10/10 experience

A lot of universities could take a lesson or two from how everything is arranged at Maximo Nivel. I took the Spanish course in Guatemala five years ago, and I chose Maximo Nivel this time to have a different adventure because I knew that everything would be well arranged and that the highest quality would be guaranteed.

I would even dare to say that the brochure and website information undersell what a truly amazing experience the TEFL course is, mainly due to the great teacher we had. Sean has the energy, knowledge, and patience to develop great future teachers.

Not only does the course content give you exactly what you need to prepare yourself to be in front of a class, but it also gives you the hands-on practice to stand there with confidence, think on your feet, and enjoy the experience.

I am already missing the classes and Cuzco. Thank you Maximo Nivel and thank you Sean!

What was your funniest moment?
Easily it was some of the stories shared by my cohort and/or from our instructor Sean during our lesson warm-ups. Hilarious.
Pros
  • Learning/reinforcing techniques that encourage the students to come up with all of the information (Increasing STT - Student Talk Time) such as eliciting, CCQing (Concept Check Questions), Error Correction, and EPA (Engage, Practice, and Activation)..
  • The opportunity to teach several mini lessons, both in class and online, in the weeks leading up to the final week, where everyday you prepare for and teach a live classroom of curious Cusqueños while being critiqued by your instructor.
  • Sean is one of the very best instructors I´ve ever had. He is incredibly funny and also has a great gift for pulling excellent content out of his students. Every day was fun! He's a man deep in-love with the art of teaching English language.
Cons
  • Somehow, no matter how in shape I believed myself to be, I always ran out of breath climbing those stairs to the third floor TEFL classroom. It's almost as if I were living 4,000 meters above sea level... oh wait.
  • The grammar book included in the curriculum was advanced and therefore a plethora of basic grammar information was left out of it, which in my opinion seems be the most important, reflecting the grammar we would be teaching our students.
  • Although I received a lot of assistance and practice with creating my own lesson plans, I would have liked a full-lesson or two on where and how to pilfer excellent previously created lesson plans from reliable sources/teachers on the interwebs.

TEFL at Maximo

I obtained my TEFL accredation through Maximo Nivél in Peru and have had a great month learning to become a TEFL teacher there. The classes were difficult but very enjoyable and gave me great insights on how to become a great TEFL teacher. I especially enjoyed getting to teach actual students and getting first-hand experience on what the job might be like. As a class, we got a lot of tips and assistance from our TEFL trainer regarding job possibilities and how we can set up for example online teaching, which was really helpful. The course was a lot of hard work, but our trainer made it a lot of fun to go to class every day. It was definitely a worthwhile experience!

What was your funniest moment?
I loved the in-between moments where we really bonded as a class and with the staff at Maximo!
Pros
  • Real life teaching experience
  • Knowledgeable and funny trainers
  • Being able to live in Cusco for a while
Cons
  • Not that many teaching hours
  • It's a lot of work in a short time

TEFL Course

Amazing course I loved taking the t with Lewis and Sean. Lewis and Sean were prepared, and delivered the course in a manner where we addressed subject matter regarding English and improving the Student Talking Time. I was given resources to get a job, and am currently teaching at Maximo Nivel after my TEFL. The course provided me with skills to advance, and also provided me with professional development tools. The resources at the school were amazing, and the teachers were not soft I wasnt just given my certificiation.

Very good course

The entire course was very enjoyable, the teacher made what would be a heavy course very fun, and I am now filled with confidence going into my new career as an English teacher. The course itself was great fun, despite being incredibly heavy, we still managed to enjoy ourselves the entire time. I would absolutely recommend the course itself to people, as well as recommending the teacher.
Furthermore, the international staff who help us out were especially helpful, making sure that we were safe and looked after while getting used to the new surroundings.

What was your funniest moment?
Whenever reading, the teacher would often get us to read out chunks of text in accents. Sufficed to say it was a hilarious car crash.

Great TEFL Program with Maximo Nivel in Cusco, Peru

This was a small TEFL program embedded in an institute with an English language program for folks in Cusco, which made the practice teaching quite authentic. There were many additional options, like tandem conversations, cooking classes, salsa classes. The teaching was excellent - Sean Barter is an enthusiastic expert teacher. We got a lot of detailed feedback and learned a lot in a short period of time. I loved Cusco - the mountains, the sky, the people, the food -- I'm so glad that I went. I highly recommend the program.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would stay in Peru for longer!
And if I had longer, I'd try to learn Spanish.
Pros
  • great course!
  • good people!
  • beautiful country!
Cons
  • host family house was cold at night

TEFL in Peru

This course was very well created and provides everything you need to begin and earn in teaching. The instructor was very approachable and was able to create a fun and enjoyable learning environment that encouraged us to do our best. Really enjoyed it.
The lessons and the experience gained are worth every penny, I feel much more confident in my ability to teach and prepare lessons now for a variety of language levels. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a change in pace or to add another string to their bow.

TEFL experience

I was feeling apprehensive before starting this journey. As a non native speaker, I wanted to prove to myself that I was able to take an advanced and well qualified course in English. As the days went by I felt more comfortable doing the course. My classmates and Sean made this small adventure one of the best I've ever had. Maximo Nivel and its staff are amazing, I really recommended taking this course. We covered everything from teaching methodologies, English grammar, teaching with games, the differences between teaching adults and teenagers. We started practice teaching on the 3rd day of course with real English students. The highlight was the practical teaching week at the end of the course.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be open-minded and have fun.
Pros
  • Lots of practice teaching
Cons
  • None
