Purple Program - Ghana

Villagers and locals were friendly and welcoming. All the staff at the house were really nice. Credit to Benedict, Joe, Michael ( security guard) Millie & Rita ( cooks) & Evans who all tried their best to make sure everyone was comfortable as possible. Lovely people.

On arrival it would be nice to have a quick run down/ tour of the volunteer house by either Joe/ Evans to make sure new volunteers are settled/ aware of what is expected during the program and of the rules/ running of the house.

Future new volunteers please bring as much medical supplies such as gloves bandages, antiseptic cream, gauze etc because it runs out quickly. Lots of Hand gel and even hand soap for washing of your hands is useful to bring as well. Extra money is needed because day trips are not included in the program fees paid. In regards to donations, bring as much as you can because sending things to Ghana if you live very far away is a bit tricky and gets expensive so try to bring as much as you can. You may feel a bit nervous going to the program alone for the first ever time but honestly you will be well taken care of and looked after by all the people involved in the program. Stay safe and have a lovely time!

Overall, it was an invaluable experience and I am looking forward to coming back to Frankadua in a few years time.

What would you improve about this program?
A bit more organisation is needed I think. If meetings are scheduled on a certain day/ time it would be nice for them to happen on that day/ time. It would be nice to have the preparation for the malaria outreaches to be done the nice before to ensure everything is ready for the next day - i.e filling of the forms, making sure enough malaria kits are packed, gloves etc.

Ghana 2019

This was my first time traveling and IVHQ made it very easy.
My 4 week experience in Ghana was amazing! I was placed in the purple program in Frankadua, everyone there were super welcoming and friendly. There was never a moment in Ghana were I felt unsafe. The accommodations provided were simple but luxurious compared to most locals. I volunteered to help teach, but was also able to participate in the agriculture program as well as the malaria and wound outreaches. The IVHQ staff in Ghana were all very supportive, especially Evans as he will tell you "your wish is my command."
The Cape Coast weekend trip is very well planned out, and a must do while in Ghana.
All in all, this program is a great experience I would recommend it to anyone with an open mind as the culture is very different then what we you be use to.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have tried more of the local cuisine, as most of our meals were very americanized.

Life changing experience!

I joined the volunteering program in Ghana for two weeks in February and I must say it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I chose Childcare and Teaching as my main focus throughout my stay in Ghana but was very lucky to also be able to join medical teams during their malaria testing outreaches and wound treatments in nearby rural villages. The two programs happened to be in close proximity and therefore allowed volunteers to join forces and work together more closely. The program as such is very well organized in all it’s aspects such as daily activity planning, accommodation or weekend trips. I would highly recommend joining this program if you want to experience real Africa! Big shout out to Joe and Evans for being awesome program coordinators and just amazing people always happy to help. Two weeks definitely wasn’t enough for me. Can’t wait to be back!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be ready for conditions that you might not be used to back in your country such as no running water, power outages or bucker showers. It took me a day or two to completely adjust but once you do, it all seems so natural and I wouldn’t change a this about it! After all, TIA - This Is Africa!

Ghana Feb 2019

This experience was amazing. I went in with an open mind and limited expectations as suggested in the program guide and I was happily surprised. The country was amazing. The people were wonderful. The coordinators I was in contact with were Joe and Evans. They were both great and Evans took charge in making sure we were always taken care of and I truly appreciate that. I loved the flexibility of assisting in other programs when appropriate. It made the entire experience much more valuable for me and for the community too I feel. Having the opportunity to explore on our own over the weekends also allowed us to explore the culture of the country and see what beautiful landmarks Ghana had to offer. The only thing I would have changed about my trip is the duration of my stay. 2 weeks went by in the blink of an eye. I would absolutely recommend this program to anyone interested in it.

What was your funniest moment?
Taking a bucket shower for the first time in my life. I imagined how my friends at home would react, and with many of them entirely dependent on modern ammeneities I couldn’t help but laugh as I went through it the first time.

IVHQ Ghana

I had a great experience with IVHQ Ghana as a medical volunteer for 4 weeks. We focused on outreach initiatives including malaria testing and wound care. I felt that my work really made a difference. I met people from all over the world who had the same compassion and drive to help others. Our trip leaders always ensured we were enjoying ourselves and doing what we wanted to do in terms of projects. I got to work with the kids at an evening class we held Monday through Friday from 4-5 at a local school. Even though I came as a medical volunteer I got to volunteer in so many different ways. I also got to work with volunteers who came to teach but were interested in wound care and malaria outreach. One of the volunteers decided he wants to go into medicine when he returns home because of his experiences with IVHQ. I’ve only been back home 2 days and I am already brainstorming ways to go back.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Don’t expect to change the world in one trip. Be open and help in any way you can. Take in all of the new experiences. Learn the local language. Try new foods. Make friends with everyone you meet. You will have these memories for a lifetime.

Evans is the rock of the purple programme

I did a month of volunteering in frankadua in January. Initially I was placed on the pink programme which if I was reviewing that experience wouldn’t be the best, there was no support when I was there other than a phone call I took on another volunteers phone and I didn’t see any security outside any night out of the four I stayed. HOWEVER.. after a few complications and speaking with Evans while on the cape coast tour, this was immediately dealt with and I was transferred over to the purple programme to start a fresh journey. I hd an amazing journey while being there, and not only myself but I would say all the others in my group would definitely agree when I say Evans gave us the best support, guidance and advice while being over in Africa. He made sure our time was spent the best way it could while encorporating every part of the culture and embracing our own differences too. If Evans wasn’t on our programme I believe my experience would have been much different. EVANS FOR PRESIDENT ☺️😂 Thank you for such an amazing time IVHQ... I hope to visit again x

What would you improve about this program?
When volunteers get sent to there placement village, they should have an orientation on arrival to be made to feel comfortable in the new environment. This doesn’t apply to every course as purple this did happen however pink it did not.

Ghana Childcare

I thought IVHQ did a very great job at preparing me for my journey abroad. Without knowing a whole lot about Africa, the people, the culture and the volunteer trip as a whole, they really helped to get a good sense of what it would be like and what I was to except. Once I arrived in Ghana, the local staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. However there was a little miscommunication on airport pick up. I never once felt unsafe while there and if there was an issue IVHQ did their best to resolve it. I would have liked a little bit more structure and organization with the program I was in, once in my placement. We had a few basic jobs, but I would have liked to do more to make an impact on the people/ kids. I loved working in childcare because the kids made it for me. Their love and happiness was infectious and because of it changed my life! I would definitely travel with them again!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have definitely liked to stay longer. I did the 2 week program and It was way too short. I know I want to return sometime soon and do more for the children I worked with. Possibly teach more or do some kind of construction project for them.

My three months in Ghana

My three months in Ghana through IVHQ were unforgettable, life changing and worth every penny. The staff made sure that we everyone was comfortable while experiencing new skills and adventures, all of which were interesting and enjoyable. The online team are helpful even before you arrive and offered advice on all aspects including what to take, how to sort visas out and ensuring that any concerns I had were diminished before I left. On arrival finding the friendly member of staff who was there to pick us up was relatively easy in the crowded and hectic airport. Orientation was well organised and informative with a language lesson from a brilliant member of staff named Evans who is one of the most hardworking and dedicated members of the team. He is also in charge of arranging malaria testing for the children in schools and local people. Evans encourages everyone to come and test people in towns, as not only is it an interesting and good experience it is also a wonderful skill to learn and gives those with malaria a fighting chance (as we also distributed medication too) .
On weekends trips were arranged. In my time there I did a few, including Cape Coast, Twi Waterfalls and Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary. Arranged by Elvis and Evans, these trips were well organised with enough flexibility for it to be massively enjoyable while also interesting and informative, allowing us to experience new things we may never have experienced otherwise. The trips were affordable and the accommodation comfortable, clean and in a good location.
The accommodation (in the purple program in Frankadua) I had been in during the weekdays was comfortable, accommodating, in a good location- about 2 hours from the capital city of Accra- and had wonderful food provided by the fantastic cook Rita. While the facilities were basic, the charm and homely feeling you get if you have an open mind allows you to settle quickly. The program offers a wide range of options on what to do from day to day. Spanning from teaching to agriculture with enough flexibility and support to do something different from day to day or week to week.
Of course I can't put how incredible my experience was into words, but I would recommend this life changing chance to anyone and everyone in a heart beat and I'm so grateful to everyone, especially those i have name for ensuring my time there was used constructively through enjoyable, breathtaking and eye opening moments, as well as supporting me through every moment.
