Travelling to Cambodia

This was my first time travelling to an Asian country and the TEFL course has given me the opportunity to do this while also providing me with the support structure of becoming an English teacher, the TEFL Cambodia team has been very helpful and informative with the whole process of getting here and with all the topics covered throughout the course. I would like to give a huge thank you to Tina, Dylan, Chy and Willie for all their support and warm hospitality and I have been able to learn from all of them.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
A frog...never did I think that I would eat a frog in my life, but I believe you should always travel with an open mind and experience the culture.

Best time of my life!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I arrived but almost immediately I felt completely comfortable. The information we were given in class will help so much for the rest of my teaching days! The practicals were a daunting experience at first but we all quickly grew more comfortable towards the end and then even began to enjoy it! Outside of the class, the culture tour and trip to angkor wat and other temples was unforgettable! Our guide, chy, has a vast knowledge about the history and culture of Cambodia and made it an even more enjoyable experience!

What was your funniest moment?
Embarrassing myself on the first day of the practicals!
Response from Destination TEFL

Thank you Fionn for your lovely review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed both the course, as well as the out of class activities and cultural experiences.
Best of luck with your new TEFL career and stay in touch.

In covid times, choosing to complete the course was one of the best decisions I could have made! Follow suit!

I was originally recommended to look into Destination TEFL in order to gain practical training following completion of another TEFL course online. I saw that the 140-onsite course offered in Cambodia had very strong reviews and was excited to find out more about the course. After reaching out to Willie (Operations Director in Cambodia) via a video call in Jan 2021, it became obvious that this was the right choice for me. I am so glad that I chose Destination TEFL and highly recommend the course and company to anyone looking for a comprehensive and challenging, yet fun experience.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Not me, but one of my coursemates - chicken penis soup in the quarantine hotel in Phnom penh.

Great experience

The course was great! I learned a lot about efficient techniques to teach. Specially the procedure of planning the lessons became easy and clear. Now it’s much more easy to create effective activities and games for kids and make the classes more fun , engaging and effective! Our teacher Tina was great! I learned a lot of new activities during games. Also I learned about discipline! She gave all information in easy way and made the classes always engaging!!!
Thank you so much for this amazing opportunity!)

What was your funniest moment?
That was a Hindi class!) we were just the same as our students ))

Amazing course

My experience was unique because my dream came true .
I really enjoyed every moment .
I can’t wait to start to practice it.
To get more knowledge, skills just make more exciting to teach.
To understand more about education.
To teach kids and adults are almost the same way to teach . I just need to put in practice what I have learned.
The course was super intensive. No time to do anything else . But it was super super satisfactory to help me in future career.
Just wanna say thank you so much all .

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Back to my country to practice everything that I have learned
Response from Destination TEFL

What an adventure you have signed up for! Let’s get ready...

What to pack:
A readiness to learn new things in new ways. Yep, you may know a “better way,” but that’s not why you are here.
Thick skin. Daily you will be evaluated by your peers and instructor.
Your favorite writing utensil and refills. You will be doing a lot a writing—notes, your thoughts, lesson plans.
A working computer. Without it it you will be very unhappy.
An ability to budget your time, energy, and resources to complete multiple, simultaneous projects.
A strong immune system. Long hours, new challenges, and kids can tax your immune system. Bolster yourself in advance. Bring a month’s supply of your favorite supplements.
At least one set of PROPER teaching clothes.
Your swimsuit. The pool is lovely.

Leave at home:
All extra responsibilities. You will not have the time, energy, or mental space to successfully do anything else. There is not a set daily schedule for the entire month. Now is the time to take a leave of absence from everything else. REALLY!

Do your research in advance:
All work and no play...makes for crabby teachers. While you will be terrifically busy with classroom responsibilities, you will want to make time to be a tourist. When you have unexpected free time, you will want to use it doing the cool things you planned ahead for—-not just starting your search.
Join some of the Siem Reap Facebook groups (expats, foodies, etc.) and identify some places you would like to patronize.
Search the web for “things to do in Siem Reap” and create a wish list—or a reward list.
Google Maps is your friend. Create a “list” and save the places you find through your research.

Plan to contribute to the local economy
In an area hugely dependent on tourism, the people of Siem Reap have been hard hit by the fallout of COVID-19.
Buy the 7-day Pass for Angkor Wat (it is valid for a whole month).
Find a business or cause to support (e.g., Drivers Srey: Woman Tuk Tuk Drivers, Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity, GIVE Kefir).
Go the the smaller book stores (office supply stores) for fun stuff to add to your classes.
(Please note: unless you have been in the country for at least 3 months, be careful with street food. Now is not the time to deal with digestive problems.)

Plan to have a great time!

What was your funniest moment?
Learning that Champa’s cat regularly ate her homework!
Response from Destination TEFL

Hi Jessica

Enjoyable, but hard work.

Very hard work with a lot of pressure at times. Support from peers and trainer is good, so is a great help. Beautiful hotel and centre, so leads to a wonderful learning environment.
The kids in the teacher practicals are an absolute delight and were engaged throughout.
Course content is vast, but taught in a way that you pick it up quickly.
Lots of homework means that social life takes a battering for the duration of the course. So, now I reckon it's time to have a party to celebrate!!
👍👍👍👍😊😊😊😊😊

What was your funniest moment?
The cat walking in to the classroom in the middle of a lesson.
Response from Destination TEFL

Great Course! Great Value! Great Instructor! Great experience!

Today is my last day of the course and I feel that I received more than my money’s worth with Destination TEFL Bali. The material is very informative and the instructor was one of the best I’ve had in any course from grade school through University. The course was very fun and I made some new friends as well. I feel very confident in my skills going into my first English teaching job. Thanks Destination TEFL Bali!.....................................................................................

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

Destination TEFL Bali

I took the Destination TEFL virtual course (via Zoom Application) in November 2020. After deciding to take my TEFL this year, I wasn’t sure whether it was better for me to take one of the cheap online courses or pay more for an “in class” course. After taking this course, it’s safe to say that it was well worth the money. This course did an excellent job preparing me to step into the classroom as an English teacher, create lesson plans, and keep students engaged. The course also did a great job preparing me to search for a job either in person or online. The owner/teacher Matt is absolutely fantastic and I can’t recommend this course enough.

Response from Destination TEFL

Thank you Robert for your lovely review of our virtual course that was held via our Bali training centre. Perhaps one day you will be able to visit the centre in person in Bali, now that travel there is possible!
Kind regards

Virtual Online TEFL Course

This really is a great course indeed. I have gained so much knowledge regarding what it entails to be an ESL teacher. The real life experience attained has been amazing. Great support received from everyone. The facilitators were amazing and so supportive. I have truly been inspired by their passion and enthusiasm.

It was not an easy course at all. Hark work was required to successfully complete the course.

The class dynamic was great. Everyone really supported each other. I have had an amazing learning journey and would highly recommend this course to anyone interested.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The first listening and PPP lesson.
I prepared well to ensure that all flowed according to my plan. Feedback received was great to improve for future purpose.
