About Program

Cobblestone streets, ancient bridges, and a hilltop castle help lend the City of a Hundred Spires its reputation as one of the world’s most beautiful, brimming with architecture from every period and style in its millennial history.

Prague is unique in Europe, having shed its Communist past and brimming with carefully preserved monuments from every period and style in its millennial history. There’s plenty of quirky, too, like the Zizkov Tower adorned with climbing babies, and the distinctly nontraditional Dancing House.

Courses are available in English and Czech.

3 weeks in Prague was the perfect taste of studying abroad!

I completed a three-week January term class in Prague through CIEE. Three weeks was the perfect time to enjoy the freedom of studying abroad while avoiding the stress of being gone for a whole semester. CIEE staff struck the right balance of structure and freedom for us students. CIEE offered optional co-curricular activities but also gave us lots of time to explore Prague independently. Additionally, Prague is a real affordable city. I was a financially conscious traveler and Prague definitely gave me the bang for my buck. The J-term was a great alternative to a semester study abroad!

Pros
  • co-cirricular trips offered
  • great program sponsored housing
  • friendly, caring on-site staff
Cons
  • Czech language is difficult
  • crowded during the holiday season

Studying abroad in Prague changed my life!

This past semester, I participated in CIEE's Central European Studies Program in Prague. For four months, I learned about the history of Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Germany and Poland and discovered my newfound interest in the region's politics. CIEE immersed me in a completely new culture and provided me with the on-site support I needed to have such a life-changing semester. I felt like I had the independence to explore on my own, but was so grateful for the CIEE-sponsored activities like cooking classes, a trip to Berlin and seeing the ballet that was also offered. CIEE is truly a one-of-a-kind program and I am so grateful for the lifelong friends and mentors I made in the Czech Republic!

Pros
  • Program trip to Berlin
  • Great on-site support
  • Great housing
Cons
  • Czech is a difficult language
  • No meal plan

The Perfect City and a Great Program

Prague truly is the perfect place to study abroad, and CIEE is by far the best program in Prague. Classes are interesting but not too challenging and program coordinators are communicative and kind. Above all else, CIEE plans unique and free excursions. Some of my personal favorites include glass blowing and an overnight trip to Berlin.

Prague is an incredible city. It is centrally located and very cheap, as well as full of life and history. The nightlife and culture are both unmatched, which make for a great opportunity to meet other Americans studying abroad. There is something for everyone in Prague, as it is a large city full of different areas to explore. I could not imagine studying anywhere else.

Pros
  • No Friday classes
  • Cost of living is very cheap
  • Nightlife
Cons
  • Gloomy weather

Prague is a Hidden Gem

For me, Prague was the perfect city to study in and experience. It is perfectly centralized, making travel to other European countries very easy and accessible. The size of the city is big enough to never get bored, but also small enough to feel like a community/home. It is also super affordable with unique restaurants and night life. The perfect place to study abroad and CIEE is the perfect program as their activities and staff were amazing! They planned events that really submerged the students into the cultural and were very available and responsive to questions/concerns.

Pros
  • Affordable
  • Great public transportation
  • Beautiful
Cons
  • Frequently cloudy and rainy weather

From the food to the language, it is all a great experience. 10/10 recommend. Prague is also very inviting and accepting of Americans too which was helpful.

CIEE Prague Fall Semester 2022

CIEE Prague is carefully designed to allow students the opportunity to study in an academically challenging environment while taking advantage of their proximity to local culture in Prague, day trip excursions in the Czech Republic and nearby travel to dozens of unique cities throughout Europe. The close knit nature of a program suitable for an ideal capacity around 100 students allows for personal growth, strong friendships, and ample opportunities to succeed while immersing in a completely new cultural environment.

Pros
  • No Friday classes
  • Inexpensive and accessibly travel by plane and train
  • Safety
Cons
  • Minor language barrier
  • Overcast and cold weather most days

January in Prague Czech Republic

My experience was unique due to the challenges covid posed with going abroad and at the time of my group arriving In January 2022 Prague had just finished another lockdown and at this point they were opening most businesses again. It was a wonderful experience because of the support of the staff. I think that Prague might be a nicer visit in the spring or summer but if you don’t mind the cold too much and pack warm, there is still plenty to do. The staff also had planned some well thought out day trips for us. There is not much traveling you can do since the program I did was only 3 weeks and covid makes it difficult to cross borders now without recent negative test results but getting to Prague itself wasn’t so hard. The day trips that we went on were often outside for the majority of the day in the cold so I recommend really packing lots of layers and being prepared to walk outside in cold, rainy, or snowy weather for a couple of hours at a time. I will say that the trips are very interesting and will keep you pretty engaged the whole time.

Pros
  • Very nice accommodations
  • Interesting culture and activities
  • Very safe city
Cons
  • Pack layers- more than you think
  • Not many excursions
  • Lack of access to travel during program because of length and covid

Great Program

I had a great time in the spring because of both Prague and the CIEE program. One of my favorite memories was the final party that CIEE threw for all of us at the end of the program. They really wanted all of us to have a great time and they ensured that we did by listening to everyones wants and needs for the semester and trying their hardest help. I felt that the housing of the program was awesome, I got to meet some of my closest friends in my building and had a great time being so close to all of them!

Pros
  • Great City
  • Great program
  • Easy travel
Cons
  • Hard to get the visa
  • Can be expensive to travel to some parts of Europe (small airport)
