When I was looking into getting a TESOL certification there were so many options. It was hard to tell which programs were quality programs. I was glad to find one that was an 120 hour course that was also accredited. The class was affordable and easy to navigate. I appreciated having both videos and reading materials. I learned a lot of information and feel like it was well taught. I am glad I chose Uni-Prep.

Pretty good for the cost

I needed a TEFL fast and they delivered. The materials were quite exhaustive and well written. The videos were well explained. There was no practical experience and you'd never know why you got a wrong answer on the quizzes. The course itself is extremely flexible, so that is a plus if you have a full time job. I'd recommend it for sure. There is no practical experience though, but it's understandable considering the course is completely online.

What would you improve about this program?
See if they can get some better feedback from instructors, or a way to get practical experience, though it may be hard considering it's completely online.

UNI-Prep 120-hour Certificate

While I have some general experience tutoring and casually teaching English, this course was a great introduction into the more professional aspects of being an ESL teacher. I would recommend this course to those who wish to start taking their English-teaching goals more seriously.

It's a great course to prepare you for formal tutoring and even classroom situations. While lacking in specific resources to help with creating lesson plans, UNI-Prep's program makes up for it in its abundance of general lesson plan examples and ideas, along with helpful bibliographies.

Overall, it is a course that meets the introductory needs of the beginning teacher all the way through to a substantive review for more experienced ESL educators.

What would you improve about this program?
The assessment portion of this course was a simple quiz that focused on grasping the main ideas of the unit. While convenient and low-pressure, I would argue that this is possibly the weakest portion of the course. More length and substance to some of the units' assessments would be a welcome improvement.

Affordable & Easy with Full Time Schedule

My experience with the Uni-Prep Course was fantastic. I was initially worried about the time commitment on top of being a student, working with an internship, and school work assignments. I also was trying to be mindful about purchasing a TESOL course that was affordable, and this course was definitely in my budget! There are ten units, a video, reading assignment, and quiz per unit. If you are an advanced English speaker, I recommend watching the videos on an increased speed of 1.25x or 1.5x to be more time efficient. Additionally, you get two chances per quiz, and they take the highest grade. I recommend using this to your advantage and taking the quizzes back to back while the content is fresh in your mind. It is very easy to excel in this course and enjoy the process. I definitely recommend this course!

all course is divided into units, each of them has a video explanation and about 15 pages of theory, that you have to read. After you read 1 unit, you take a quiz and test your knowledge what you learned by reading and watching the video. After you finish all the units, you can have a certificate. Everything is clear, detailed, so it's a nice experience, which give you a good quality knowledge and teaches you exactly what you can need during the lessons. I recommend everyone, who doesn't have time to attend classes and want to make courses online at your own comfortable schedule

This is a very good course, and it provides the information is good chunks easy for you to study and learn. The videos could be a little better for the sound, but they provide a good guide, the information is presented really well. I enjoyed it and I recommend it highly.
The PDF documents are amazing they contain all sorts of details and provide great examples, these document will go with me everywhere as a guide.

I had a great experience with UNI-Prep. The program is very user friendly, and very organized. I took my time to finish the course at my convenience, and overall just the way the experience feels in general. Although I have several years of experience as an English teacher, I feel more confident that I can deliver my courses in a more complete professional way. I would definitely recommend UNI-Prep to anyone who's serious about getting qualified to teach English abroad.

What would you improve about this program?
If have to say that my experience was so good, I have little to say about improvements other than maybe improving the audio quality of the videos. Other than that, this course is excellent and I'm sure it's the best.

I enjoyed taking the Uni-prep TESOL certification course. I felt i was supplied with an abundance of instruction and helpful information. Each unit of work provided a lecture/video, reading material, and other sources that you could find helpful information. I also appreciated that I could work at my own pace to complete the course. I would recommend the course to others looking to become TESOL certified.

Do you have to have a teachers license or a bachelors degree?

You do not need a degree or teacher's license to register in or complete our courses. Most of our students are not teachers and do not have a teacher's license - though some do and take our course to upgrade their credentials.

Why did you choose this program?

Because I wanted to improve my chances of getting an English teaching job in China. I needed to get more qualified in order to be able to get jobs. This program was helpful because it offered me the chance to be able to get the certificate quickly as a PDF and also to ship the original certificate to me.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

They had videos, reading materials and quizzes. I already have some years of experience of teaching in different environments so I just tried to add that information to my experience and it was successful. Since the quizzes are the same for everybody, you should see which parts of information you know from before and which parts you're just learning, and that's what determines how much you're going to do on your own and how much you're going to be using the offered materials.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

I'd say that you can't know everything in advance, but if you're more knowledgeable and have more qualifications, it's always going to be in your own favor. Although even if you are completely qualified, you are always going to see new things at first, until you adapt completely to the new environment.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

Study, memorize and apply the learned techniques in your lessons and/or in your ideas for future lessons. You have to compare what you're learning vs. what you did before and try to improve on everything. Every day, you should definitely be studying and doing your best; this is obviously very important.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

Generally speaking, being afraid doesn't help anything, so you should always try to deal with issues as they come up. This hopefully helps you get ready to deal with the challenges you face. You can learn more and therefore replace fear with knowledge, which helps you deal with a lot more than just one issue.

What position do you hold at Uni-prep? What has been your career path so far?

I am the Operations Manager at UNI-Prep in charge of all our online courses and international operations. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science and worked for several years as an Analyst and Consultant before traveling to Dubai, UAE. In Dubai, one of the many projects I worked on was teaching English to students of various ages, including corporate clients and CEOs.

The culmination of my international work experience eventually led me to the world of online learning, along with TESOL teacher training. I really enjoy helping to develop new courses and finding new ways to make the online learning process more interactive and enjoyable!

Did YOU teach abroad?! If so, where and what inspired you to go?

Yes, I taught in Dubai, United Arab Emirates for 3 years where I was involved in the education industry in a number of ways. I had the privilege of teaching English at their police academy and to members of the army, along with corporate clients and C-level executives.

My family has always put an importance on traveling, so after graduating from university and gaining some work experience, I found myself seeking something different and exciting. I received a job offer to work as a Consultant in Dubai and basically ‘lucked-into’ the world of English teachers and online learning. I haven’t left since!

What does the future hold for Uni-prep?

The best part of my job is developing new courses and improving the features of our online courses – and that’s the future of UNI-Prep. We already offer a number of courses aside from TESOL in the areas of business and management, and we will be developing more. Right now, UNI-Prep is forming partnerships with job boards to give our students and graduates premium access to job search tools.

We are also in the process of creating internships and teaching opportunities with our organization and partner schools around the world. When it comes to our courses, some of our future features will include a mobile app to study from your phone, classroom chats and discussion boards.

What about the future of the teach abroad industry? How do you think education will change over the next 10 years?

English is likely to grow as the international language over the next 10 years, which will double the need for English language teachers around the world. In addition, we are seeing that online learning is becoming more popular and accepted as a cheaper and more flexible alternative to traditional classes.

With the combination of these, we not only expect an increase in the need for classroom teachers, but also virtual teachers. To give one example, English lessons through Skype is becoming a popular method of learning English, something already offered by UNI-Prep.

Which teach abroad destination is most underrated? Conversely, which is most overrated?

South America is the most underrated destination as the lower pay discourages a lot of teachers from otherwise going there. However, most individuals don’t realize the cost of living is so cheap that their salary can afford them a better experience with more spending money than a higher salary in other parts of the world.

I think parts of the Middle East can be overrated. The high pay attracts lots of candidates, but many of these countries have strict rules that may impact your ability to fully enjoy the experience. It’s very important to keep in mind the culture of the destination country when you are deciding where to work.
