Interning and Living in London; The Global City

The CAPA London Internship Program is a great opportunity for students to gain international internship experience. There are placement options for students of all majors. The professional connections and skills gained through my experience were invaluable to my professional development. Participating in CAPA's internship program is vital to one's cultural immersion in London. Due to the fact that students live and take classes with other American students, aside from interacting professors and those you meet on the street, the relationships students form with their coworkers will be their best exposure to British culture. If you are looking to only take classes, I recommend studying abroad at a university in London, not with a study abroad only program, like CAPA. Living in London allows students to observe the vast cultural differences in London. You can turn the corner and feel like you are in a different country. Classes are immersed in study abroad. Students can take theater classes that include excursions to see plays and tour theaters on the West End. Additionally, the Analyzing and Exploring London class allows students to gain first-hand knowledge of the issues Londoners have been faced with past and present. Living conditions are far superior to those of other students living in London. Apartments are spacious and are cleaned once a week by a cleaning service. I had the opportunity to live in Camden Town, a bustling center of counter culture. There was always something to do; there is access to eateries, a supermarket, a pharmacy, a cell phone service, and the infamous Camden Market is right around the corner. The social life in London was great. There is plenty of time to explore the pubs and go clubbing on the weekends. The CAPA London student council puts on great social events, such as a boat party on the River Thames. I met some great friends through my time at CAPA London. Overall, I would give CAPA London a 9/10. I really had a great experience. I learned a lot and have a ton of fond memories. I would not trade my study abroad experience for the world.

What would you improve about this program?
One way in which I feel that CAPA can improve their program would be to increase communication with students prior to their departure from the United States for London. I really feel like I had no clue what exactly the program entailed until I was there.

Best Decision Ever

The bus trips were the favorite part of the trip for me. The staff at CEA shared so much of their knowledge with us & made my experience even better. Getting to go on weekend trips with them helped me learn more than I would if i was traveling alone. Take advantage of the staff being there to help! Ask them questions! The more you ask the more you are going to lean on your trip! Don't be afraid to try & explore with your friends. It is a great opportunity to just walk around Dulbin & try to find your way around. You will see things that you haven't seen before. The more you explore, the more comfortable you will feel as the trip continues. When you get there, find places to get groceries around your apartment to make sure you know where to go if you need anything. Lastly, don't sit around in your apartment. I know you're going to be tired, but you don't want to regret not taking all the opportunities you could to see other places.

What would you improve about this program?
The one thing I would want changed is the living condition. The location & apartments were nice except for the fact that they were not cleaned very well.

When In ROME..

Pizza, soccer, gelato (ice cream), history, wine, coffee, croissants, art, and The Pope are a few of the many things you will enjoy about this eternal city! You will NEVER be bored in Rome! If you can imagine Rome to be beautiful by the few things you see in the movies then be ready to fall in love with the other majestic parts about the city that the movies do not show! The food is irresistible (and inexpensive), there are two soccer teams that share the same stadium, and you will meet friendly people who are willing to share their love for the Italian capital. No matter your major, language, or interests, you are bound to fall in love with Rome for everything that it has to offer!

What would you improve about this program?
Access to a library that does not close early and a gym!!

Just Go!

The first day I arrived, I was completely exhausted. I could not believe I had traveled over 20 hours and was FINALLY in Spain. Speaking of 20 hours of travel, I caught some sort of bug on the plane, which left me hanging out with the toilet, rather than fun Spanish friends, my first night in my new home. Despite my unfortunate illness, my three and half months abroad were more than I ever could have hoped for. I learned more Spanish in three and a half months than I ever did back home, the people were so kind and welcoming and it was so humbling to learn about not only the Spanish culture, but also about my own culture from a new perspective.

What would you improve about this program?
I would recommend better communication between the program and the students hosts. Although I had a great experience with my hosts, there were a few incidents that I wished the people in charge of housing had been a little more proactive in helping.

BCN

I had the most amazing time abroad, especially while being enrolled in the CEA program in Barcelona! The people I met, places I traveled, and the over experience was something I will never forget! Not only was the location perfect, but the program was even more amazing, all the teachers are very personable and there as confidants and someone to lean on if you're ever feeling homesick. The program sets up some super fun excursions as well that help enrich your overall experience! My favorite was attending the FCBarcelona futbol game and traveling to Madrid with all of my friends in the program (and its all paid for which is even better). Overall, I loved everything Barcelona and CEA had to offer and would go back in a heart beat if I could!

What would you improve about this program?
The housing situation was not my favorite, it is somewhat of a hit or miss with the living quarters and where you are located. I, unfortunately, was placed in a location that was a 30 min. metro ride or an hour walk from campus. So if I could change anything different about my experience it would be to live in a more central area.

Find yourself by getting Lost

One of the best decisions I've made in my life was to study abroad with CEA. I travelled abroad my Freshman summer through CEA without knowing a single person with the purpose of experiencing a whole new country without having any kind of comfort. I met each of my roommates and classmates without them having any predisposition or bias of the kind of person I was. I become very close to my roommates that I was able to socialize and connect with them to a level that you couldn’t in no other circumstance besides studying abroad would you be able to get to know someone. I took international marketing where we analyzed case studies and presentations that focused mainly on the global business environment where I was able to improve my understanding of globalization and improved on my professional skills. I learned a lot about myself and how genuine and fundamentally good of a person that I was, through the lenses of complete strangers. That alone was a life changing and forever memorable conception that I hold deeply to this very day.

What would you improve about this program?
I wish my apartment was a little closer to class, it was about a 15 minute subway ride away.

An Experience of a Lifetime: Loving London

There is something about London that completely captivates you, body and soul. Every student falls in love with their study abroad city, but I can honestly say it's rare to find people who love their city as much as Londoners. From the food to the music, the art to the architecture, there is always something to see or do in London. The CEA On-Site Director, Cassandra, makes studying in London both fun and educational.

They say that when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life. It couldn't be more true.

What would you improve about this program?
The price of the program is a little steep, even though I still believe studying with CEA in London was worth all the money in the world.

Great experience, would definitely recommend!

Upon deciding to study abroad, I constantly wondered what the living situations would be like, what the difficulty of the classes were like, how I would adjust to being in a foreign country, and how I would manage without knowing very much French. Luckily, the staff at CEA really helped me with my pre departure process and were able to answer ALL the questions that I had (and there were many).
Once in Paris, CEA prepped all their students during the first week after arrival. They shared a lot of advice and gave us do's and don'ts so we knew what to expect while being abroad. Until the very last day of my program, I remembered every little detail of information they shared with us because it was so helpful.
I opted for a shared apartment and it exceeded all expectations I had. The apartment was more spacious than I was expecting it to be. Although I should have packed lighter for my time abroad, we were still provided plenty of space for all of our belongings.
Classes are typically Monday through Thursday, which gives you enough time to take weekend trips to other cities like Barcelona, London, and Rome! Weekend travel trips were always very exciting! One of my favorite parts of my semester abroad was traveling with the group of girls that I met through my program. We got to experience different cities, cultures, and foods together. The excursions that the program offers were fun and it was nice to use that opportunity to get to know other people in my program!
I never envisioned that I would want to live anywhere except for Los Angeles, but studying abroad has definitely encouraged me to think globally, not locally! Sounds cheesy, but it's true. CEA challenged me in so many ways and I can't wait to see what the future has in store for me!

Life-changing

From the moment my plane landed, to the final dinner night, I was supported and guided by staff throughout. They were constantly available and more than willing to help with any question, whether academic or not.

I felt incredibly safe in Dublin. Though I wouldn't recommend it, I wasn't bothered once while walking home alone on a weekend night.

Though the housing was very different from what an on-campus American accommodation is like, I loved it. There were some struggles with the different heat and electricity systems, but everything was worked out by our school's administration.

In terms of academics, I was completely blown away by the difference. Instead of being drilled with daily assignments, weekly terminology quizzes, and giant textbooks, I learned hands-on application in my field. I felt more prepared by the classes I took in Dublin than the past year and a half at my American school.

Unforgettable Experience

Barcelona with CEA was a trip I will never forget, and one that I wish I could relive every single day. CEA was incredibly prepared, helpful, and truly wanted its students to have the best time. From a pickup at the airport to planned excursions to helpful advise on places to go, CEA was always ready and willing to help with anything you could possibly need. The excursions were super fun, and basically everyone went on the trip together to Valencia! It's more than just what CEA did though - it's the people they brought together. Through CEA, I got to meet other students that I never would've met otherwise, as we all went to different schools throughout the United States. I met and bonded instantly with these incredible people, and I have CEA to thank for that. There is so much to do in Barcelona and I swear I probably averaged 4 hours of sleep a night because I wanted to visit and participate in everything!

What would you improve about this program?
The only improvement, which would be difficult to do so I understand that it's most likely not possible, would be to have all the students live together in the same building.
