What would you improve about this program?
It's quite supportive of volunteers. There really isn't anything I can think of to improve things.
Response from Love Volunteers

Dear Kirsten,
What an amazing volunteer you are! We love having you on the team - and so do the children!
You say "I always feel that I get more than I give" which is what we hope all our volunteers feel about their placements (even though they are probably giving more than they know).
We hope to have you back on-board with us again soon.

Volunteering in Jaipur

India is an amazing and incredible place!
Volunteering at a school in Jaipur was one of the most enriching experiences I have ever had. The kids were great and so enthusiastic and fun! It was truly a most gratifying experiences.
I met some awesome fellow volunteers and I got to explore Jaipur, Agra, Udaipur on my weekends off. The volunteer coordinators were very helpful in making arrangements for us to learn more about India by visiting palaces, museums, markets, etc.
Love Volunteers was very helpful in every way before my trip. It was my second experience with them, and I couldn't have been happier.
All-in-all...it was a great experience, and my only regret is that I couldn't stay longer! I definitely will be back, though.

What would you improve about this program?
I really can't think of anything. Getting to and from India was challenging, but that was because I travelled in winter and there were weather delays, and India has its own way of doing things! Lol! But that's all part of travelling.
Response from Love Volunteers

Hi Kirsten,
How well you sum up the vagaries of travelling in developing areas - and how well you dealt with it - with flexibility and an open-mind.
Thanks for being an awesome volunteer. We hope you manage to get to India again.
All the best,

Life-time experience

To tell the truth, I had some stereotypes about Africa before this trip. But it seemed exciting to go there because everything there is absolutely different from the places I have ever been. I have made a great decision to participate in volunteer program in Mombasa, Kenya.
At the beginning I had some worries about our accommodation, environment, children, schools, etc. i was afraid of being useless there because I am young and not experienced enough. Finally, these concerns turned out to be groundless.
The family became a second home there, they treated us the same way. At school I realized that it is so easy to be important for someone even due to your presence. Every rather small help can turn into great one. Indeed the ocean consists of billions drops, we can make an ocean with each drop. I am endlessly grateful for this opportunity to get such a life-time experience.

Response from Love Volunteers

Hi Helen,
What a fantastic insight into volunteering!
Yes, even a volunteer's presence can be enough to enrich the lives of those in need and the most important 'qualification'a volunteer can have is an open-mind.
We're so pleased your volunteering placement was rewarding for both yourself and the children in Kenya - that's what it's all about!
Take care,

Worth it!

I spent 2 weeks volunteering at an orphanage in Nairobi which unfortunately I did not feel was not enough time to really make a big impact, but even still, it was very eye opening. I recommend spending longer if you can, but if you only have 2 weeks, go for it!

The program was well organized from the pickup from the airport to the ongoing support and phone calls from the staff and I felt surprisingly safe taking the public transportation on my own,

Kenya itself is such an interesting country. If you have never been to Africa, you can expect it to be overwhelming at first, but it is SO worth it. After only 2 weeks I left with a completely changed perspective on life and Africa in general and I cannot wait to come back and spend some more time helping out!

What would you improve about this program?
It felt a bit wrong to form relationships with the children at an orphanage and then leave them 2 weeks later. The kids seemed upset when I left and it almost felt like it would have been better to distance myself more and focus on the bigger picture- maybe this should be encouraged more for the short term volunteers.
Response from Love Volunteers

Hi Petra,
Thanks for the feedback. It's helpful both to prospective volunteers and to us at Love Volunteers.
Yes it is a quandary working to help young children abroad; we desperately want to make a difference in their lives - and the best volunteers are those who will form a bond with the children - but how to avoid disappointment when the volunteer placement ends? This is something we and our local teams in each country give much thought to when we set up and run projects working with children.
Thanks again and we wish you all the best for the future.

Nepal was great! But falsely advertised.

I really enjoyed my experience teaching English in Nepal. The Nepalese coordinators were wonderful and went out of their way to make the experience positive. They helped me to plan sightseeing activities and trips and were very interested in showing me the culture. I had a high level of autonomy, as I road public transportation by myself every day and planned by own free time, but I also experienced a high level of support from the staff. However, Love Volunteers did not paint a clear picture of what I was to expect. They told me that I would be living in a host family, which I found out upon arriving in Nepal was not an option. I would highly recommend the the program with which you work in Nepal as a safe and fulfilling organization; however, the communication between Love and the local program is lacking.

What would you improve about this program?
Love Volunteers needs to solicit more current information from the NGOs it represents. There is too much false advertising on the website and when talking with Kelly and the team.
Response from Love Volunteers

Hi Ellen,
Thanks for the feedback. We're so sorry to hear that we didn't fulfill our goal of fully preparing you with accurate information prior to your placement.
You are right; it's often difficult for us to be as up to date as we'd like with the local conditions in the countries in which we work. The local teams are often dealing with difficult and challenging conditions and volunteers invariable need to be flexible.
It's great to hear that the local team met all your needs when you were there.
All the best and thanks again for helping us to improve our service.

Amazing experience

I have decided to participate in my first international volunteering project and I could not have hoped for a better start than the one I was provided by Love Volunteers organization. I took part in an English teaching project in Albania. Throughout the stay I had a constant support from LV and the project was unbelievably fun and rewarding. Definitely recommend for starting volunteers!

What would you improve about this program?
Might be hard to communicate with people who do not speak English at all.
Response from Love Volunteers

Hi Karolis,
We're so pleased to hear your first volunteering experience was a success.
Thanks for giving your time to the children of Ukraine.

What would you improve about this program?
I think one way the program could be improved would be to have a more in-depth orientation when beginning the program, only because I personally desire knowing as much as possible so I can be as prepared as possible.
Response from Love Volunteers

Hi Sarah,
What an absolute pleasure reading about your wonderful experience volunteering in Honduras. You know it's the great attitude of people like yourself that make their volunteering placements so rewarding for themselves and the local people?
Many of our volunteers are first time travelers and volunteers and it is a massive step to go to an unfamiliar country and stay with the local people. We hope they all have your open-minded, positive attitude.
We would absolutely love to have you back on the team again anywhere in the world!

Really nice country

My participation to this program was 3 weeks long, at the end of Autumn in Cherkasy. Despite a program "baseline" orientated towards help in orphanage, I passed most of my time helping out English teachers in a working-class school. The teaching team was really happy to have a foreigner helping them, as well as the pupils (between 7 and 17 y.o) who, for most, never had the opportunity to speak to one before. Some time in orphanages came on top of that, mostly playing with the kids.

Ukraine is a very nice country I must say, unfairly forgotten by tourists, full of sincerely kind and helpful people, who were really happy to share their culture. I plan to go back as soon as I will be able to, but this time, maybe more as a road trip.

What would you improve about this program?
Looking back, I would see three points of which I had difficulties
- the hard long time earning the trust of the local focal point, and get some idenpendancy or precise tasks from him
- the language : I could not speak Russian or Ukrainian, and almost nobody could speak English fluently
- the fact that I was the only volunteer during my stay.
Response from Love Volunteers

Hi Jerome,
Thanks for taking the time to write this review to help future volunteers. We commend your resilience and flexibility in overcoming language barriers and being on your own on the placement to make a valuable contribution to the teachers and pupils (you even had the initiative and open-mindedness to change programs when this was the best option!).
What a great volunteer!
Thanks again and all the best for your future travels.

Response from Love Volunteers

Dear Vinelle,
Thank you so much for taking the time out of your very limited holidays to give back to the children of Ukraine. You say "All through the program, I have gotten much more than I give." but I very much doubt that is true. It sounds like you were a very valuable team member on the program and your passion to help in the future shows that you will continue to give to this worthy cause.
Thanks again, we commend your commitment to help others.

Rromani Baxt: June 2013

I had a great time overall at Rromani Baxt. Most volunteers arrive later in the summer, so there was only one other volunteer at the time. We shared the volunteer room and got along really well. In the mornings we were working in the kindergarten, helping to maintain order, teach basic English words, and play games with the adorable kids. In the afternoon we hung out with the older kids. The english level is generally very low, but somehow you find a way to communicate without too many mixups. On weekends we explored Tirana or visited nearby cities. There is enough to do outside of volunteering to really stay occupied. The family that runs the centre is lovely, and you will make friends in the neighbourhood. Overall a great experience, and I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in volunteering or learning more about the Roma community.

What would you improve about this program?
Sometimes a bit vague as to what our responsibilities were exactly, so you need to be a self-starter.
Response from Love Volunteers

Hi Isabella,
Great to hear you had a rewarding volunteering experience in Albania.
Volunteers often comment about enjoying the local sites and culture in their spare time and it's fabulous to see that our volunteers are making the most of their time and getting to know the country they are placed in.
All the best for the future. We'd love to have you join us again.
