The best time of my life

Sometimes when you study in a small university of the countryside you might feel like the world is too big for you, you get curious about how hard should be living in a big city and studying in a big great university.
The truth is that UWA is a big and a small University at the same time, at least I thought so. There are thousands of students there, the campuses are incredible, sometimes I felt like I was in Hogwarts. There are old and modern buildings, gardens, heaps of animals and it is just beside the Swan River, what makes it even charmer. The staff is really helpful and kind, everytime I had to deal with them I felt like they wanted me to stay longer in UWA.
Sometimes I spent the whole day there, lot of assignments to do and lectures to catch up ( yeah, the lecture are recorded, you can check them later online). There was everything that I needed there. During the exams period, I even slept at the library. I felt like home. There were not bad days there, even when I was bit grumpy as soon as I saw the campus, my day got better, my humour changed.
There are lots of international students there, people from everywhere in the world, from different backgrounds, I am sure you will fit, you will find a group and make such great friends, because I did it. I just the best time of my life in UWA and Perth.
Perth is insanely beautiful. The big city in the west coast, but at the same time, a small one. It is quiet, safe.
I have no words to describe my experience there, I am so grateful for everything that happened to me while in Perth. I hope you all can understand what I meant and feel what I felt.

What would you improve about this program?
The program is awesome. But few adjustments would make more awesome. I think the students must be incentivated to make the most of the most of their time there. Some of them do not realise how important to them is to studying at UWA and the amount of stuff they are missing if they do not enjoy it everything and feel the UWA experience.

Western Australia - The year you'll never forget.

Living in Perth and studying in UWA was a unique experience. The extremely modern and developed infrastructure the university offers, as well as the great faculty that teaches the students made my year in Perth the best it could be. In addition, the quality of life you achieve by living in Western Australia is incredible, immersed in all the wilderness Australia has to offer, the beautiful city of Perth doesn't lack any urban aspect you would expect of the most isolated metropolis in the world.

Why did you choose this program?

I applied for studying at the University of Western Australia because I was about to finish my undergraduate degree in biological sciences in my home country, and UWA is a good source if you enjoy sciences and research. I also chose Australia because of its famous wildlife and outdoors lifestyle.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

The University assisted me with all personal and psychological support, free classes to improve language skills, and excellent facilities, especially the libraries and all the free online material available for all students.
I had to organize a house to live in by myself, but the University can also help you with it, in case you need.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

To anyone thinking of experiencing life overseas, I say YOU SHOULD GO! Every experience counts, every challenge makes you stronger and more confident that the day before! Live everyday of your exchange program as it was the last one, and you will have the best time of your life! Be grateful and stay strong, you will not regret.

So many times in our lives we get held back by fears and insecurities, whether in making new friends or taking new chances. I would say to anyone who ever struggles with this that life is much bigger than an impossibility. So, go for it! Do your best because the only person to whom you need to prove anything is you!

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

An average day at the University of Western Australia looks like a great opportunity to learn from excellent teachers, meet new people, make good friends, engage in projects, join clubs, play sports, and enjoy the wildlife of campus! There are also plenty of options to eat and drink between classes.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was to speak, write and think in my second language (English). I was afraid I could not talk to people or understand them very well. However, it happened to be an excellent challenge in which I could develop my skills as never before and I am proud of myself. Today, I am much more self-confident because of that experience.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Sara graduated from Ohio University's E.W. Scripps School of Journalism in 2008 and then decided to move to Australia to pursue a Master of Education degree as well as her dream to work in the field of international education. A huge lover of sports, she has also spent a significant amount of time traveling the globe and has lived in various places, including Dublin, London, Los Angeles, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. Now, she lives in Curitiba, Brazil, managing recruitment of students from the Americas for The University of Western Australia.

What is your favorite travel memory?

we are not hippies we are happies

Really hard question to answer, but I would have to say Machu Picchu. I went in December 2015 with my boyfriend, and we decided to do the proper Inca Trail, which takes 4 days, 3 nights.

It was the HARDEST thing I ever did in my life. I even got altitude sickness on day 2 and got sick on the mountain. Hiking 8-12 hours per day carrying your packs, we pushed ourselves to the limit. But nothing was better than that feeling of accomplishment when we arrived super early in the morning to the site, and it was just fantastic.

I was so proud to have done it, but even happier to have done it alongside my best friend, who was always there supporting me. He even carried my pack and his for a couple hours when I thought I couldn't go on! Maybe we should have done some training first.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Absolutely. UWA has given me so many professional opportunities. I was promoted twice within the university, and when I proposed the idea of working offshore, based in Brazil, to increase UWA's engagement with local universities and students, UWA agreed.

It has been a challenging but amazing experience to live in a country that doesn't speak my language, and I feel more confident in myself and my abilities having overcome many difficulties during this time.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

I've heard all the stories. So many people met the loves of their lives while studying at UWA. Some had amazing internship experiences that led them to securing jobs after graduation. And many students that went on exchange are now applying for Master's degrees to go back. These are great things to hear!

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I really like UWA's new Master of Urban Planning. I love to plan, and this course is all about learning how to deal with the growth of cities, sustainability, environmental protection, how to deal with poverty and homelessness, etc. Students even get to do an internship in the public or private sector, too. I think this course is really unique and the interest is definitely growing.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

UWA staff really care about the students. There is SO much support available. I loved getting to know the international students when I worked there in Perth because I remember what it was like being one.

I think students have a very personal support from UWA staff before, during and after their studies there.

It was great knowing the students on a first-name basis and also keeping in touch with them when they go back to their home countries.
