Burgos, Spain - Pre-Health Shadowing

I would say that my experience was unique because we had exposure to diverse medical cases! Shadowing doctors provided a first-hand experience that would be really hard to find here in the States. The patient interaction was also top tier, you were not only communicating with them patient to pre-health shadower but also working and practicing on your Spanish, which leads to unforgettable moments and something you can take back home!
I would definitely recommend this to anyone pre-med wanting to travel!

Pros
  • Beautiful Architecture
  • Welcoming Community
  • First-Hand Shadowing experience
Cons
  • Transportation to site
  • Lots of out of pocket spending
  • If your wanting to travel else where in europe, it was 2 hours away to the nearest international airport

Hospital site

Joining atlantis was one of the best decision I made. That did not just prepare me for my pre-med but helped me to socialize more, connect with professional people to whom I am connected with. They explained so well even though of language barrier. Despite of never visting greece I made a lot of new friends which will have special place and they will be forever. We were all from different backgrounds. Some downfall for me was jsut the housing as we had to share with 4 people of the group but that did not seem a problem later on for me as we got along.

Pros
  • Social more
  • gain professional strength
  • know the culture how they work
Cons
  • Homesicknesses
  • feeling we are behind than other students

Shadowing in Pavia, Italy (Lombardy Region)

This experience was the most life-changing and breath-taking moment of my undergraduate career. I was able to shadow so many professions around the Operating Room and various departments (like Urology, Neurology, and Pediatrics).
Outside of the hospital experience, I had so much free time to explore the city, eat quality italian food, and hangout with my cohort everyday!
The best parts were the weekly excursions and the freetime weekends we used to travel. I got to see so many beautiful sides of Italy.

Pros
  • Quality Food
  • Well kept rooms
  • Traveling to many beautiful cities
Cons
  • Be prepared for humid rooms
  • A lot of walking
  • Italians love to smoke Cigarettes (as with europeans in general)

Atlantis Milan, Italy

I enjoyed shadowing doctors in different specialties, as it diversified my experience. I was able to get a feel of the specialties I may be interested in pursuing. Furthermore, the doctors were very open and passionate about their work- they were happy to share information regarding medical conditions and their research. Doctors, radiologists, and medical physicists discussed treatment options, diagnoses, and prognosis with us. I felt comfortable asking questions in an environment which fostered learning.

Pros
  • I learned a lot about various cancer treatments.
  • There were 2 students assigned to each doctor.
  • We had weekends off to travel and explore the city.
Cons
  • The language barrier during shadowing.

The city that we stayed in was beautiful and the shadowing was a great experience. I was able to observe many different rotation, including a full week of surgery. We also went out on weekly excursions that showed you beautiful destination on Italy. We went to Lake Como and Camogli while our hosts showed us all the best spots to eat and sight see. The trip to Pavia, Italy was nothing short of amazing! I felt like the city was a great pick as it was not a tourist city so we got to enjoy the true Italian experience while exploring so much. The shadowing was amazing because I learned a lot and made connections with the doctors. I will always remember this trip and it will be used to maximize my knowledge in healthcare. I can’t wait to write about my trip in grad school applications because it is such a monumental part of my journey now. Ciao for now!

Haley’s Experience

I really enjoyed getting to know my peers and the excursions allowed me to learn about Portugal in ways I probably would not have otherwise! Shadowing in hospitals allowed me to be in places like the OR that I would not have had the privilege to see as an undergraduate student. I am grateful to have been apart of a smaller group of students as well because I feel as though the site managers got to know us on a personal level and we have shared lasting memories with them. I plan to continue the connections I’ve made.

Pros
  • Peers
  • Excursions
  • Food
Cons
  • Language Barrier

DO IT!!

At first I was a bit hesitant on this program, thinking it was too good to be true. But the more I got to know and the information provided by the Atlantis Team, the more eager I was to sign up. I’m so glad I decided to take this journey to another country to shadow. I work in a hospital so I have shadowing experience but this was nothing compared to what I experienced through the Atlantis program. I learned so much new knowledge that I never would’ve learned if I didn’t decide to go on this trip.

Pros
  • Shadowing experience
  • Pre-med

Pavia

Our city manager was extremely qualified and helpful. All of the Atlantis planned meals and excursions were even better than I expected and really helped us embrace the culture while also being very fun! The shadowing experience was really interesting for me because it was quite different than shadowing I have been apart of in the US. It was extremely fascinating to see the differences in health care systems, and I was able to see many cool procedures that it would have been much harder to in the US.

An Incredible Opportunity

Getting to shadow doctors in different departments was amazing. I learned so much and got to meet some incredible people. The program staff is so kind and helpful, always available and supportive. We stayed in a really nice building in beautiful apartments, and I really felt that I got to experience the daily life of Zaragoza citizens. Our excursions were so fun and educational, and the three weeks of the program seemed to fly by. Our group dinners were delicious and always offered us a different type of cuisine, enhancing our knowledge and experience.
