Wonderful

I had the best time learning from various doctors in the hospital. I was able to ask so many questions and see lots of procedures and surgeries up close! I enjoyed my free time exploring the city and learning about the culture. Everyone who was on the trip was great and we made good friendships!! By the end of the trip we were so close and found ourselves exploring more and more areas of the city. We even started picking up a lot of the basics of the language and were able to communicate well!!!

What was your funniest moment?
I had a funny moment when I was passing a local on the streets with my friends from the group. I found myself speaking english but with a spanish accent, everyone laughed about it, you really do pick up the language!
Pros
  • exposure to procedures
  • group bonding
  • cultural
Cons
  • little sleep

Review of Atlantis Pre Health Program in Athens, Greece

During my experience in Greece, we shadowed doctors in a local Athens hospital. I was able to observe a variety of different surgeries and procedures. In our free time we were allowed to explore the city of Athens and even island hop to any surrounding island or anywhere we had the time to go to. I made life long friendships with people I did not even know before the program and my experience was amazing. I would recommend going abroad over and over again, it was so much fun and I am so happy I decided to do it.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My most nerve-racking moment is when other Atlantis program members and I decided to go bungee jumping off of a bridge over the ocean. I was so scared, but thought if I went first it would make it easier, which I did. It was so much fun and I would 100% do it again.
Pros
  • Making life long friendships with people from all around America.
  • Learning more about different surgical specialities and getting to watch a variety of procedures.
  • Exploring the city of Athens freely and many other surrounding islands.
Cons
  • Not staying for longer.

Atlantis Pre-Health Study Abroad

Atlantis gave me a life-changing opportunity. As a pre-med student, I really thought it was going to be impossible for me to study abroad, given the rigorous course loads that accompany most pre-med majors. However, Atlantis provided me with an experience that challenged me, allowed me to immerse myself in a new culture while studying medicine, discover the beauty and uniqueness of an entirely different healthcare system, and make amazing connections with people my age as well as medical professionals. I will be forever grateful to Atlantis for my abroad experience, and would love to share how amazing it was with curious and similar-minded students who are searching for a transformative and unparalleled experience.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
The most unfamiliar thing I ate was pig intestines! We went on an excursion to Spoleto, Italy, and went to a nice restaurant where I was able to try this!
Pros
  • Shadowing doctors across many hospital departments
  • Meeting so many new people
  • Exploring small nearby towns

Budapest Shadowing

I really enjoyed shadowing in Budapest over the summer through the Atlantis pre med program. I learned a lot at the hospital I went to and became friends with all of the doctors. Some gave me letters of recommendation and some I am still in contact with. Also it was cool to see how healthcare is done in another country other than America where I live. There were a lot of cool differences. It was also cool to do excursions on our trip like taking a boat on a lake and eating at nice restaurants. This trip was the best moments of my life up to this point and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is thinking of going to become a doctor as it teaches you a lot about what it is like to be a doctor and you get to have fun doing it.

What was your funniest moment?
I got to go kayaking and I fell out of my boat for a moment but I was ok but it was funny because I was looking at my phone so of course it was my fault luckily my phone didn't fall in the water.
Pros
  • Site seeing
  • Getting to interact with real doctors
  • Making new friends (life long friends in my case) who also want to be in the medical field
Cons
  • some things cost a lot of money if you want to go do something outside the group like taking a hot air ballon
  • Lots of traffic if you take a taxi although the transportation system was amazing if you take a tram or bus or train
  • Have to be up early to go to the hospital on weekdays although I enjoyed this however my roommate didn't always

3 Week Medical Shadowing in Lisbon - Review

Over the summer, I participated in the Atlantis shadowing program in Lisbon, and I loved it! I got the chance to interact with many different medical providers which allowed me to get first-hand perspectives on what it is like to work in the medical field. One thing that pleasantly surprised me was the fact that I was not only able to interact with physicians, but I also got to interact with other professionals such as nurses, which also offer a unique perspective on the field. It was very interesting to observe how the medical system works in Portugal, as it opened my eyes to how medicine differs and is similar around the world. Additionally, I loved getting the opportunity to learn more about what life is like in Portugal. Personally, I enjoyed being able to live life as people typically do in Lisbon, such as being able to walk everywhere and take public transportation. I loved learning about the Portuguese culture, especially through my amazing city managers! Overall, this experience was incredible and allowed me to learn more about medicine while simultaneously learning more about a culture different to my own.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
We got to go stand-up paddle boarding in Cascais, which was super fun and cool!
Pros
  • You get to have a bit of a taste of what it would be like to live as a local in that city
  • You got a lot of really cool exposure into various medical procedures and cases
Cons
  • Sometimes certain doctors don't give a lot of attention to you, so you may not understand what is going on.
  • Some doctors don't know you are supposed to be there, so they may get frustrated until they understand

I loved it

This experience was amazing. I finally got to travel on my own which I was nervous about but Atlantis made it very easy to navigate. I had so much fun, I got to learn so many new things from both the medical side and personal side. I got to experience a different culture and try so many new foods. I loved that we didn’t have to stay at the program location on the weekends and we could travel outside as well, we ended up going to madrid and portugal. I also made some great new friends and we still talk to this day.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice would be to just have fun and go out as much as you can and experience the city because it is amazing.
Pros
  • Traveling outside of program destination
  • Meeting new people
  • Trying new foods

Atlantis Italy experience

Italy was a wonderful country with many beautiful experiences. I learned a lot during the shadowing and more about Italian healthcare which is very different from in the US. The Atlantis staff was amazing and the housing was very nice. The area where we stayed was a popular tourist are and made it very easy to navigate the language and culture barrier. The hospital staff was kind for the most part and helpful. The excursions were fun and included cultural elements to learn more about Italy's history not just of Rome but pre-Rome as well. I also enjoyed the dinner options which were very thoughtful and delicious.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I saw almost all of a man's teeth get extracted and have part of his upper mandible removed for a tumor removal all while he was awake. He was also only numbed with a local which was quite shocking.
Pros
  • Great staff with thoughtful provision of the excursions and meals
  • Prime location for housing
  • Amazing culture and experiences to explore
Cons
  • Sometimes difficult to navigate language barrier
  • Healthcare knowledge learned here would not help in an American healthcare system except for general medical science.

Shadowing in Croatia

Shadowing in Croatia is like no other shadowing you will ever do. The hospitals are filled with so much history and with surgeons that know so much and are always willing to share their knowledge with you. Everyone is really nice and apart from the shadowing the best part of my trip was to walk alone through the city and do some souvenir shopping. I really recommend doing a solo trip that’s going to benefit you in your academic life but also that provides you with enough personal time so that you can make the most of your time there also.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Our city manager took us to some old ruins of a castle in Samobor, Croatia. Apart from the spectacular view the castle provides you it also has an interesting story. On one of the firsts movies Jackie Chan has ever made he fell and cracked his head open in this particular castle. Not only that but he was also taken care of and operated in the hospital I was shadowing in.
Pros
  • Helps you build your resume
  • You gain new friends
  • You get to know and explore a new place
Cons
  • It's quite pricey so you have to have enough money for it
  • You may be a little lost with the native language

Atlantis- Venice program

It was an amazing experience to be able to study abroad and also learn about my passion for medicine. Atlantis gave me the opportunity that I would never have to go over seas and see new culture especially concerning the medical field. Venice was an amazing city and provided me with many experiences I would never have been able to gain in the states. There is much to learn and it will also help diversify yourself and your resume. I highly recommend to anyone that is considering going through Altantis to study abroad.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Do your research and have familiarity with culture

Great experience

This trip was one of the best things I’ve done for both my personal and professional life. It allowed me to both gain shadowing hours and learn from respected healthcare professionals in a different country. There was plenty of time to explore as well when not at the hospital. Group dinners and excursions were great ways to get to know people on the trip and see more of the country. I didn’t know anyone before going on this trip which was very nerve wracking, but I left with some lifelong friends!
