Review Atlantis Program

My experience with the Atlantis program was life-changing. Not only was I able to shadow doctors in different medical specialties, but I became familiar with how the European healthcare system works and how it differs between the United States healthcare system. The staff were very friendly and patient with me and ensured that everything went smoothly. I highly recommend Atlantis to anyone seeking out a career in the medical professor to help determine if this is an appropriate career for them.

Viana Do Castelo

I did the three weeks in Viana Do Castelo and it was so much fun! We got to shadow doctors in the pediatric, surgery, and neurology department. I learned a lot about the field that I want to work in (neurology). Our group got close very quickly and we are now abroad besties!

Our city manager was the sweetest and she was always there to help us. She made sure we had enough food and experience. The group dinners and extracurriculars on the weekend were always fun and engaging.

Portugal is so beautiful!! We also got to travel on the weekend and explore new places. If you want to learn more about the medical field abroad and make new friends, I recommend!

Meeting one of the pioneers in Healthcare

During my first week in Mantova, Italy, I had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Massimo. In the Carlo Poma Hospital, Dr. Massimo is the director of immunohematology. During the second day I was there, he gave us a presentation on the research he did with a university in the United States. In the presentation, I learned that, because of the research he did, plasma was used as a form of therapy against Covid-19. Although I originally believed that Mantova was such a small city in Italy, I now understand that this small city housed one of the many pioneers that brought a huge impact to healthcare and medicine.

Lifelong Memories

I experienced amazing things in the hospital. Staff is so wonderful, I saw so much and more than expected. I learned an incredible amount about Cape Verde and medicine in general. Besides the shadowing, the experiences from the island and the activities we did taught me the rich history of a country I didn’t know existed. On those journeys and in housing, I also made lifelong friends. They are people I still talk to, including the city manager. Atlantis staff and the locals loved having us come and wanting to learn about their country. It’s definitely somewhere I will be visiting again.

Great Medical trip in Greece!

Very lovely experience in Athens, Greece. Shadowed Doctors in various specialties including Anesthesia, Surgery, Radiology, Pathology, and ED. The doctors in Athens General Hospital were very accommodating and even took the students and I to coffee during one of our breaks in between surgeries. The pace in Greece is obviously a lot different in their hospitals compared to US. During the trip, our city coordinator took us to the beach, and on a city tour of the capital, Athens. Truly blown away by the experience and could not recommend any other program for a study abroad program in Europe for a pre med student.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be adventurous in your host country, travel on the weekend with your friends in the program, and be willing to try new foods and cultural experiences. Your time is limited so maximizing it was the best thing possible. I got to go on a local boat tour around the islands one weekend and the next we flew to Mykonos for a long weekend.
Pros
  • Great Hospitality
  • Excellent medical experiences
  • great connections
Cons
  • Didn't know specialities that I was shadowing till I arrived

Amazing Shadowing Opportunity!

The Atlantis program was very fun and a great opportunity to shadow doctors, explore a new country, and experience a vibrant culture. The day I arrived I was greeted by the Lead City Manager who helped get a taxi to take me and two others to housing. The managers provided food and ingredients for breakfast every week and were very helpful with any of our needs. We had two dinners a week and an excursion with lunch on weekends. The program is not only a great opportunity to shadow and build your Pre-Med resume but also a wonderful and fun experience.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Charcuterie board!
Pros
  • Lots of shadowing hours
  • Time to explore
  • Make connections
Cons

Review

Atlantis is an amazing program and is a unique way to gain hands on experience while traveling abroad. I met an amazing group of people that shared the same interest with me, while also being able to have fun and explore a new country together. This program allows you to experience healthcare in a new light and exemplifies the cultural differences between difference countries and ways of practice. Not only do you get to explore the city you are based in, this program allows you to travel to surrounding cities and countries and immerse yourself in their culture.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take the step and do it! I was nervous with traveling to a new country I have never been to while also being hnfamiliar with the language. Everyone is extremely nice and helpful and you will meet amazing people along the way.
Pros

Genoa, Italy

I was a part of the Genoa, Italy program in May 2024. The three weeks I spent there were some of the best of my life. Not only was I able to learn so much about the medical field and different medical specialties that will be useful in the future, but I also learned so much about the culture in Genoa. I loved how every week I was able to shadow in a new specialty because I was able to learn so many new things every week. I also loved how the program included group excursions so that I could build relationships with other students in the program. Overall, this experience was so transformative and I would definite recommend it to anyone interested!

Atlantis Spain

It was a fun way to travel on your own, but still have people in your group. It’s a great to beginning traveling as a young person. You get the chance to make a bunch of great friends, try new foods, and see new things. You get to shadow different units of a hospital, and can choose to visit a country in a different language and try to hone your skills. You get an outside view of different healthcares and how people live in different countries and cultures. You get to live with others so you won’t be on your own either. So it’s a lot less scary.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Flying to a different country on my own and then taking a bus to get to my destination.
Pros
  • Shadowing experience
  • Made new friends
  • Traveling
Cons
  • Expensive

Bologna Summer 24

The program is awesome! I definitely do recommend it as a fun and educational way to experience another country's health system! I personally took advantage of my time in the hospitals and took notes on what I saw and what was different from the US heathcare system. I learned alot about myself and others while I was in Italy too. I think the best part easily had to be exploring other cities in Italy. I was in an apartment with five other girls and we visited other cities every weekend we were there.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Just dont forget to have fun and learn as much as you can.
Pros
  • Shadowing hours
  • Meeting new people
  • Exploring new places
Cons
  • Cost
  • Being somewhere unfamiliar
  • Living with people you dont know at first
