An experience everyone should have

As my time in Thailand comes to an end and I reflect on my placement with Gotoco, I find myself eager to share this experience with others.
The one universal reflection that I have found with Gotocoers is the appreciation for an experience we otherwise never would have gotten. Teaching with Gotoco offers travel, cultural exchange, school experience, and local excursions that plane old backpacking doesn’t afford you.
As a participant on the October Thailand Rural
School programme I had unique, and yes, sometimes difficult experiences.
I was welcomed by my school from the very first day. The students and Thai teachers were eager to meet me and made teaching such an enjoyable experience during my entire placement - even the cheeky students are respectful, funny, and a pleasure to teach.
Although teaching in a rural school can sometimes be boring in your free time, it’s easy to step just a little outside your comfort zone and get involved in the local school clubs and community. I had the pleasure of joining my schools badminton club - everyday after school I would attempt to play with the incredibly talented students and teachers - and even the schools director! It was an opportunity to interact with people on a more even field (not literally - I was very bad when I first started playing) and to let them see you as a person rather than a foreign teacher.
And you won’t be spending every day in your school! The Thai teachers go above and beyond to show you the best of what their town and province have to offer. I was taken to some beautiful temples and famous historical sites, as well as being treated to VIP status and traditional Thai dress at the local Loy Kratong festival.
But it’s also worth talking about the things that didn’t quite live up to expectations. Although Gotoco provide a funded opportunity that I wouldn’t change for anything, there were logistical and communication issues with coordinators that made things difficult at times. I often found that my Thai teachers would look to me for an answer to a question that we should have known (dates, travelling arrangements, programme expectations, etc.) but that we simply didn’t know - this was not communicated to us or to the Thai teachers acting as liaison.
That being said, my placement with Gotoco is one I believe every single person should get to experience. It helps you to grow as a person, build cultural tolerance and awareness, and make new friends from a part of the world otherwise inaccessible.

What was your funniest moment?
I would always play badminton at the school with the students and teachers. One day, the schools director came to join us. I played a game with him and it was the funniest moment I had at the school. We pretended to get really competitive and joking about beating each other at the game. A fantastic experience that gave me a good relationship with the school staff and students.
Pros
  • Confidence building
  • Long-lasting relationships
  • Seeing a part of Thailand that most travellers don’t experience
Cons
  • Can be lonely if you don’t get along with other participants
  • Rural programmes can be boring if you don’t make your own fun
  • Communication with programme coordinators isn’t great

Amazing time

I had an amazing time over the summer with gotoco in Thailand. It was an unforgettable experience that provided me with a chance to experience a new culture and create lasting friendships with the people I met, I can't recommend it enough!
It was very interesting to teach in a rural area in Thailand, I felt as if i was able to expereince a much more 'real' side of the country than i would've if i'd done the usual backpacking route or stayed in bangkok. The chance to then continue your travels after the programme had finished was a big plus!

What was your funniest moment?
The orientation week, being able to go out and experience Thailand with new friends provided endless laughs
Pros
  • Free travel and accomodation
  • Rewarding teaching children
  • New friends

Great experience in Colombia

I had a great time teaching in Colombia with Gotoco. I met amazing people, both the locals and others from the cohort, learnt so much about teaching, Colombian culture and Spanish and it was a great opportunity to travel all over the country as well as other parts of South America. It’s an experience that i’ll remember forever and am very great to have had the chance to travel and gain a qualification in such a budget friendly way! I would highly recommend to anybody looking to do something new!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My most nerve wracking moment was my first night when i arrived and didn’t know anybody. I overcame this my embracing the experience and soon realised everyone i was surrounded by were to become amazing friends.
Pros
  • travel
  • meeting new people
Cons
  • outside of your comfort zone
  • last minute changes

Amazing Immersive experience

I really enjoyed the induction week, it was great to get to know so many new people. The team ( Lucy, Jamie, Aislinn and Matty) were all so friendly and happy to answer any questions. It was a great balance between them being your friends and professionalism. I appreciate all the hard work they put in behind the scenes to answer our (many!) questions and queries.
The people at my host school were so lovely and would go out of their way to help us.
The students and teaching was great - it was amazing the amount of love they gave and a great taster of teaching in different countries.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
So many new foods - good and bad. You really get immersed... had rice in bamboo sticks, chicken blood, and so many dishes that I did not even fully know what they were.
Pros
  • met so many friendly people
  • great way to push yourself out your comfort zone
  • great to understand what its like to teach abroad
Cons
  • very rural experience
  • sometimes hard to go out and explore because of dogs

My 6 Months Living & Working In Bogota as 'Cultural Agent' and Exploring Colombia

From January to July 2023, I participated in a 6 months immersion programme in Bogota, Colombia, as a 'cultural agent' for a local NGO, YMCA Colombia. Part of my placement involved preparing and leading English-based activities in public and private schools around Bogota, as well as occasionally in universities and online. As a Gotoco 'repeater', I felt more familiar with some aspects of the adventure. Nonetheless, the jump outside of my comfort zone and into my 'learning zone' was real! While my previous programme (6 weeks immersion programme in Thailand in 2022) had felt very 'idyllic', and the 4 weeks of teaching passed in a breeze, this time around, the experience felt much more real-life, with its share of challenges and satisfactions (from overcoming the challenges). Once the integration phase was over (this is always really helpful, Gotoco is especially good at those imo), these 6 months really felt like I was living and working in Bogota. This involves everything that has to do with moving to a new country for a while: becoming familar with commuting, making friends with colleagues, office life with its learnings, building a social life, finding your favourite spots, creating new habits, wondering whether you'd see yourself staying longer... Without forgetting the opportunities for week-end and holiday trips! Something to mention is the support I received from the Gotoco staff, present in Colombia with us. When things were a bit challenging, it was nice to know there were people I could turn to, even if just to vent. In this sense, going to Colombia with Gotoco was a privilege given the network and structure it offers. It would have been much more challenging to do that on my own.

I would recommend this programme, or any 6-month+ immersion, to anyone looking to go on a slightly more challenging adventure. This is not to discourage you if it is your first time travelling alone abroad. If you are keen to get out of your comfort zone, are curious about other cultures and realities and are ready to deal with uncertainty and be flexible, you should go for it. As cliche as it sounds, going to Colombia was life-changing: it gave me the required work experience to apply to my current master's, gave me incredibly humbling insights into other realities (and into myself) and brought me the strongest relationships I have in my life.

What was your funniest moment?
The integration weeks were great for getting a taste of Colombia in the amazing coffee region, as well as the diverse activities organised. The trips to Laguna de Guatavita, Villa de Leyva, Salento, etc. as well as in Bogota were very appreciated!
The first week of integration at the placement (YMCA in my case) was great to get to know non-Gotoco participants. I also enjoyed the diversity of tasks that my placement entailed, which meant no week was similar to the other. Equally, I greatly enjoyed discovering the YMCA mindset, pedagogy and its lovely volunteers with whom I connected. The 2 YMCA camps I was able to join were undoubtedly a highlight. Equally, I had one opportunity to travel to Medellin during the Semana Santa holiday, and to San Andres island during one of the (many) long weekends Colombia boasts. All memorable highlights!
Pros
  • There is so much that can go right, beyond your expectations, if you bring the right mindset in!
  • An opportunity to learn about yourself through learning about others
  • You can get a qualification out of it. For free. Give the teaching experience a try, if anything you'll learn whether that is something you are good at and enjoy, and you might also develop a newfound respect for teachers!
Cons
  • Be careful with your bugdet management :)
  • Get comfortable with last minue changes, and unforeseen events. You will have to be flexible. However, don't hesitate to ask around if anything seems unclear, especially regarding your placement. Afterall, that's where you'll spend a lot of your time.
  • Be prepared to experience varying degreed of loneliness, and passing crises of 'why did I come here'?

One of the lifelong opportunities

I have spent two great months in bali with my fellow gotocoers, I was just as confused as some of you reading this, this gonna be a scam no? From the rather simple interview process till we met Dehmi, our pick up guy,a Indonesian man offered us cigarette in Bali airport as greeting, “wow, this is really happening”

There are three parts of this greatest summer of my life:
- teaching! As an education major, teaching has always been my passion, it was a great opportunity for me to acc use theories and pedagogies i leaned from textbooks, gonna say its pretty challenging especially with language difficulties but i enjoyed it so much, i still keep in touch with my students who sent me their English learning progress:)

- i met some great great people over there, the friendship aint fading away since we back to the UK

- the views! No caption needed ppl😭😭

Cons
  • You may spend slightly more than you expected
  • You can meet some mean people get ready for that

Gotoco China

Although program changes meant I ended up in Shanghai with a smaller group than expected this was the best outcome for me. I loved my time spent there and the freedom I had to explore the city on my own and to get to understand and experience the Chinese system, even just understanding their phone apps was interesting enough.

I felt supported throughout the entire process, and although there were certainly challenges, and I didn’t find the teaching easy, with support from the team and time I ended up really enjoying my time in the classroom!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would put more effort into learning some Mandarin before I came and familiarising myself with China’s app landscape, although this can be difficult without a Chinese number. Although ordering through apps even at restaurants is the norm, it is very helpful to have a basic understanding of the language and to be able to book a taxi or order a meal and would have made my time that much easier and more enjoyable.
Pros
  • Cultural exchange
  • Eating new foods
  • Getting teaching experience
Cons
  • Difficult work load
  • Language environment is challenging
  • Dealing with China’s closed off payments system

Itay TESOL funded programme experience

I recently had the incredible opportunity to participate in a fully funded program to teach English to non-native speakers in Italy, and my experience was nothing short of life-changing. From the enchanting landscapes to the warm hospitality of the locals, every aspect of my time in Italy left an indelible mark on my heart.

The program provided a unique platform for cultural exchange, allowing me to connect with Italian children eager to learn English. One of the most rewarding aspects was witnessing the students' enthusiasm and curiosity as they embarked on this linguistic journey with me. Their genuine interest in mastering a new language fueled my passion for teaching and made each class a joyous and fulfilling experience.

The Italian setting itself added an extraordinary layer to the teaching process. Nestled in the heart of the charming countryside, our classes were often held outdoors, surrounded by the beauty of rolling hills and historic architecture. This immersive learning environment not only captivated the students but also inspired a sense of wonder and creativity that transcended the confines of traditional classroom settings.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
One of the most surprising and delightful culinary experiences during my time in Italy was tasting "burrata" for the first time. Burrata is a fresh Italian cheese made from a mix of mozzarella and cream, resulting in a lusciously creamy interior. What made it particularly surprising was the unexpected burst of rich and velvety flavors as I cut into the outer shell. The contrast between the smooth, soft center and the slightly firmer outer layer was a taste revelation. Served with fresh tomatoes, basil, and a drizzle of olive oil, it became a memorable dish that perfectly captured the essence of Italian cuisine—simple yet incredibly flavorful. This experience opened my palate to the diverse and exquisite world of Italian cheeses, leaving me with a newfound appreciation for the country's culinary delights.
Pros
  • Cultural Immersion
  • Experience
Cons
  • Not long enough
