Venice

I enjoyed my experience with Atlantis in Venice, Italy because I was a recent graduate from college wanting more experience in the medical field before going to graduate school. I had also never been out of the United States so I was able to get a cultural experience as well. There was never a dull day through my program. I was happy to wake up every morning and see more of Venice each day. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone interested in the medical field and wanting the unique experience of being abroad!

Atlantis in Italy

My shadowing experience in Italy was an experience I could’ve never imagined. I was able to gain ambiguity when it comes to analyzing similarities and differences in healthcare between the United States and a foreign country. Additionally, I was also able to experience a culture that I was very unfamiliar with, but was able to get accustomed to with my day-to-day experiences. Overall, I would recommend this program to anybody because of the long lasting friendships I developed from people who were once strangers, and because of the confirmation that this trip gives into whether or not pursuing healthcare is the career path for you.

Atlantis Shadow Abroad

This experience was something I believe everyone should participate in. It was not only educational but also fun and interesting. I learned a lot in the hospital and from the doctors along with being able to travel with friends. We would spend a few hours a day learning from the hospital staff and then had free time to do whatever we wanted in the city or anywhere else. It was truly something I feel like others should look into and consider doing, it's different from life in America and it's so great seeing the culture in other countries.

Mestre, Italy

My time in Mestre was great! The hospital in Mestre is a great place for shadowing, there were many surgeries and lots of helpful doctors and staff. Another benefit was having a city manager that helped our group get everything in order for our stay. He also helped us find fun things to do and took us on excursions, we got to see beautiful historic sites and we even went river rafting. I would recommend the Atlantis sharpening experience to anyone looking to gain meaningful clinical shadowing as well as an experience abroad.

Zagreb, Croatia 3 Week Summer Program

This is a great program to jumpstart shadowing hours for aspiring medical professionals. Atlantis offers a wide range of specialties to observe while immersing oneself in Croatian culture. There was lots of time for shadowing, and it was overall well-organized. I had plenty of time to explore Zagreb, which was also a big bonus. I loved how we were in a city with many things to do but also had the option to travel on the weekends and program excursions. My City Manager was amazing; he gave us many great recommendations for travel, food, and relaxation.

Coimbra 2024

It was my first time going overseas and traveling by myself. As soon as I land into the airport, city manager was there to greet me and help me get on my shuttle for the two hour trip north. The first day I got thrown into open-heart surgery, which was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. And having the rest of the day off to do whatever and explore the city was awesome. I was able to go see a bunch of Roman artifacts from museums and national sites, the people were great and the food was also very good.

What was your funniest moment?
When I went and sat down at this Italian restaurant. The waiter came over and called me a big American and told me he could get me a deal on steak and pasta and after he delivered the food, he sat down and me and him just talked.
Pros
  • Learning experience
  • Meet new people
  • Exploration
Cons
  • no AC
  • Jet lag
  • Language barrier

A unique experience

I really loved being in Spain to grow myself in medical field. The country was amazing, I loved the architecture, culture, and people as well. Of course the hospital experience was amazing itself as well. Everyday I learned something new which made me gain more knowledge in medicine. I was able to do more than 60 hours of shadowing and the hospital staff was very helpful and friendly. Also the fact that I shadowed in both private and public hospitals it helped me to understand how healthcare works in both sides.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I was very surprised by how people were that nice.
Pros
  • Gain knowledge about healthcare
  • amazing culture
  • Great staff
Cons
  • The people who attended the program
  • More shadowing hours
  • More departments to shadow

Had a great time shadowing in Portugal

I was surrounded by great minds and observed lots of cool procedures in the Faro General Hospital. I observed physicians in the nephrology unit, cardiology unit, and gastroenterology unit. Our housing was a ten minute walk to the hospital and felt very safe. I got very close to my roommates during the three weeks we were there and continue to stay in touch with them. Faro was the perfect size city to explore during the three weeks we were there and the beaches were incredible. Unfortunately we had to Uber to get to the beach but the rides were normally cheap. The trip was a fantastic experience!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
sardines
Pros
  • friends
  • apartment
  • beaches
Cons
  • ubering to beach
  • not a lot to do in city besides beach
  • bland food

Athens, Greece

I had such an amazing time, karolina and nicole are amazing city managers! The location of housing is perfect and the atmosphere was wonderful. The hospital was so interesting and the doctors were amazing teachers. The housing is in the perfect center of everything there is to do for the city. The team excursions are so much fun and educational. The food is absolutely fantastic for all dietary needs and preferences. Ask the locals about the best things to do and places to go it’s so worth listening to them!

Pros
  • Always something to do

Atlantis Shadowing in Rome

This was an excellent opportunity to shadow doctors and learn more about another culture and healthcare system all together! It was definitely worth the investment into my future, and the staff were amazing and super helpful! I gained over 80 hours of shadowing in neurology, thoracic surgery, cardiology, emergency medicine, neonatal pathology, radiology, and many others! I would highly recommend this experience to anyone who is interested or on the fence about it. It was an amazing 3 weeks I will never forget!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Push yourself to get the most out of the experience as possible. Stay longer to shadow other doctors and other fields! Visit historic monument and sites! Get out of your comfort zone and ask questions!
