Learning about Japanese traditional culture in Fukuoka

The school staff is so nice, always available and ready to help, I immediately felt at home. The classes are efficient and fun and the professors are qualified. it was always a pleasure to talk with them even after the class ended. Basically, everything was organized by the school, the trips, the schedules, the apartment... I just had to go there, study and enjoy Japan :-) I got to know the Japanese culture and history and made very good friends. My apartment was in a very nice location. Even though most of the students chose the sharehouse, I was able to make tons of friends and spend most of my time with them! I would definitely go back if I had the chance! I really had a great time studying Japanese and exploring its culture with my new friends.

Fantastic stay with Meiji

My Japanese proficiency improved every day. The teachers were exceptional. They were patient with us, always smiling and sincerely cared about our progress in Japanese. I loved how they explained some cultural things about Japan to us, I learned many things thanks to them and not only about Japanese language but Japanese culture and habits. I felt more and more confident with my language skills and enjoyed a lot the everyday interactions with the local people.

I had a great time with the other students in the school, especially during our karaoke parties after school!

We had a great living situation and the sharehouse was located in a nice area with many shops and restaurant options.

This experience exceeded all of my expectations and I can't wait to visit Japan again.

My second time and still brilliant

It was my second time studying at Meiji Academy. I went there two years ago and I loved it so much that I decided to apply again for a different course. My experience had been fantastic both times. This time, my Japanese level was already quite advanced, so I had a blast visiting Fukuoka with new eyes. We were three students in my group classes and we were all three motivated to improve our skills at most! Also, I decided to try the business course; I went for the standard course the first time. I learnt lots of interesting things and we practiced keigo which was really stimulating. I particularly like the social environment at Meiji Academy because it is easy to meet new people and make Japanese friends. I hope I will have the chance to come to Meiji again in the future and study with them again... and again!!

I miss Japan and I miss my friends

The course I chose was called "Intensive Japanese Course". I wanted to face a new challenge and learn Japanese, if possible in Japan directly. I read that Meiji Academy was an amazing school so I chose them. I can confirm that it is a wonderful school and that you won't regret taking part in their programs !
We had amazing teachers. They were very clear and easy to understand while and teaching us Japanese. The staff was friendly and helpful in many ways explaining how the use transportation, providing good accommodation and holding fun activities. It was so pleasant to be surrounded by open minded people from different backgrounds. We all became friends and I miss them so much.
I definitely recommend this program for anyone wanting to learn Japanese in Japan ! I am coming back as soon as possible !

Study Japanese the right way~

This a great program to completely immerse yourself in the studies and Japan's culture, landscape and beautiful summer. I had a very fun international group of friends with whom I went to some group trips to visit the region. It was a truly unique experience thanks to the nice staff who was organizing the activities and the teachers who were exceptional. There were small class sizes and lessons for every level: beginner, advanced or business. I did an intensive course for 4 weeks. After a month, I was thinking and dreaming Japanese! It was already months ago, but I will never forget this amazing experience. Chilling on the beach thinking "Yes, I am in Japan right now" was just the best feeling ever. Really good Japanese vibes! ;)

A great school located in Fukuoka's downtown

Taking part in this program was a unique experience and a fantastic opportunity to travel to Japan and learn Japanese efficiently. Meiji Academy was helpful, friendly and cheering. I learned and experienced a lot about Japanese language and culture. The classes were truly high-quality thanks to the professors who were very invested in our improvement. Studying alongside other motivated international students was great. We are still in contact with my friends from Meiji and I was so pleased to spend time and to study with them. I tried to take advantage of every situation to practice my Japanese and use what we learned at school and it was an effective technique. It was also a good way to meet Japanese people and make friends. The city is not as huge as Tokyo, but Fukuoka is still a big city with many cool spots and stores. I will miss so much all the delicious meals I had at restaurants and the laughter with my friends.

6 months learning Japanese with Meiji Academy

I decided to study 6 months with Meiji Academy and it was definitely one of the best experiences of my life! The teachers and staff were so friendly and sweet that I felt comfortable straight away with everyone. When I first started I could barely understand a sentence in Japanese and now I can communicate with locals and have made a ton of Japanese friends. I took a separate Kanji class alongside the normal course, which I really recommend as reading is so difficult especially when you’re trying to get around the city or order from restaurants. Being able to understand even the most basic of kanji made everyday life here in Fukuoka so much easier.

For my first month I stayed with a host family and then moved into the sharehouse for my other 5 months. I can’t thank my host family enough for helping me quickly get accustomed to life in Fukuoka and boosting my Japanese from the start. It was a once in a lifetime experience and although it’s a little pricier than the other accommodation options, it’s definitely worth it!

We followed the textbooks Genki I & II and Chuukyuu e ikou, which got me from an N5 level to around an N4/N3 for the JLPT. Although some of the teacher’s English was a bit difficult to understand in the start, the classes were easy to follow and really fun. The school also organised a lot of events, such as Tea ceremonies, Okonomiyaki, Nabe, and Takoyaki parties, trips to festivals, etc. I loved all of it and, as a bonus, got to learn so much about Japanese culture and way of life. I would 100% come back to study with Meiji Academy if I get the chance!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Motsunabe!! I’d never tried intestine before and honestly was a bit put off when I heard what it was. However after trying it I can say it’s delicious and part of the Fukuoka experience :)

Improvement beyond expectation

I always knew I would learn Japanese someday. I dreamed of traveling to Japan ever since middle school and I finally realised my dream! I started taking some Japanese classes at uni, but it wasn't enough and I wasn't improving that much. With Meiji Academy, I really liked the private classes they offered. Even the group classes were only with three or four other students. It was way more efficient that my Japanese lessons at uni with more than 20 people! I found this school thanks to the Facebook page of my university because some other students took part in this programme before. It was a really good choice. I had a blast with those fantastic humans at Meiji Academy and my Japanese improved so much! Fukuoka is a brilliant place located on Kyushu. My best memory is the strawberry picking that the school organised. Strawberries are famous in Fukuoka and it was so yummy!!

Brilliant program

Even though I have been studying Japanese on my own for 2 years, I made much more progress by going to meiji academy for 2 months. I realized that I needed some kind of regularity that I wasn't able to get when studying alone. The teachers were nice and qualified, and I got along with them quickly. The staff of the school is also absolutely incredible. They made me feel comfortable from the beginning and they were always there to help when needed. I made friends who live in different places, on the other side of the world, and all those encounters permitted me to stay motivated and myself a new home.

I really love Japanese history and traditional culture so I chose the traditional culture course. It was very fun and interesting, we had many cool activities outside the school like some kinds of field trips. The meeting with a geisha was probably the most amazing activity.

Fukuoka 2020

Traveling to Fukuoka was a lot of fun. It was a very productive time for me. I achieved my goals while traveling, gaining confidence in Japanese and meeting fantastic people. It was reassuring to know that the staff was available at any time in case we had any problem. I had a little Japanese test to know which class I should attend and I was placed with two other students. The classes were always fun and interactive. I had a great time with the professors and my friends. I also had private classes that were the best chances to focus on my weaknesses.
I was looking for an authentic experience, far from the touristic and expansive Tokyo. I am more than satisfied with the experience I had! Fukuoka has a really unique atmosphere with all the street restaurants along the streets and the river in Hakata that pop up at night.
