Translation:
I spent 3 months at Meiji Academy and it was fire!
The courses are very well organized. First of all, the 4 hours of lessons per day (3 hours if there are only 2 of you in your class) are completely sufficient. Just what you need to give you time to enjoy life before or after class. The teachers are different every day. This may not seem as good for follow-up, but over time I appreciated having different working methods. The follow-up is also very well managed. The school reception is attentive and ready to help you as soon as possible. Thanks to them !

In sharehouse it was great! Even if we can sometimes feel a little tight because there were 9 of us in a house without a living room, 1 bathroom and 2 toilets, the kitchen being our only common living space. But despite this, having your own room makes sharing a room very pleasant. I have always had super open-minded, clean and respectful roommates. The house was in an upscale neighborhood, a 35-minute walk from the school. Obviously there was a bus stop right next door. In short, if you like having the choice of having company or not, I recommend the sharehouse!

Very good experience both in the school but also in the city, which has a fairly young population compared to other cities in Japan. I recommend 100%!

Start your Professional Career in Fukuoka

If you want to begin your Japanese language adventure or continue to improve from an advanced level, Meiji Academy is where I recommend. I studied at Kansai Gaidai University online during Covid and never had the in-person experience I was searching for so I found and chose Meiji Academy and I'm glad I did. The staff are very friendly and go above and beyond to accommodate to the student's needs. The teachers and very professional and are very detailed in their explanations, and even personally go one on one with you about topics or areas you need improvement on. If you have questions they are there to help. The housing option I chose was the share house and it was a fun experience and made some nice friends. If a share house experience isn't what you're looking for then they have affordable apartment options as well. I personally studied business etiquette and Keigo which will help myself to succeed in finding long-term employment here in Japan. There were many fun opportunities to meet Japanese students as well! Beginner or advanced level, I highly recommend Meiji Academy and you won't be disappointed!

Pros
  • Accommodating
  • Professional
  • Flexible
Cons
  • Share house is a little small
  • Changes need to be made at least two weeks in advance for scheduling
  • Living abroad is always a struggle!

Other language schools should learn from Meiji Academy

From July 13th to August 5th I've been studying at Meiji Academy located in Fukuoka. Two privates lessons per week and 3 hours per day in class, but it also felt like private lessons because we were 2 students which is nice.

Before joining the school I needed to ask questions regarding scholarship, visa, accomodations etc and the staff was really helpful and quick to respond. I received clear answers in english, wich was really reassuring since I was about to fly on the other side of the planet to meet them.

I've been studying with 3 different teachers and textbook Genki II during my scholarship. The teachers were really kind and competent, with the right amount of friendliness to make it interesting, and the right amount of seriousness because we're here to learn. They had different ways of teaching japanese but they all focused on practicing oral skills and fluency. I've never used Genki textbooks before and I really like it, it's great for learning japanese with other students in a class like this. The teachers also brought there own studying material, like other textbooks, newspaper, culture related articles etc. I only wished I had more homeworks assigned, but instead I prepared the upcoming lesson. Teacher and staff alike were always available to answers any language related questions.

The staff, was very friendly and helpful overall. They gave me good recommendation about places to see, food to taste, things to try. They brought really good insights about japanese culture as well. They also invited me multiple times to go to the onsen and now I'm love with it. Even though I stayed for 1 month, I was able to participate in a language exchange event with another school of japanese people learning english. They organised a beach party which was really fun; ice-breakers, games on the beach, watermelon and all. Good times, I practiced a lot that day.

Also it is worth mentioning that I lived in a homestay selected by Meiji Academy during 1 month. I know this is a review for the school but honestly it was almost the best part. My homestay mother was very kind and helpful in every way imaginable. Sightseeing spots, restaurants, activities ... She is also a japanese teacher in elementary school and helped me with vocabulary and tricky grammar. Also she had an adorable dog.

Here is my review for Meiji Academy. Maybe I should have said something along the line "Go to this school, it's great" but I would rather tell you my story. My language skills improved, I discovered japanese culture and I met people I can call my friends. Every aspect of my scholarship was interesting and entertaining. Never thought I would miss school in my life 😅. Thank you Meiji Academy.

Pros
  • Very friendly and community-driven atmosphere
  • Good learning material and teachers
  • You're not only taught japanese, you're taught how to make the best out of Japan
Cons
  • Classroom might be a bit small if there is too much students

Best of the bunch!

This was not my first time studying at a language school in Japan, but it definitely stands out as one of the best experiences I’ve had so far. There are a lot of ‘cowboy’ language schools that us foreigners unfortunately fall into far too often, but I can say that Meiji is anything but that! The school’s location is very easily reachable and the school feels very welcoming. The teaching staff (as well as all of the other staff) are the highlight of this school! Always beaming and eager to hear about your experiences in Japan. It’s really the perfect environment to learn Japanese.

This is without a doubt a 10/10 language school, I truly hope theres a chance I can return there in the future.

I would recommend these Japanese lessons.

I studied here for 2 months in Fukuoka and the lessons were very good. My teachers was easy to understand and they were always so very patient, even when my Japanese was struggling, and they motivate me to keep on trying. Meiji Academy also arranged for me to have a homestay with a really nice Japanese family, who showed me a lot of the Japanese culture and I was glad as I got to see the real Japanese home life. I made lots of friends in Fukuoka because the people of Kyushu are really kind, and I will continue staying friends with them for a long time, I hope to welcome some of them to Germany some time!

Incredible Japanese School!

I came here with a good friend as we wanted to learn at least the basics of Japanese at the start of our stay in Japan. Meiji taught us everything we needed to know in a very efficient way, no time was wasted and at our request the teachers taught us a lot of useful Japanese that you’d actually use in daily life. For example conversations in a restaurant, in a konbini, at the airport, etc.

We had a lot of fun in Fukuoka, it is really an amazing city that in many ways reminded me of Australia - especially by Momochi beach where everyone is so chill! It’s definitely one of the lesser known spots in Japan so I would recommend it to anybody who’s looking for a more unique experience.

Amazing value for money

For the price we paid, our lessons with Meiji Academy couldn't have been better. Our lessons were taught by native Japanese born and bred in Fukuoka, so not only did they teach us Japanese, but also a lot about their amazing city. The structure of the lessons was easy to follow and meant that it was easy to track our progress, we made a lot of progress!

I guess the whole advantage of doing Japanese lessons in Japan is the fact you get to experience the culture first hand. Outside of our lessons we were able to explore a lot of Fukuoka and the many amazing places in the surrounding Kyushu.

We came with a working holiday visa so our time in Japan has not yet come to an end, but Meiji Academy definitely gave us a good enough introduction to the language to make our stay here a lot more enjoyable.

Great time learning in a tourist-free Japan

My time with Meiji Academy is unfortunately coming to an end this week. It’s been an amazing 2 months, and I’ve learnt a lot during my time here. Meiji not only taught me Japanese in a fun and efficient way, but they also introduced their amazing city to me. Fukuoka is such an underrated place (even better with no tourists), I’d seen all the reviews raving about Fukuoka but now I know for myself :)

The structure of the course was excellent, it is clear to me that they tailor their teaching style to their students as we had a thorough discussion about my goals with Japanese before we started and they taught me accordingly. We worked through a textbook at a suitable pace, which was useful as I could easily track my progress. The teachers are really enthusiastic about Japanese, and are always really motivating and happy to see you progress.

I would definitely recommend Meiji Academy for anybody learning Japanese!

Authentic Japanese Experience

I studied with Meiji at their school in Fukuoka and I had an amazing time! The staff are all so kind and helpful, they really make you feel at home even though you’re on another side of the globe. The lessons were well-taught, and I ultimately gained a lot of confidence with the language. The benefit of actually being in Japan when studying is that the practice never stops! After classes I would go out and use what I’d learnt in real scenarios, which is actually fun once you get over that first initial barrier of fear. If you’re looking for a real authentic Japanese experience, give Tokyo a miss and head for Fukuoka! The people here are so down-to-earth and easy-going, just being here every day makes you feel at ease. Plus, the city really has everything you need - beaches, shopping, city life, food, easy transport etc. etc. It's a super liveable city. Be wary of the climate though! Kyushu summers are famous for being hell on earth, you’ll have to quickly get used to being drenched in sweat 24/7.
