I enrolled in this tefl course as I finished university last year and have been looking for something interesting to do.

One of the key points that caught my attention was the help with finding a job afterwards, and i’m happy to say that it has certainly lived up to my hopes. I passed the course last week and have already had a Skype interview with a school in China!

Now i’m currently waiting for the results, but feel like it went really well! As part of the interview I had to give a ‘demo class’ which involved the interviewer pretending to be a 12 year old child, and me having to teach them some language. It was quite strange and hard to keep a straight face at first, but Let’s TEFL helped me to prepare for this before hand and the school seemed happy with me.

I've just finished the 120 hour TEFL course. It's taken me several weeks of working quite intensively through the lessons each day. I wouldn't say it's especially difficult. Everything is really well structured and the lessons include lots of explanation and examples. However, there is quite a lot of content to work through.

I would suggest you set aside 2 hours per day to work through a whole module so that you get the whole picture of what's being taught in one go. So that would mean going through the whole module for teaching speaking to students, or the whole module for motivation techniques etc. I found this helped me keep working through them at a steady pace.

After finishing the lessons you face an assessment with two parts. The first part is a test which covers questions from each of the previous modules. It took about 40 minutes for me to complete. After that there's an assignment where you need to create a lesson plan and some classroom materials. I wasn't really looking forward to this part of the assessment but it was actually a lot of fun and now I can see how important it was to do.

My assessment was marked within 4 days and I received a pass, along with some feedback on how well I did and what I could have improved on.

After passing the TEFL course, there's also another course which opens up and contains a downloadable CV template with a guidance for teaching passing interviews and giving demo classes. The course staff have also reached out to me and have started to arrange some Skype interviews with schools in China. It seems there's some options available in Beijing with offers of around 14k chinese yuan / $2100 which is exciting so far.

I found this course was incredibly helpful, and would recommend it to any new teacher just like myself.

I haven't ever taught before, and was a little concerned about teaching, but it's something I've wanted to do for such a long time.

After finishing the course I now feel that I have a really strong foundation to handle a class for myself. I'm sure it will be a bit of a challenge to start with, but I know what will be expected of me as an ESL teacher, and I've studied a range of techniques and approaches to help things go smoothly, and to manage any problems that may arise.

I also found it especially helpful to learn about how to apply for teaching jobs, the different salaries available, and how to deliver a good impression through interviews/demo classes.

I found the course really easy to use, and appreciate how the lessons really explained different concepts and techniques clearly. It wasn't quite as difficult as I thought, but i've definitely learned a lot about teaching and how to run a class.

Now that i've finished the course i'm studying their additional job training course and have been discussing with their team to get ready for some skype interviews for some jobs in China. Thank you!!

Why did you choose this program?

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

They guided me when I had questions and doubts. They gave me their full support all throughout this journey - before I enrolled, while doing the program, even after I have received my TEFL Certificate. They weren't rude and were very helpful (even offering assistance when I'm not asking). They gave me additional notes and links to fully comprehend the lessons.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

You can never be too prepared or ready for something even if you think you've prepared yourself or even if you prepared long enough. I like to surprise myself. It's a lot more exciting to not fully know what's going to happen and learn it then and there, but that doesn't mean I didn't prepare beforehand. I'm also prepared, but I learned that you're only going to be skeptical about something if you expect too much or prepared yourself for something you were hoping for. So, expect the unexpected and just go with the flow.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

I did everything at my own pace and time, so I didn't really encounter that much of a problem. I studied three lessons 4 - 6 hours a day. After those three lessons, I would go back to see how much I've understood then I would answer the quizzes and homework. After I've finished all the lessons and took the final exam, I focused on finishing my final requirements and after I've done that and received my results, all my efforts and hard work paid off. It was all worth it!

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

I was afraid I wouldn't be able to handle change or meet new friends and not be able to fully enjoy. Of course, those were just fears that one can get over, which I did. Change is hard but inevitable. It was hard coping up at first, but eventually, as I accept change, it became easier. New faces suddenly became new friends and I certainly enjoyed every second of the experience. Just trust on your instinct, pray for guidance and assurance.

If you could do everything all over again, would you change anything?

If I could do it all over again, I wouldn't change anything. I'd do it over and over again. It's a learning experience filled with lessons and blessings. I just hope it'll help more and more people in the future. Besides, who says "no" to opportunities knocking? Certainly not the dream makers nor the dream catchers.

Justin grew up in the UK before taking a gap year in Asia. Or at least that was his plan… he's been living and working overseas for 8 years now, and has never looked back.

After spending several years teaching and developing English language courses for schools in China, Justin joined the Let’s TEFL team.

What is your favorite travel memory?

There’s too many to choose from! I was once teaching in Beijing and over Chinese New Year, the weather was freezing cold and everything had shut down for the holiday season. On a whim, I decided to book a flight to the Philippines and go snorkeling.

24 hours later and I was on a beach with a San Miguel and a snorkel. The water was crystal clear, full of fish and I even got to swim with a sea turtle. There was something that felt so free about being able to just grab your passport and go do it.

The only problem was that when I flew back to China at the end of the long weekend, my class found my snorkel-mask sunburn especially amusing, and decided to feature me in their drawings. The pictures were not flattering, but the trip was great.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

My previous jobs have mostly been in rather heavily structured companies with clearly defined hierarchies. I had some creative freedom, but it was always within very concrete boundaries.

With Let’s TEFL it’s much different. We’re encouraged to work on our own projects, and let our ideas come to life. If anyone has an interesting thought then we’re free to discuss and go for it.

In fact, I just got back from a trip to Guangzhou last week… that’s one of these projects that we discussed over coffee last month, and I’ve been able to go and put it into action. But you’ll have to wait and see what that was!

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

I was just talking with one of our course graduates this weekend and I couldn’t be happier for him. He landed in China a few days ago to do some traveling before starting his job placement.

Eight years ago I was in his shoes, and it was great to hear his first impressions - the people, the lights, the size of Beijing, the street food, the supercars, the rickshaws, etc. It’s hard to explain, but it’s a complete wave of new sounds and sights that you get to soak up.

There’s so much he’s going to learn in these next few days, weeks, and months. It’s such an exciting time and I know he’s going to love it.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

Our team brings over 15 years of teaching experience together. We’ve taught all over Asia, we’ve helped to develop classroom content used by schools, and we’ve been involved in the recruitment process for new teachers.

I'd say that this also works the other way around - as an employee if you’re not passionate about the company you work for, and if you’re only arriving each day to collect a paycheck on the way home, then you need to go find something you can really contribute to. We all deserve more from life than that.
