CEA Capa Seville

The CEA Capa Seville team is truly dedicated to creating a meaningful abroad experience for all students. The program offers classes at CEA Capa's education center in the center of the city while also allowing students to take courses at one of three local universities in the city. This gave us all a "home base" while also letting us engage with our host city in a very meaningful way. This also gives students an incredibly versatile list of courses/tracks to choose from. The program in Sevilla is moldable to any students needs.

My time with CAPA/CEA in Barcelona

I have to give judos to the CAPA/CEA team for helping me through my first two weeks in Barcelona during my Spring 2023 semester. I had lost my phone, and it was surprising how quick my mom was able to get ahold of a representative in the early morning hours. CAPA/CEA helped me with the recovery process of my phone as much as possible. Beyond this, I liked the overall cultural learning concepts of my classes. Perhaps it was because of my communication major, but I enjoyed how all of my classes tied the differences in culture to the class concepts being taught. I also enjoyed taking advantage of the day trips provided by CAPA/CEA. It was a good introduction to smaller less touristy spots with the added bonus of having knowledgeable guides. I liked talking about the history a lot when I was in Tarragona, for example.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was when I bought a pillow from an Asian fast food restaurant. I began to frequent a cheap Asian food restaurant that was close to the CAPA/CEA center and got to know a couple of the people that worked there. One day, I noticed all of the cat pillows in the restaurant and decided to ask the waitress if I could buy one. She looked at me to see if I was serious, and I was, so she asked her manager. He ended up selling it to me for 10 dollars. I felt so accomplished walking around with a weird Chinese cat pillow. I brought it back with me! Another story I have is when I was getting ready for the Monserrat day trip. I was waiting with other students and a guy from the street looked at me. He was interested in having a conversation with me so I did, and we talked about how artificial intelligence will affect different businesses and social interactions. He was appreciative of hearing my perspective and letting him speak, and we shook hands. Immediately thereafter he stopped in the middle of the street and screamed and started speaking gibberish! I'm glad that he didn't unleash his crazy while in discussion, I laughed about it on the bus out of the city.
Pros
  • I improved on my Spanish proficiency
  • I learned how to navigate a city and prepare proper meals for myself.
  • I got to travel throughout Spain and iconic countries!
What other participants should know
  • It was a little stinky and the water was salty, but nothing a water filter can't fix. It's a city so I get the random wierd smells.
  • My roommates got pickpocketed, they talk a lot about it in the intro discussions.

A must do!

I have always wanted to study abroad and heard about CEA CAPA from a friend. Applying to the program was straightforward and easy, they helped with any questions along the way. Once I got to Florence they provided ample resources and help for any needs I had. The classes were great and teachers were excellent. The program also provided multiple day trips around Italy which were a great way to bond with others from the program. The housing was great and right in the middle of the city, I was able to walk to everything. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, highly recommend!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
In Iceland I ate shark, not my favorite thing. The other fish there is much tastier.

Go with CEA!

I loved my abroad experience with CEA CAPA! Madrid is an amazing place for studying abroad. There is so much to do due to the city being so large, but also because of the amount of events that are put on. During my time there I watched one square close to my living arrangement be changed from a Latin Festival, to a Dance Floor at night, to a Christmas Market with an ice skating rink. With CEA you will have support every step of the way. My favorite thing about them is you can email them if you get sick and need help scheduling a doctor's appointment and they will guide you every step of the way! The details of healthcare and visits are very complicated while you're overseas so it was so nice to have that help. We had some issues registering for classes and CEA expressed how much we shouldn't stress and they would figure it all out, and they did! CEA has amazing staff, I couldn't be any happier with my abroad decision.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Immerse yourself in the culture! Don't go to the same chain restaurants because they are familiar and comfortable. Go to the food festivals and meet new people. This city is amazing and you should explore every neighborhood!
Pros
  • Large City
  • Easy to Travel (Big Airport)
  • Amazing Support
What other participants should know
  • Classes Fill Up Quickly (don't go with only one class you have to take)
  • No beach close by

Amazing Program!!

My time in London with CEA CAPA was amazing. I had the opportunity to live in the heart of the city, do an internship, and take very cool classes. My internship placement was excellent, I got to work in my field of study in a company where I met a lot of people from England and from all over the world. The classes at CAPA were amazing with a lot of field trips around the city to enrich the learning experience. The staff at CAPA was always extremely helpful and supportive throughout the semester. I am very happy I studied abroad, this experience helped me grow, expand my horizons, and meet a lot of amazing people and places.

My time in San Jose

I had a wonderful experience with CEA CAPA in the program in San Jose. I was there from September 30th-December 22, and had so many opportunities to experience the culture and environment of beautiful Costa Rica. I took classes that were integral in my experience, including Spanish, and marine biology and ecology. These classes taught me all of the interesting things about the natural spaces in the country, as well as how to communicate with locals, leading to a very meaningful educational experience. I stayed with a wonderful mama Tica, and went on many fun and related trips to my classes as well as just for fun and to explore. The program helped me a lot in the planning and execution of this trip, and I am so glad I went as I feel like it was a positive formative experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be sure to go on all the offered trips, and use your resources to plan your own, as exploring the country is incomplete without seeing the different parts. The Caribbean and pacific coasts are both beautiful and accessible by bus, so get out there!
Pros
  • Easy to get around
  • Friendly people
  • Exciting opportunities

Studying Abroad Was The Best Decision I Ever Made

CEA CAPA was a great provider to study abroad with, they offer plenty of locations and types of programs! I got to not only study abroad but do an internship as well! Sevilla could not have been a more perfect city for me! I had never lived in a city so I chose to go with a smaller one compared to Barcelona or Madrid, but Sevilla has a big city feel. I felt super safe as a female too which was one of my favorite parts! The people in Sevilla are all super nice and there are a lot of young people who attend the local university where I got to take courses at! It was also easy to travel around the rest of Spain and Europe on the weekends! The south of Spain is truly an incredible place with an incredible culture and I couldn't recommend it more.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
To spend plenty of time in the city of Sevilla! When overseas it's so easy to plan a bunch of trips and travel on weekends, especially because it is a lot more affordable to get around in Europe, but Sevilla is an amazing city and I wish I got to spend more downtime just exploring and living like a local in the city. I would do anything to go back and spend more afternoons in the park with my friends, or watch one more sunset by the river.
Pros
  • Great city for Spanish immersion
  • Big city feeling but not too big, very walkable and easy to navigate
  • I felt super safe in this city

Great internship experience

Choosing to participate in the internship program with CEA CAPA was one of the best decisions I've ever made. The CEA CAPA team was very supportive and helped me so much through the beginning stages. It was a little intimidating having to go through the whole interview process and having companies be able to choose me. After every meeting someone from CEA would check in with me and guide me through the next steps. The internship itself was amazing and I truly learned so much about my field and more about Spanish in general. Acknowledging and working through the cultural differences was one of the hardest parts for me, but after a while my team and I got into a good schedule and we were able to work really well together.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking part of the internship experience was meeting my "boss" for the first time. I was really worried that my Spanish wasn't going to be good enough or that I didn't know enough about my field. Once I got to the meeting I tried to be as proactive as I could and ask a lot of questions. I felt like that really helped me stay engaged and also calm down a bit.
Pros
  • Builds resume
  • Great opportunity to learn more about your field
  • Meeting new people and connections
What other participants should know
  • A lot of communication
  • Working all hours of the day
  • Sometimes difficult to find times to meet

CEA Barcelona Review

I had the most amazing experience studying abroad through CEA CAPA in Barcelona. The experience could not have been more seamless. The staff are willing to go the extra mile and are so helpful with everything. I loved my housing and enjoyed my classes. I also liked that we didn't have class on Fridays! I know that you can have an amazing experience going abroad with any program - but CEA is the program to choose. The activities they have available and weekend trips are also amazing. They really do a great job integrating us into the culture.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take advantage of CEA's activites and experiences - they're known as AICAPs.
Pros
  • Amazing staff
  • Fun activities
  • Intriguing classes
What other participants should know
  • Housing is in different areas of the city - so friends may be in different parts
  • School in the most touristy area - this is a pro and a con

English Teacher - St Pere Food Organization in Bar del Convent

I had the most amazing experience while volunteering to teach English. I am not advanced in Spanish speaking but I was able to communicate with the girls I taught and I even got to learn more Spanish while teaching them. I taught three cafe workers who wanted to learn how to better communicate in English to their customers. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot using different techniques and role-play to help them learn English. I also taught the manager who was more advanced in English and wanted to learn grammar rules. The environment was extremely friendly I was always so excited to walk in and I was greeted so nicely. Every time I was offered a drink or food from the cafe. The girls were so kind and even gave me a present at the end of my time in Barcelona to thank me for my help. Overall this was one of my favorite experiences in Barcelona and I could not recommend it enough.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was learning about the girls and their lives and when I tried to explain mine in Spanish I said things in the wrong way and said a funny/embarrassing sentence but they were so lovely that it was very funny.
Pros
  • Form relationships with spanish people and get out of the American bubble
  • Build resume
  • Learn spanish and gain experience in a job you have never done before
What other participants should know
  • In the beginning maybe be connected faster, faster communication
