Karen was the best TEFL trainer ever! I got a job within weeks of arriving. I can't believe how much I learned in the short period of the course and I couldn't be happier! Made lifelong friends, as well.

What would you improve about this program?

More food options in Maximo and better host family placement (I was in 2 because the first didn't work out). Also, keep the bathrooms working at all times.

I just completed the TEFL Certification course in Cusco Peru at Maximo Nivel. I had a great experience. The quality of the school and the helpfulness of the whole staff exceeded my expectations. Karen is a great TEFL trainer and makes the course fun and interesting. All of the people at the school were positive and created a great atmosphere. In the TEFL course you will have the opportunity to teach local ESL students right away. This is a great learning experience and I learned more about teaching and the English language than I could have imagined!

In addition to the school, Cusco is a beautiful city! Highly recommended.

I just completed Maximo Nivel's Hybrid TEFL program in Cusco, Peru, and what an awesome experience it was! After teaching English at a Canadian college for over 27 years, I decided I'd like a TEFL course to support me in volunteer teaching in retirement. I did much of the academic portion of the program at home, and then completed the practical teaching portion in Cusco. It was an all around superb experience for the following reasons. First, it was a small group of 5 students, so we had time to get to know and support each other. Every day we worked closely together, completing assignments, observing classes and practicing the ESL techniques with each other. Our instructor, Karen Wilke was as good as you can get in terms of sense of humour, support, teaching expertise and creativity. She consistently displayed all the characteristics of an excellent mentor. The support staff at Maximo were top-notch as well. They were always there to answer questions, provide info and to check up on as daily as to whether we were happy with everything. At the end of the course we had a small grad party followed by a hilarious karaoke outing. I can't say enough my awesome experience with Maximo Nivel.

What would you improve about this program?

Provide a warmer and brighter classroom to work out of.

The TEFL program in Cusco is great! LanguageCorps did a great job of answering all my questions and preparing me before coming to Cusco. When I got here, the partner school did a fantastic job of making me feel settled here and they were available 24/7 (literally) to helps with any questions or anything else you needed. The TEFL course itself was really good and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to do the course. The instructor is fantastic and really knows how to make the course fun. It is challenging, but definitely manageable and the instructor definitely helps you with time management and completing the requirements. The best part about this TEFL course is that you get to actually teach real ESL students for a week. In addition to the course, Cusco is a beautiful city with so much to do and so much to see around here. I definitely recommend you doing the program in Peru!

My experience at Maximo Nivel has been fantastic! The TEFL course definitely prepared me really well for teaching students all around the world. My TEFL instructor was the best teacher and the course would not have been the same without her. I learned so much from her, my peers, current teachers at Maximo, and from practical teaching week! Maximo also helped me with the job search (and all 16 of the students in my class ended up with jobs in Peru during or after the course), as well as with the apartment search among many other things. I am so glad I decided to come to Maximo in Cusco, Peru for the course. Also, Cusco is a great city to explore and there is so much to do here! Ah TEFL, a great course an amazing experience and full of so many laughs! I really did not know what to expect when signing up to the course but I was pleasantly surprised. Karen my TEFL tutor was amazing! Great at her job and always had time to help you with any problems, she works super hard and clearly cares so much about her students. All the staff at maximo are super helpful and friendly. Overall i really enjoyed the TEFL course and I learnt so much. Freakin' great course!

What would you improve about this program?

TEFL is a backdated course so towards the end you doing a fair bit of work, I never thought in my life I would ever be doing school work on a saturday. Although the course is backdated realisticly I am not sure if there is any way round this problem. Another minor problem is that there is some days with excercises that seem like filler.

TEFL in Cusco was a truly life changing experience. It gave me the practical skills and the confidence to teach English in any country no matter the local language. I found the program extremely thorough, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to change fields, or who just wants an adventure abroad. The week of practical teaching and intensive guidance on creating lesson plans left me feeling more than prepared to teach my own class.

What would you improve about this program?

If I had to change one thing it would be making TEFL a little shorter. As many practical elements that the course had, it also had some filler content that I felt the course could do without. For instance, I would have preferred the last few days to have been strictly about practical teaching techniques and material. I felt that that learning about International exams, as interesting as it may be for some, was somewhat unnecessary for me.

I was really nervous when I first arrived, because I had already missed the first day due to flight mix-ups. So I walked in and there were two people in the room, my teacher and fellow student. I got to know them really well. The class was hands on from the beginning. I remember in the first few days I was up giving practice lectures on the board and I taught the macarena to some students at the end of that week (they already knew it, but the students played along). The TEFL course at Maximo was a great experience. All of the staff were extremely supportive and friendly. The night scene is a worthy one as well if you can find the time.

the food was a bit salty, but my host nanna was so stubborn.

Hello! Our TEFL course is 150 hours total. This includes 100 hours in class, 6 hours observing other teachers, 6-8 hours practical teaching, 37 hours assigned reading, lesson planning, and Grammar Paper and Personal Development Paper. How much does your program cost?

The cost is $1700 but if you volunteer with the Maximo Nivel program before or after the TEFL course you can receive a $700 discount. Classes are offered once a month and start around the third week of the month.

Why did you decide to participate in the Maximo Nivel TEFL and teaching program in Peru?

Shruti: I decided to participate in the Maximo Nivel TEFL and teaching program in Peru for multiple reasons. In college, I majored in accounting and marketing. After college, I worked at a big four accounting firm for 3 years. In my free time, I would always volunteer in education at schools as a classroom assistant or tutor.

After much consideration and thought, I realized that I wanted to pursue a career in international educational development instead of accounting/business. I started reaching out to people I knew in the field and learned about TEFL/TESOL/CELTA. I had visited Peru last year for 8 days on vacation and fell in love with Cusco.

I had heard about Maximo Nivel on this trip a lot when I asked around about the education in Peru and in Cusco. Further, I got in touch with a friend of a friend who actually did the TEFL program at Maximo Nivel and worked there for 6 months.

He had only good things to say about the program, teaching at Maximo Nivel, and living there. As a result, I felt that doing the program at Maximo Nivel seemed to be the best fit for me.

Describe your day to day activities as a teacher and in the TEFL program.

In the TEFL program, we had class Tuesday-Thursday from 9am-4pm. On Mondays and Fridays, we had mini-lessons to practice teaching to actual ESL students.

The last week of the course was the practical teaching week, so our hours of class was shortened to approximately 4 hours and then we had our hour of practical teaching (to an actual ESL class) every day. To obtain your TEFL certification, we had to write two papers, 5 observations of teachers teaching different levels of classes, and 3 mini lessons.

I believe that our TEFL instructor prepared us well to teach ESL students! My day to day activities as a teacher differ slightly. My hours at Maximo Nivel as a teacher are from 7am-10am and 5pm-9pm. I love teaching here and the students are great!

What was the best moment of the entire trip?

I'm not sure I can just choose one best moment of my trip so far. I have loved everything about moving to Cusco! One of my favorite moments was getting my very first feedback forms from my first month of teaching. The feedback forms are given to all classes at the end of every month for students to rate their teachers.

My first feedback was really great because over 90% of my students gave me an "Excellent" review and the rest gave me "Good" and I had no "Needs Improvement."

Knowing that my students liked me and my teaching abilities was such an amazing feeling. Apart from teaching at Maximo, I have loved all the hikes, sightseeing, and traveling I have been able to do while I am here. I have gotten to see some pretty spectacular places!

Tell me about one person you met.

You meet a lot of interesting people here, whether in the program, the staff, or local people. I have made a lot of friends from my TEFL program and locally, as well.

One person that I have met is my current roommate. I met her in my TEFL program and she came from Arizona. However, similar to me, she has had a lot of experience living abroad and has lived in Australia and Uganda.

She completed her masters in international educational development in Australia and is now applying for the Peace Corps for the following year. It has been a lot of fun getting to know people that share similar goals in life!

How has this experience impacted your future?

This experience will definitely be an asset to my future plans. Since I am changing careers from business to education, this experience has been a great foot in the door to gain some experience in education.

It has also helped me get into the International Educational Development Masters Program at Penn GSE, which I am looking forward to doing next fall. I think this experience will definitely be an asset in the future when I apply for educational development jobs after grad school!
