Excellent overall experience. Harrison usually responds to emails within 24 hours. All the information provided to me was clear and detailed. I felt supported and informed throughout the entire process. I would highly recommend their program and services. Everyone I was in contact with was very helpful. Their guidance and resources are invaluable. I don’t think my transition to a new job and country would have been as easy without them. Especially during these unusual circumstances (COVID-19) it was a relief to have their help.

Harrison and his team are extremely hands-on and always ready to help. I have thrown all different kinds of scenarios at them and they have helped and handled it with ease. They assist you in the process in ways that I have not heard of other programs doing and they always respond quickly. They truly help you ease your transition into Spain. They care about the well-being of their clients. They also are sure to help link you with other members of the group who are in the same area as you so that you can start to build your own sense of community.

RVF International is the perfect organization to collaborate with if one wants to teach English in Spain. The entire team worked extremely hard to make sure I was comfortable with the process, various appointments and comprehension of every piece of information they presented to me. From translating my documents to following up with me months after I arrived, they are skilled in every facet. The prioritization of team work within the RVF ranks is also extremely admirable and makes the entire process a breeze. If it weren't for RVF, I KNOW my experiences and processes would have been more stressful and taken longer time.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
It's okay to be nervous, this is a nerve-racking experience! Taking a leap of faith and committing to working with RVF to move to Spain to teach English was the best thing I've done with my life so far and I cannot stress enough how important an experience like this for mental health, finding oneself and gaining new perspectives about anything and everything.

RVF was key for navigating a daunting process

I knew I wanted to apply to the Ministry aux program but I found the application process overwhelming. Plus, the Ministry only contacts you about acceptance and placement, leaving you to navigate all of the bureaucratic mess in the States and Spain on your own. The thought of that made me pretty nervous since it would be my first time living outside of the States. So finding RVF was a blessing for me. They were there with support and resources every step of the way making all the processes – background checks, visas, TIE, etc – a breeze!

RVF International Teaching Experience

It's a great program and I was able to visit some beautiful cities before the lockdowns because of COVID. I'm sure that this experience would be much more amazing if there wasn't COVID restrictions this year but I'm planning on doing another year and hopefully it will the full adventurous experience that it normally is. The one negative you should know about this job is that the pay is not high, so you won't be making much money. However, the costs of living and the food costs are pretty low so you can make some money and if you travel often you will probably come out even or maybe lose some depending on where you travel. So it is best to save some money before coming. There are many benefits however, such as having lots of time and days off to travel to so many cities and countries close by.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice is to come with a friend or two if you can so that there are more people to share the experience with and some people you can always speak English with (unless you are trying to learn Spanish). Also, make sure you have saved up some money before coming since the beginning part of getting your house, food, and other money related things figured out and it will cost more money in the beginning. Also, travel as much as you can and try to learn Spanish as much as you can before and during your time in Spain!

This was my first time traveling and living abroad. RVF International has been super helpful during the whole process, especially during such an uncertain and stressful time with the Coronavirus pandemic. They are very knowledgeable and supportive when you need them the most. I am so glad that I decided to participate in the North American Language and Cultural Assistants program with the Spanish Ministry of Education, and that I chose RVF International to support me. I've only been in Madrid for 3 months but I've enjoyed it immensely even with Covid restrictions...I'm very happy and have no regrets!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I was anxious in the beginning to speak Spanish but I prepared with Duolingo and then used my Google Translate app if need be. The more I tried the less nerve-racking it became.

More than enough help!

I came to Spain during a very hard time, during COVID-19 in the year 2020. It would have been impossible if I didn’t have the support of RVF. Helping not only with the government processing, but also with the emotional toll that moving abroad during such a time takes by being available for a call when I needed and providing mental health services made the transition very easy.

I will be leaving with new friends, experiences, and an open door to this country down the road if I so choose to take it.

Smooth, simple, and worth every penny!

I had the chance to work with Harrison from beginning to end during the complicated process of obtaining work and a visa. The process was daunting given the pandemic but I was given every bit of information needed so that I never felt I was on my own in this process. Harrison was also more than willing to answer any and every question I had which was helpful during the uncertainty of the pandemic.

What's nice about RVF too is that we have the chance to easily connect with other Auxiliares that signed up through RVF so even when you get to Spain you have plenty of other people to meet with so you're not alone in a new country! 10/10 experience!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Sign up as early as possible! You only have a limited amount of choices in which community you work in so the sooner you apply, the better chance you have of working in the city you actually want to work in!

Is there a housing stipend? Or is housing provided? If not, is that affordable with the pay there?

Hello Jeremy, Thank you for your question! Housing is independent and is not included in the program. However, our program has a very comprehensive housing assistance plan that helps our program participants find housing in Spain. On average, on average those in our program who follow our housing plan move into a fully furnished apartment in Spain within the first 48-72 hours of arriving in Spain...

Why did you choose this program?

I chose this program because I felt that RVF International really had my best interests in mind.

They made everything seem so personal, and it really made this huge leap of faith a lot less stressful. They explained that they would assist with every step of the way to get to Spain, and they did exactly that. They not only provided me with so many resources and so much guidance, but they were also there at a drop of a hat to answer any and all of my questions.

I am very pleased with my decision.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Where do I begin? There was just so much assistance along this journey to living and working in Spain. I guess I could start from the beginning.

RVF International helped me complete the application and registration paperwork, which is mostly in Spanish so having them assist me with everything to fill out was such a HUGE help. They let me know where to go to get the background check, the fingerprints, where to send all of the paperwork. They provided a step-by-step guide on how to fill everything out, but it was up to me to actually fill it out.

After the application was submitted, we began the Visa process. Very similar to the application and registration process. RVF International provided a guide and step-by-step form to obtain and fill out all of the necessary paperwork needed for the Visa appointment. RVF took the responsibility of scheduling the appointment for me, which was awesome.

After the visa was said and done, we began to prepare for my departure. RVF sent me numerous notes and ideas for things to pack, what to expect, and how to handle my first couple weeks in this foreign land. When it came to housing, RVF sent me a list of websites that Spain uses for renting apartments. It was really helpful, and the first place I went to go see, I ended up renting! (By the way, Google Translator became my best friend when I was house hunting).

The long term residency was up next and just like the visa, RVF scheduled this appointment for me gave me a list of everything I would need for this appointment, and let me know where to get all this new paperwork and how to fill everything out.

They really helped me with every step of the way during this journey, and I couldn't be more grateful.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Utilize Facebook groups to find other English teachers around you. I am in a small town and the only English teacher in my town. Thankfully I was able to find another English teacher in the town right next to mine via a Facebook group and we now hang out every weekend!

Don't be shy to reach out to people. Be prepared for the culture shock. If the going gets tough, just keep reminding yourself why you wanted to come to Spain in the first place and stay focused on that. Take advantage of all of the 3-day weekends!

Also, be prepared for the cold winters. Many rooms/apartments don't have central heating and it does get really cold at night!

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

For each participant, it will vary. For me though, I work 16 hours Monday-Thursday. Monday I go from 9-2. Tuesdays and Thursdays I go from 9-12:30. And Wednesdays I go from 9-1.

Each day after work, I either take a walk along the beach or lie down for a little siesta (I don't know when I'll ever have this much free time again, so fully taking advantage of it). During the evenings, I keep busy with my side online job. I then prepare dinner and watch Netflix to end the night. (I'm trying to incorporate practicing Spanish more!) Then I have my 3 day weekends to relax some more and take either some fun day trips or quick weekend get-a-ways!

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was the language barrier. And to be honest, it still scares me a little.

I came to Spain not knowing any Spanish, and it has been hard at times, but I have been able to work my way through every struggle and obstacle. Like I said earlier, Google Translator has become my best friend while I've been out here.

I now know that I shouldn't be afraid of trying to speak Spanish. It won't be the prettiest, I can guarantee that, but there is no better way to learn and overcome these fears than by practicing and gaining confidence that I can do it.

What was one of your favorite things to do while abroad?

One of my favorite things to do in my town is to explore the castle. It has so much history, and Game of Thrones filmed some of their episodes there!

There are so many castles throughout Spain, it's amazing. So much history and so much beauty.

I also love how there are palm trees everywhere. It makes life so much more beautiful!

What is your favorite travel memory?

My favorite travel memory is from my trip to Bavaria, Germany, in 2018. I visited Germany for the first time to meet my in-laws. They did an excellent job of showing me some of the most beautiful places in southern Germany. I felt incredibly special and excited to witness the country's stunning beauty. We explored numerous castles, lakes, mountains, and more. It was a truly magical experience.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Firstly, I've come to realize how fulfilling it is to know that I can make a positive impact on people's lives through my work. Helping individuals navigate the challenges of moving to another country has been a rewarding experience.

In addition to this, I've become more aware of the intricacies and difficulties that can arise when relocating to a foreign land. This heightened awareness has allowed me to better anticipate and address the needs and concerns of those undergoing this transition.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

One of the best stories I've heard from a returning student is when they expressed their gratitude for our constant support at every stage of their journey. We were there to help and assist them whenever they needed it, making their experience more comfortable.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of this job is seeing the happiness and excitement of the people who have joined our program.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I would choose our 'Teach English in Spain Program' because it not only provides you with all the necessary support when you travel abroad but also offers the opportunity to live in another country where you'll be working less than 16 hours a week. This allows you to have ample free time to travel and explore, making it an amazing and enriching experience.
