TravelBud and their partners were extremely helpful in getting me trained and placed in a good job in a great place - Ho Chi Minh City. It was a lengthy, fairly expensive process but very worth all the time, effort and money. I would certainly recommend both companies if you're looking for a new adventure and line of work. Don't be mistaken on that note - this is a job after all, not an easy holiday.

TESOL in Vietnam

I am currently living and teaching in Vietnam. I did an in class TESOL through a partnering company of TravelBud. TravelBud is an amazing company and I can’t compliment them enough. From day 1 until now they have been on top of things and so helpful- they made my move from South Africa to Vietnam a breeze. I wouldn’t have been able to do it alone- thanks so much TravelBud! This has been one of the best choices of my life. I did my TESL in Ho Chi Minh City and now I am living in Hanoi. During the TESL everybody was extremely helpful and assisted me with anything I needed. I found this course a good way to become acclimated to living in another country as well as a funnel into overall Vietnam! The market tours, history lessons, language lessons, and the course itself all provided me with the tools I need to survive here.

Teaching in Vietnam

We'd both just gotten married, returned from our honeymoon and was in search of a change in lifestyle. We were always fascinated with the idea of living and working somewhere in the SEA region, and when we googled what our job options were - TravelBud's website came up. It almost sounded too good to be true - get paid a decent salary with low cost of living, and being in a geographically central location, enabling one to take advantage of travel and culture opportunities while being able to make a difference with our new jobs. We were slightly dubious at first at the thought of handing over all this money to an agent based in South Africa, while we were in New Zealand and then being guaranteed training and a job placement, but after some research into the company and a Skype call with Peter - our doubts were allayed.

Once we had our first Skype call with Peter, the ball got rolling and we were put in touch with Lisa and Megan who were fantastic in reaching out to us and providing us with all the information we needed whilst TravelBud was in the background providing support. We are so happy we took the jump and have been living in Hanoi for 2 months now, teaching at a language school. This wouldn't have been made possible without the help of TravelBud. Along the way, we've met with other teachers who came through on their own, without the help of an agency and wished that they had more support from someone - and we got that with TravelBud and their in-country partner - so if you're thinking about coming to teach in Vietnam, or any of the other areas offered by these agencies - we'd highly recommend coming through them! They provide information packs, SIM cards upon arrival, training, everything! So for us, it wasn't a huge shock when we landed and we were able to ease into everything quite easily which is great! Thanks again for the opportunity!!

What would you improve about this program?
When we signed up, there was a focus on the teaching placement being in Ho Chi Minh City according to the TravelBud website, but turns out we were placed in Hanoi as it was more difficult to get interviews for jobs prior to completing our TESOL with an in-country partner. This was not a problem for us, but before this we were under the impression it would all be in HCMC, so maybe it would be good to include that in the website information as well - that there's a possibility of being placed in Hanoi (or anywhere else within Vietnam) as well?

There are too many stories to think of one. Basically, every day is a learning curve regardless of how big or small an activity is. It's been a great experience and continues to reach new levels of adventure. I have recommended TravelBud to everyone who has asked for advice regarding teaching abroad. Even when I had other questions unrelated to TravelBud they were still always able to provide great advice.

Why did you choose this program?

When researching different companies to complete my TESOL with, TravelBud always seemed to come out on top. The program offered comes with unconditional support and ongoing guidance for experienced teachers. One of the main reasons I chose TravelBud is the fact that all of their employees have at some point taught English as a second language. And for this reason, I felt that any of the support and advice provided would be genuine.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

TravelBud provided ongoing assistance with all of the elements that come with moving abroad. I had one on one contact with the team throughout this daunting process, and not one of my questions went unanswered. I received support with visas, legalizing documents, flight itineraries, accommodation, my course and finally my job placement.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

My advice to anyone considering making the brave move to another country would be to embrace it. If you're hoping to gain life-changing experience and opportunity to thrive in another culture, then this program is for you.

Taking the leap into the unknown with a bunch of people who are hoping to do the same thing is reassuring, to say the least. Not to mention, they honestly will become lifelong friends.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

The first week of the 4-week program will involve a full orientation in your chosen country. You will be given the opportunity to meet locals, speak to people in the same position as you and fully immerse yourself in a new and exciting culture. The following three weeks will be spent studying, teaching and getting to know your fellow course mates. And to top it all off, a little celebration at the end.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was leaving my life in England behind. At the age of 28, I had well and truly settled into 'normal' life. House, job, friends, etc.

However, the loss of my wonderful mother in 2017 meant this life was turned upside down. I was full of regret for not traveling and seeing the world in my early twenties.

So rather than continue along with my very comfortable life back home, I decided to get out of my comfort zone and embrace something new.

Did you manage to settle down in Vietnam?

Before boarding a plane to Vietnam to start my new life, I had literally never stepped foot in SE Asia. Many thought I was mental, and indeed I think I sort of was.

I thought to myself, how do people live in this country? What will I do there? How will I be accepted? Will I be able to make friends?

The short answer is, all of my doubts and worries were meaningless in the end. I have been welcomed into this country with open arms. The Vietnamese have been nothing short of incredible. I have met life long friends from all over the world. And I have never been more comfortable with myself and my life.

What is your favorite travel memory?

My favorite travel memory was going to Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park. It is a protected area in north-central Vietnam bordering the Hin Namno Reserve in Laos. I remember taking the train super early to leave 'Vinh city and only had one day to venture around this place. It was honestly the most beautiful place I'd ever seen.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

I have grown a lot since I have started at Travelbud. I have learnt a lot and really have enjoyed teamwork. I have really enjoyed helping applicants embark on their adventure abroad and really give them first- hand experience advice.

I love how Travelbud always strives to make everything easy and convenient for all our applicants.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

I think the best stories I have heard were from the students that went on the TESOL course with me. We were from all parts of the world, coming from different backgrounds, but we all decided to be there at the same time. I experienced many memories and just watching everyone grow and become closer was incredible.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I would love to do any of our volunteer programs, I am so excited that there are these new programs. My favorite one would definitely be the volunteer program in Zanzibar where I could help provide educational support to the community and experience a different culture. It would be amazing to stay on the beach and taste all the different food that the Island has to offer.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

Travelbud is unique as we always try and get to know our applicants and really see what the best program would be for them. I am excited to introduce more of our volunteer programs to our applicants so that they have a chance to experience Africa as well! I am proud of our team as we always try and work together and highlight each other strengths.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I feel that the biggest factor in being a successful company is having a collaborative and passionate attitude in all that you do. Being able to relate to each of our applicants and see what's best for them. It's also extremely important to be compassionate and always try and do your best. I feel that at Travelbud we try and do that every single day.
