About Program

Set amongst the foothills of picturesque mountains, Seoul is home to over half of South Korea’s population and is the epicenter of the country’s government and economy. TEAN by WorldStrides partnership with Korea University allows students to study abroad in Seoul throughout the year with a semester, summer or winter term program.

More than 40% of the courses available at Korea University are taught in English, so you can rest assured that you'll find course options to stay on track for graduation. Korean language courses are offered every semester at six different levels and students fluent in Korean, will have access to the school's full range of courses (with a few exceptions)!

Our program also includes a fun orientation at the start of the semester along with in-country staff to provide support every step of the way.

Pros
  • Great public transportation and safety
  • Fun activities + festivals, concerts, and more open to the public
  • Cheap
Cons
  • Learn some basic words or phrases. Yes, a lot of Koreans are able to communicate in English but you will find yourself in situations where there’s no English at all
  • Hills and stairs everywhere and I’m not exaggerating. Even the university is built on top of a hill
  • Hard to get involved on campus as a foreigner

Korea University Winter 2023

When I first entered university I had a good idea about things I would see and do. Unfortunately, I started the year COVID hit and my college experience has been completely lackluster and miserable. I was beginning to think going to college in general is just a terrible experience. However, I took a chance in my junior year and studied abroad in Seoul. It was everything I imagined college should be like and more. I would 100% recommend taking that leap of faith to study abroad, it will definitely pay off.

A Memorable Experience in Korea

Pros
  • Program Outings (Temple seeing, exploring the city, eating together, etc.)
  • Public Transportation
  • Feeling Safe to travel alone
Cons
  • It is pretty hard to be vegetarian and even more so vegan (I am pescatarian and it was a bit hard)
  • I am a POC with a afro. So, there was a lot of stares and even once some locals touched my hair without my consent but I wasn't upset. Just explained in my best abilities that they could not do that.
  • Have good walking shoes and I mean plural. It is very hilly and you walk everywhere. I do not mind walking at all but my shoes became very ran down with holes near my achilles heel due to the amount of walking up hills.

Go To Korea University

I studied abroad in Korea at Korea University last semester and honestly, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made!! I met great people worldwide and honestly, I cannot think of any bad thing in Korea. It almost feels like I was on a vacation to meet new people. TEAN also offered a lot of activities for us and they were all very FUN! I thought people were being dramatic when they talked about their study abroad experiences and it used to bother me a lot. But I see myself only talking about my life in Korea NONSTOP to everyone I meet! 10000% Recommended!

Pros
  • transportation
  • cost of living
  • foreigner friendly

Hanyang University with TEAN

I had an amazing experience studying abroad with TEAN during Spring 2023. With all of the fun activities TEAN prepared for us like touring Nami Island, going to Busan, and a Han river cruise, I definitely don't regret picking TEAN for my study abroad experience. It was also reassuring knowing that we could contact TEAN staff in Korea basically at any time and the onsite staff is very kind! South Korea is a great destination for study abroad as it's easy to travel around the country with its convenient public transportation and school life there is very dynamic! I would definitely recommend studying abroad in South Korea with TEAN.

Pros
  • Easy transportation
  • Cost of living
  • Fun activities
Cons
  • Inconsistent weather

Absolutely Life-changing

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would take advantage of how much there is to do. I regret not doing more with the time and independence I had like explore the country, take all sorts of hobby classes, try new restaurants, etc. The city and the country are so much bigger than you think.
Pros
  • Most KU classes didn't have a consistently heavy workload like the US (ex. having an essay due every other week with constant tests), meaning you had time to explore. However, less assignments = higher reliance on good exam scores
  • Easy to travel - I had friends go to all over the country. Once they got their ARC's they went to Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and more.
  • Language barrier is rarely a problem, especially if one learns some basic phrases
Cons
  • The dorms of KU is on a hill, just be prepared for that
  • KU is a little farther out in the city compared to other universities; Anam has a lot of charm and restaurants, but most activities are outside of the Seongbuk-Gu district
  • Difficult to engage in university club activities due to language barriers and/or not accepting non-full-time students

Seoul Study Abroad

Seoul was such an incredible city to experience during the Spring 2023 semester. I had great quality of life in terms of safety, affordability, and amusement! There are endless things to do in Seoul like explore the food scene, take in the city's green spaces, do some great shopping, or going to karaoke. The TEAN staff was very helpful in making me feel prepared prior to my program in terms of helping me get my visa, teaching me about the cultural expectations of Korea, and even just guidance on what to pack. I also felt reassured in that there were TEAN staff members on-site during my stay abroad.

Pros
  • Rich culture
  • Affordable lifestyle
  • Amazing food
Cons
  • Homogeneous country (foreigners tend to stick out)
  • Intense heat during summer months
  • Language barrier

Questions & Answers

In Seoul, I would say that quite a large amount of people can understand and speak at least a little English. In popular areas with heavy foot traffic like Hongdae, Myeongdong, itaewon and Dongdaemun you should be ok to use English because they get a lot of foreigners there. At Korea University in Anam since there are a lot of university students that had to study English back in high school and...
