Amazing Study Abroad 2015 spring

Prior to studying abroad I'd been to Europe once before to visit some family in Berlin but other that I had never done anything like this. Studying abroad was the most liberating experience I've had in my life so far. I was living in spain for five months thanks to the early start liberal arts , Madrid program through CEA. Upon arrival I was greeted by the CEA team with warm signs and smiles. We spent the first day and night getting oriented but the program took off quickly and soon we were in our new homes. I was taking spanish classes at the Nebrija University and the staff there were so friendly and understanding of our journey as american foreign exchange students. Overall it was a wonderful experience. I was very scared before I left because i didn't really know what to expect and although there was an itinerary I was always looking for more details. That's part of the experience though, some parts you will only know once you've done them. I remember trying to research what the metro will be like since in my city (Baltimore) we barely have one. Our CEA representatives took us to the metro as a group and explained to us how it worked and what to do and instantly my reservations fell away.I later found out that this wasn't a feature of all the programs studying in my university so we were fortunate to have that kind of guidance. If that isn't enough the shopping was spectacular. We arrived right after new years so there were many sales to take advantage of. Our CEA reps were even so kind as to send us tips on which areas would be nice for us to explore and go shopping. They were like our spanish parents for those of us who decided not to do a homestay. They set us tips about great places to eat and things to do. If we ever felt sad of were not feeling well they were a simple call away.

What would you improve about this program?
If I had to say one thing to be improved I'd say it would be nice if we could take classes with other spanish students. There were spanish students in the building we studied in but they didn't take our classes. I'd like to have the option to take some classes with them.

Take the leap down under!

I did the CAPA program Fall 2015. The program was well put together and organized, and really nothing went wrong. Everyone was professional and helpful both in the US and abroad, which put me at ease being abroad and being in the program. I went with CAPA because of the opportunity to intern abroad in my major. I had a great placement at a physiotherapy office where I learned a lot. The included excursions we had were hiking in the Blue Mountains, a wildlife walkabout park, and going to a Rugby game! All were really fun and there were no hidden fees in them. I hear there's a new excursion with an overnight experience at Taronga Zoo- that sounds so awesome! I also really appreciated the included transportation pass. For anyone interested in interning abroad I strongly recommend CAPA Sydney as they matched everyone in relevant internships and check in to make sure everything is going well, and in the end you could get a great recommendation for jobs/grad school.

What would you improve about this program?
I think the areas of improvement could be covering the cost to get to the apartments from the airport when you arrive, and some kind of food budget. I think they had one in years prior and I wish it was still in existence since then students with scholarships could receive food money included in that.

Where I fell in love with life

To say it was an amazing experience would not do my memories justice. The friendly staff, the cafes, the candy, the vino & pivo, the goulash, the farmers markets, the soccer matches at the beer gardens, the classes & teachers, the trains, the art, the graffiti, the excursions, the weekend trips, the bridge, the clock tower, old town center, the peacocks in the park. There was not a moment I wasn't in love.

What would you improve about this program?
The only thing I can think of would be to have more classes/variety of classes available!

CEA-Berlin, Germany

Spending the summer in Berlin with CEA is the best decision I've ever made! The classes were not too challenging and there were several field trips for a more hands-on experience with what we were learning. There were lots of cultural excursions included with CEA and with Berlin School of Economics and Law, including to many of the monuments in Berlin, day trips to Potsdam, Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, and a weekend trip to Prague. Berlin is an amazing, beautiful, fun city full of history. There is always something to do. It is a great place if you want to enhance your German skills as there are students and residents from all over the world, but classes at BSEL are taught in English and it is easy to get around using English and very little German if you go there without knowing any German like I did! Berlin is also a very cultural city, with all sorts of food, and it is still relatively cheap compared to other European cities!

What would you improve about this program?
There is nothing I would really change about this program - I like how it was a 4 week program and fit easily into my summer, but looking back I would love if it could have been longer so I could've spent more time in Berlin!

It was an unique experience

I was lucky enough to manage my class schedule into two days, therefore I traveled almost every weekend domestically and every other week to another country. Friends I made are the ones who made my time special. Classes in Skema was not challenging but it was very easy to fall off track because the teaching style is different than the U.S, especially the lecture duration.
The accommodation was great, location was great, we got many field trips to experience local culture and interact with locals and of course food!

An Unforgettable Experience

Granada, Spain truly stole my heart the minute I stepped off the airplane. This city immediately welcomed us with open arms. Right when you get through baggage claim, you will see one of the fabulous CEA faculty members who will greet you and lead you to the bus. They were extremely friendly and put us at ease immediately. I remember taking the bus and being in complete awe with the scenery surrounding me. When we got to the center of the town, we unloaded the bus and met our host family. My host mother grabbed me right away and started hugging and kissing me. The Spanish love to show their affection and it honestly made me feel so welcome and wanted immediately. My host mom also always called me Guapa which means beautiful. If you ever need a moral boost, just start a conversation with a Spanish woman :)

The city is only about the size of St. Paul, Minnesota so it was extremely easy to navigate. Granada not only houses the University of Granada which is a prestigious University but it also is home to the largest second language university which is where we attended. With this being said, the city has an incredibly young atmosphere due to all the college students! This makes the social scene a blast because there is always deals for college students so it was incredibly cheap to go out at night or go on various excursions beyond what is provided with CEA.

With CEA we went on multiple in country excursions along with one out of country excursion. In country we were able to travel to Seville, Cordoba, Malaga, Ronda, and Nerja. Our out of country excursion was Morocco, Africa. This excursion was truly incredible because we were able to go to a different country and continent. Morocco resembles much of the Arabic culture that has been left behind in Granada. We were also able to ride camels which was such an incredible experience!

As I stated before, Granada has incredible architecture that was influenced by the Arabic culture. One of the most historic pieces is the Alhambra which is a palace that was built in the 13th century. It is such an incredible piece of architecture and strikes you with awe each time you look at it. Granada is in the south of Spain so it is extremely beautiful and mild, for a Chicagoan, all times of the year. When I landed in January it was around 40-50 degrees and when I left in May it was around 90 degrees every day. This city is perfectly situated where you can take an hour bus ride to go skiing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains or a two hour bus ride to go swimming in the Mediterranean Sea.

One of the best things about Granada is there are free tapas. You heard me right... FREE!!! Every time you go out and order a drink, you get free food. The best place to go is La Bella y La Bestia! They have a ton of locations in the city and they give you so much delicious food! The night life in Granda is also incredible. There are so many clubs in the city that offers various environments. Mae West is the biggest and the most elaborate. They have multiple clubs in one and it is an absolute blast. Camborio is on the smaller end but has a lot of outdoor areas that overlook the Alhambra at night. There are many more and they always have great deals!

My experience in Granada has shaped me for the rest of my life. I was able to make friends that will last me a lifetime. We will forever share a bond over a love of Granada. I was also able to learn a lot about myself. While you are there, you need to embrace every moment and embark on as many opportunities as you can. If you go to Granada, you will have an incredible family, CEA, that will support you and help you along the way!

Florence in the Fall

This past fall was the best 3 months of my entire life. Studying with CAPA in Florence, Italy could not have been better. I learned an extreme amount about myself, the world, different cultures, ways of life, and traveling. I have never been out of the country before this, or even away from home, so this was a huge move for me. I had to start my adult life in a completely new country, and different type of culture. I learned a lot from the way the Italians live. For instance, I learned not to be in such a rush all the time, sip and thoroughly enjoy my coffee, respect my elders, and just truly live. Being with CAPA was amazing, my apartment was incredible and right in the heart of the city, and very close to my fellow classmates. Plenty of cafes, shops, museums, the school, historic landmarks, and nightlife all within walking distance. Over my 3 months I got to travel to 7 different countries, and make unbreakable lifelong friendships.

What would you improve about this program?
The only thing I would have to say that this program could improve on is making sure their emergency line is always manned. There was one instance we needed immediate help and we didn't hear back from them for a little while. Everything turned out okay, but we could have benefitted from a timelier response.

The Best Experience of My Life!

I spent the summer studying at the Berlin School of Economics & Law. Berlin is so diverse and it's so easy to feel at home there! CEA's support throughout the study abroad process was excellent. It was such a relief not having to worry about finding housing, enrolling in the school's program, or buying my own transportation pass! In addition to having group activities during the week (bus tours, waltz dancing lessons, sightseeing), our program also included a weekend trip to the Czech Republic. Our onsite specialist Kristin was amazing and always helped us with anything, whether we were feeling sick and needed to see a doctor or if we were looking for new restaurant recommendations. CEA's Summer Program in Berlin is absolutely the experience of a lifetime and I wish I could do it all over again!

What would you improve about this program?
Everything about the program was great--my only recommendation is to make it a little longer...4 weeks just went by so fast! There are so many things to do and see in Berlin, and I felt that a few extra weeks would have been great.

Discovery of true paz y pura vida

Pura vida! Studying abroad was something I knew I wanted to do before starting college; I also knew that I didn't want to get behind by doing so. As a pre-medical Biology major, it was a challenge to find a program that offered Biology classes. After a little searching the web,I found CEA. I was so amazed with the strength of the pre-departure help. CEA matched me up with an amazing host family and roommates. CEA's San Jose staff was such a blessing and invaluable tools throughout my semester (helped with activities in the capital and around CR). The Medical Spanish course was great, and I was able to use it there while I volunteered at the Nacional Hospital de Los Ninos (done thru CEA). I am proud to be a CEA alum; my semester would not have been as amazing w/out CEA.

The Best 4 Months of My Life

The CEA program helped to make my study abroad experience as positive as it was. I had never been out of the United States before in my life, and the CEA staff helped me to transition into the Florence living as easily as possible.

The classes were not the regular business classes I was used to taking back at Penn State, but that is why they were so interesting. The classes helped immerse me into the amazing culture that was surrounding me, and the topics taught were very captivating. For example, the Fashion Marketing class taught me insights into the marketing world that I never would have known otherwise, all while being able to take included field trips to places such as Luisa via Roma, Miu Miu, and the Gucci Museum. My Italian teacher, Martina, was there to help with whatever I needed, while making it fun to learn Italian with songs (that I still sing to this day), and took her classes on field trips to local artisans and the market for practice.

The CEA staff is not only concerned about your safety and learning, but they also make sure the experience is fun and memorable. With provided trips to multiple cities around Italy, delicious traditional meals, welcoming lunches and goodbye dinners, we knew we were lucky to have chosen CEA. I made lifelong friends with people from schools all over the country, had the best food I'll ever have in my life, learnt a beautiful language, and experienced a brand new culture, all in a very short 4 months.
