About Program

Indo Ocean Project was founded by marine biologists and dive professionals to create a high level training and ecological monitoring program in the heart of the coral triangle.

Our field expeditions in Indonesia hosts research projects focused on marine mega fauna, coral reef conservation, and marine policy. The aim of the Indo Ocean Project is to generate high quality scientific data to inform local mangers and stakeholders about the status of Marine Protect Areas (MPA), and to increase marine conservation awareness among the local communities and general public. We combine our research project with a dive master internship program to allow aspiring marine researchers or dive professionals to gain hands on experience in a professional environment while completing several internationally recognized certifications.

You don't need to be a diver or scientist to apply! Join one of our project locations in Nusa Penida (Bali), Bira (Southern Sulawesi) or Raja Ampat (West Papua).

Best project there is

This project is perfect for anyone with a passion for marine life. Personally it was my first step into the conservation world and I couldn’t have imagined it better. You get to work with badass professionals on a daily basis. I’ve learned so many skills and acquired so much knowledge that it’s hard to believe I’ve only spent 10 weeks there. You’re part of a big family of about 10 interns from all backgrounds and countries. A typical day consists of 1 or 2 dives (during which you will do heaps of research and and assisting tourists), combined with a workshop. After a busy day you get plenty of time to relax, explore the island or try the local delicacy “Joss”... Only one way to find out what it is ;) Whether you’re a marine biologist looking for an amazing place to do your research or an inexperienced ocean lover like me, the Indo Ocean Project’s got it all!

IOP is the best!!!

I was with Indo ocean project for about 3 months in 2018. After I graduated from college I wanted to travel while also doing conservation work and scuba diving. From the very beginning, Lauren was constantly in touch with me answering any and all of my many questions. She made the entire process of traveling overseas much smoother. The program itself absolutely exceeded my expectations. The location was amazing, the people were friendly and the experience unmatched. I did so much more diving than I ever expected, racking up around 100 dives in 2.5 months. I believe what you get out of this experience is well worth the cost and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Participating in this program sparked my interest in marine conservation and now I’m getting my masters degree in it!

Exciting Research Project, Welcome to my Paradise!

I was part of the first group of volunteers coming into IndoOcean Project. It was very well organised from the beginning, Lauren was available to answer all my questions regarding the operation of the project. She made sure to create a fun and learning atmosphere among the team and was always enthusiastic to share her passion about The Ocean. I met great people during the 4 months I stayed at IOP and will never forget this experience.
The pristine water and marine life around Nusa Penida makes the Dive Master Training even more perfect, there are also a lot to see on land during days off.
It has been a year since I left and I keep noticing how much the project has grown. The people working there are passionate, enthusiastic and dedicated to the marine world and I'm really happy to have been part of it.
