on my own and getting an overnight train. I over came it through the sheer kindness of the Indian people and how friendly and caring they were. It was amazing!
Pros
  • Great place to travel
  • Beautiful culture
  • Amazing sights
Cons
  • Poverty
  • Rubbish
  • Air pollution in some of the cities

Volunteering in Fiji

I had the most enriching and amazing experience on my recent volunteer trip to Fiji. The local team was incredibly supportive and made the accommodation feel like a home away from home. I learnt so much about the local culture and formed meaningful connections with the community. Everyone was so supportive and helpful and I felt like I could really contribute to the program, realising that even small acts can make a big difference. I met so many amazing people, including my fellow volunteers and could not fault the experience one bit.
