Free Summer TEFL Program across China

This was the greatest experience of my student life.
I got to teach English in China but also to discover the country and the culture. My camp placement was the perfect fit with my own interests. I was able to stay in two different places. The first one was Changsha and the second one was Beijing. I was able to visit a lot of tourist site in Beijing and experience the daily life of the capital. Meeting people from different backgrounds and countries was also great. I definitively gained a lot with this program. I learn a lot about teaching English as a foreign language, but also I feel way more confident.
Moreover, the extra week of holidays in Yangshuo is a must-do to meet other participants and exchange about everyone experiences. The area is known to be one of the most beautiful place in China, and it is!

What would you improve about this program?
Everything is well organised and planned. The only improvement will be to know about placement a bit earlier.

Hangzhou

I spent an amazing month in Hangzhou. Loved learning about the culture, the people and making new friends with my host family, coworkers and other GoToCo participants! The cultural excursions were absolutely incredible - it was amazing to go see the West Lake and Xianghu Lake in Hangzhou itself. I even got to go to Shanghai for a day which was great. As an experience, I’m so glad that it was so immersive - living with a host family was such a great way of learning how Chinese people live and appreciating their culture, customs and traditions. I even picked up a little bit of Chinese and the locals loved it when I tried to speak with them. Everyone was so friendly and I particularly enjoyed teaching - the atmosphere at the school was so fun and I looked forward to every day.

What was your funniest moment?
Accidentally eating a super spicy chilli in a restaurant and drinking water, expecting it to be cold but it was boiling hot and having to pretend like my tongue wasn’t on fire.

An amazing opportunity and experience

What an amazing summer!! I could not recommend this experience enough. I loved every second of this summer teaching in Yangshuo, especially aided by the fact that my leader was brilliant and made sure that alongside teaching we had the opportunity to do many fun and exciting activities, with the highlights being Tea Picking and a trip to XingPing. Teaching in China is often challenging but such a rewarding experience, and by the end I had really bonded with the children in my class. Living in such a small village in Yangshuo meant that I could fully immerse myself in Chinese culture, learning some Mandarin and living alongside the locals, becoming friends with several of them. The school itself was excellent; the food and accommodation provided were great and it was in a great location, only 15 minutes outside of Yangshuo centre. I feel that this opportunity is perfect for anyone who really wants to travel and become more independent, whilst gaining valuable teaching experience. I fully enjoyed my time in China and would recommend Gotoco to anyone.

What would you improve about this program?
If I had to mention one thing that could be improved, it would be the rapidity of emails; often, replies to emails took a long time which was difficult when the question in the email required a more immediate answer. This was particularly difficult during the Visa Application process, which I found to be quite stressful. Also, more information on what to expect in China and how best to travel there once you have arrived would have been helpful, as we found transport is very different to the UK and it was a huge culture shock in general when we first arrived. Having said this, when a response was given to emails, the leaders were more than helpful and provided you with all the answers and help you needed, making this a minor issue overall.

My time in Wuhan, China

I particularly enjoyed my time in China as the people leading my camp were really friendly and there was a good balance of indoor and outdoor activities. I loved meeting and forming good relationships with the children that I taught and with fellow volunteers. It is a trip that opens China to you and gives you the freedom to travel but also allows you to meet new people and improve your communication and leadership skills through teaching.

Make sure to take advantage of the free holiday in Yangshuo in southern China as it is a beautiful area with great nightlife. It is a great opportunity to relax after the weeks of teaching!

I am glad to say that I have made lots of new friendships along the way and had a great time exploring new parts of China. An amazing experience!

Gotoco Internship Experience

This experience has been added to one of my favorite travel experiences to date. I’ve always wanted to visit Asia as it is a culture I’m particularly interested in , so when I came across it immediately signed up. The application process was a bit long but understandable and completely worth it as I’ve met so many amazing people in a different environment.
I arrived with no expectations and was satisfied with the accommodation and help given. Hmm I also got to experience teaching life in Asia for future reference which was good for me to see . My highlights were being able to travel to others cities and realizing they all have their own unique vibe and history attached to it . It made me gain interest in my own African culture .Overall I would actually do this again .... and again .... oh and I would also recommend this to students anyone who isn’t afraid or is afraid either try it !

What would you improve about this program?
Would be cool if we had a representative with us at all times well at least a week lol . Was hard knowing who to turn to during emergencies sometimes

A Fantastic Opportunity!

Participating in one of this year's Gotoco camps was an excellent way to experience Chinese culture whilst also gaining valuable experience in the education sector. The teaching part of the trip provided unique insight into a culture far removed from that of my own, and was rewarding in terms of the relationships built with both the children and the other members of the Gotoco team at Guiyang. I was initially rather apprehensive about this trip having not travelled independently before, but it turned out to be an excellent opportunity to gain independence and confidence. The final week of the trip, spent in the picturesque surroundings of Yangshuo, Guangxi, was equally enjoyable. Overall, I was very satisfied with my experience in China and I would certainly recommend the Gotoco programme to others.

What would you improve about this program?
The application process was initially quite straightforward, with the interviews easy to organise and complete. The process of obtaining a visa was, however, rather difficult and time-consuming.

An amazing opportunity

My time in China was one I will never forget. The staff at the school were so friendly and helpful, the students were great and the experience of teaching has really made me consider it as a profession. China is a fascinating country - the landscape was beautiful, the locals I met were all so welcoming and it was very interesting to see how day-to-day life works in developing China. I know I’ll be coming back to this country again. I would thoroughly recommend this experience, especially with Gotoco, a reliable company who provide this experience for free! Great Experience and TEFL qualification too!

I had a really good experience with the company gotoco. The application process was really easy and I got placed within 2 weeks of applying which was great as my decision to do the program was very last minute. I was a really interesting way to spend my summer whilst having my accommodation and meals paid for. The TEFL certificate you get at the end of your placement is what really attracted me to the program, it looks really good on your CV and opens doors to future job opportunities. I also gained invaluable experience in teaching and managing a classroom full of children. The trip to Yangshuo at the end was truly the icing on the cake- activities where organised everyday and you were put on a big group chat so that you can meet othet gotogoers. It was super easy to make new friends there.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Spicy chicken neck. Our boss came up to us as we were relaxing outside of the hotel one night and offered us the chicken neck and described it as a sausage. It was a very funny moment.
