About Program

Our nonprofit organisation called Hekima is a daycare centre for street children. We work on their cases with the main goal of reuniting them with their families and enrolling them back in school or finding them a suitable apprenticeship to ensure their basic needs.

Our daily work includes family tracing, various activities with the children, classes, medical care and fundraising. Furthermore, we do street visits to connect new children with Hekima and stay in touch with the street youth. The ‘Zero to Hero’ project is targeting a sustainable future for the youth. Our organisation is constantly evolving and takes up new projects on the way. Such as building a our own centre for the children to live there permanently.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here.

Program Highlights

  • You can fully experience the Tanzania culture and society by living in a local family, working with street children and visiting different events.
  • By engaging directly with the children and working on their cases from start to finish, you can really see your efforts paying off.
  • In this program you have a lot of room for your own ideas and projects.
  • Based on the size of our organisation we interact a lot with the children and the whole team.
  • Due to the perfect size of Bukoba Town you can build your own network during your stay here.

Program Impact

In the streets of Bukoba there are living around 200 boys. These boys are exposed to danger and risks every day. Hekima provides them with a safe place, food and medical aid. Together with the children, the families and social welfare we plan a sustainable future for them.
