Best Time of My Life

In one of my classes they asked us to think of some of the best choices that we have made in our life, and what immediately came up for me was going on this program. I was nervous coming in because I knew nobody else but my concerns there were quickly put to rest as IES did a good job of hosting social events and tours that allowed us to naturally meet the others. In the end I ended up traveling with them to multiple places and believe I made some lifelong friends Along with the social aspect of things, IES did a good job at pairing people with the type of internship in the fields that they wanted. With regards to prepping for the program, IES did a great job of hosting info sessions and walking us through the VISA process. Overall a 10/10 experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
The biggest piece of advice, no matter how basic it might sound, is to say 'yes' to any opportunity that comes your way. Whether it was going out with people in the program/coworkers, traveling, going to historical sites, etc. I would always say yes to go. I was of the mindset that I wont ever have the opportunity to be 20 in London with a bunch of people my age ever again so I better make the most of it.
Pros
  • Living in the same place as the rest of the people in the program which allowed for us to meet easier.
  • IES did a good job of giving us events/field trips that would showcase more parts of London and the United Kingdom. I enjoyed the field trips over the typical class and feel they enhanced my academic experience.
  • While our living location may not have been in the center of the city, it was directly on the Victoria line which was easy to access and get to anywhere.
Cons
  • Dirty and rusty kitchen appliances
  • Having to take the class on Friday

Internship Course

I had an overall fantastic experience with IES abroad Madrid with the exception of the Internship course. The actual internship that I had was fantastic, the company was great and I benefitted greatly- however the weekly class, or "seminar" as they called it, might have been one of the biggest wastes of my classmates and I's time. The professor was outright rude to his students, and the actual content on the class was not useful or novel. For example, one of the assignments we had to complete was to create and submit a CV and cover letter in spanish. This sounds like a great idea in theory, except that all the students had to submit a CV and cover letter in english and spanish to even be admitted into the internship program- essentially wasting all of our time. It was also ridiculous that we spent 8-15 hours a week at our internships yet that only accounted for 15% of the grade, while the one hour of class where nothing new/not common sense was taught accounted for the other 85%.I also want to highlight that the seminar was on friday mornings, while no other IES classes were held on Fridays. While I truly believe that IES should be able to schedule classes on fridays if they would like, I also feel that if that is the case, the class needs to be a worthwhile expenditure of time. By having a professor that treated the students as if they had zero common sense or critical thinking skills, many students felt as if their time was completely wasted and the friday morning class was not only inconvenient, but pointless. I heard similar feedback from my peers who also were enrolled in the internship course, so I know my sentiments were shared among others in the program. So while I did have a great experience, this one aspect put a damper on the overall rating I would give the program.

Cons
  • Internship Seminar

Amazing Experience!

Studying abroad through IES Study London was the best decision I've ever made! I had never thought about studying abroad because I was such a homebody growing up. Being away for 4 months felt like something I could never do. IES Abroad does a great job of helping you along the way, but gives you enough room to grow and to do things on your own. I would 100% recommend this program to anyone. London is also an amazing destination with SO much to offer. If you are hesitant about studying abroad, just do it! The memories you make will last a lifetime!

Worst academic program

The academic program at IES Barcelona was awful. To this day I am still fighting a grade appeal. One of my professors didn’t respond to any emails throughout the entire semester and didn’t put in any grades until three weeks after the program had ended. She provided absolutely no feedback throughout the entire semester and provided no feedback or comments whatsoever on any of the assignments. I was upset and complained to IES multiple times during the year and after the program ended. They denied my grade appeal decision with absolutely no valid basis. Apparently IES thinks it’s acceptable to have unresponsive professors who don’t respond to emails, cancel classes frequently, provide no feedback whatsoever and put in grades three weeks after the program ended. Horrible academic program and horrible IES academic advisors. I have never witnessed such an inadequate professor and even more inadequate academic advisors in my life. I am never recommending IES to anyone and instead I am encouraging all younger students in my clubs/organizations on campus to not apply to IES.

What would you improve about this program?
Hire better professors and academic advisors. Start by making sure Professor Laura Puertolas puts in grades within a reasonable amount of time and answers her emails. Hire a better academic committee that reviews the grade appeals. Have the professors and advisors specifically Lee L’Hote take accountability. Not answering any emails throughout an entire semester, providing no feedback, cancelling classes frequently, not entering any grades until three weeks after the program has ended, and STILL not allowing a student a grade appeal after this professors behavior is unacceptable. The academic resource center is a joke and the academic advisors do not care about students concerns. In addition, the housing safety is also another issue with this program. I was never given a physical key to my apartment, just a mobile app to buzz into the apartment. When my phone was dead I had no way of getting into my apartment and sometimes waited outside, alone, late at night hoping someone would let me in. Completely unsafe.
Pros
  • Friends I made
  • Good location
  • Liked the city
Cons
  • Horrible professors and academic advisors
  • Unsafe housing
  • Grading

Best semester of my life

IES Abroad Madrid was by far the best experience I've ever had. I have not a single complaint. I met people that I'm confident I'll be close with for the rest of my life, learned more in a handful of months about other countries that I haven't throughout all my years of education at home, visited sights I never knew existed, and just had an overall unbelievable time. I have no regrets and strongly encourage everyone who is able to take the leap on the opportunity this is. It will change you and your perspectives on life in the most rewarding ways possible

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Writing it all down! I brought a journal abroad that was hard to keep up with amongst my busy traveling and schooling, but I wish I took just a few minutes out of my day to write about my experiences.

Nantes

This program was so much more amazing than I could have ever imagined! I didn’t have much of any information about Nantes but I knew I wanted to go here for a language immersion experience. Everything from the host families to the professors to the IES staff were amazing and so helpful at every step of my semester. I made some of my closest friends on this program and created an incredibly close relationship with my host family. I genuinely enjoyed being around everyone in my program and consider all of them my good friends. Just being able to immerse myself into a different culture truly allowed me to see and experience different ways of life. The French that I learned here is nothing compared to any class I’ve ever taken. It is so fun to see how actual French speakers talk on a daily basis, including all of the fun French slang. In all, I would not trade this experience for anything!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I can out of this program loving so many more foods than I came in liking. With living in a host family your are constantly trying new things and adjusting to this new family’s lifestyle. I ended up eating many classically French foods such as oysters and clams, as well as duck and escargot. Now I can confidently say that I love eating all of these things!
Pros
  • Language immersion
  • New cultural understanding
  • Making the best relationships

The best time of my life in Salamanca, Spain!

Studying abroad in Salamanca, Spain, through the IES Abroad program was an experience that went beyond just academics! It was a transformative experience that enriched both my personal and academic growth. Immersed in the vibrant culture of Salamanca, Spain, I found myself delving deeper into my major in Psychology, exploring it through a unique cultural lens that I hadn't encountered before. The academic aspect of the program was nothing short of exceptional. The classes provided insightful perspectives on psychology and encouraged me to understand it within the context of Spanish culture. This approach added a layer of depth to my learning that I hadn't anticipated, broadening my understanding of psychology in ways I hadn't imagined. Moreover, the Spanish language course and workshops offered by the program were excellent. Despite having taken Spanish courses previously, I found this experience to be far more enriching and informative. The immersive nature of the program not only improved my language skills but also deepened my appreciation for the Spanish language and culture. Beyond academics, the living arrangements were comfortable, providing a supportive environment. Additionally, having access to excellent healthcare options was reassuring, ensuring that any medical concerns were promptly addressed. One of the highlights of my experience was the consistent support and organization provided by the program staff. Their dedication ensured that every aspect of the experience, from academics to cultural immersion, ran smoothly, allowing me to focus wholeheartedly on making the most of my time in Salamanca. The cultural immersion activities, ranging from cooking classes to excursions and music workshops, perfectly complemented the academic curriculum. These experiences deepened my understanding of Spanish culture and allowed me to forge meaningful connections with fellow students and locals alike. In hindsight, my semester in Salamanca was truly the time of my life. It was a holistic experience that broadened my academic horizons and enriched my cultural understanding and personal development in ways that will stay with me forever.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would be more adventurous and try more things in Salamanca instead of waiting until the final weeks!

My Experience with IES Abroad Granada

I loved my study abroad experience with IES. The faculty and staff at the program center were incredibly supporting and friendly, and I had a great experience with my homestay as well. I took classes at IES and at the local university, and received personalized attention and support from professors in both programs. Having access to the mountains and ocean within a short bus ride was incredible, and I loved wandering around the city, exploring different bars, museums, and clubs, and even taking a dance class.

What was your funniest moment?
I have countless hilarious memories of my friends and I laughing as we walked or ran through the streets of Granada. IES Abroad connected me with so many wonderful people who I am now lucky to call my friends, and we truly created bonds that will last a lifetime.
Pros
  • Location: access to mountains, ocean, and city
  • People: met lots of wonderful students at the local university and in my program
  • City life: a youthful and vibrant city, with lots of arts and music
Cons
  • Couldn't have friends over to the house (I was in a homestay)

Living in Seoul

My experience abroad was a lot of fun. I met a lot of people, learned about Korean culture, and was able to take academic courses not offered at my home institution. Seoul is a very student friendly city so I would study at study cafes and explore others. One of my favorite things about Seoul was the food in which I could find meals that were cheap but were also delicious. In Seoul there were many activities occurring there were constant pop up shops, markets, and K-pop events. I was able to go to a pop up shop for the K-Pop group NCT 127 and it was a lot of fun.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
During my time in Seoul there were three unfamiliar things I ate which were jelly fish, live octopus, Yukhoe (Raw marinated beef).
Pros
  • Great public transportation
  • lots of places to study
  • good food
Cons
  • racism/discrimination
  • gender issues
  • can only refill transportation card through cash

Studying Abroad Makes for an International Family

In Nantes, I experienced incredible academics, community, and travel. I stayed with a French family who took me in like I was one of their own. They invited me to events with them, supported me when I took part in a theatrical performance in French (ahh!), and generally were so kind and interested in my life. School-wise, I took classes at the local university where I met college students my age from France. I truly felt like part of the student community. I also took an acrylic painting class at the Académie des Beaux Arts where I met a variety of people of a variety of ages, making my community larger. And finally, I took classes with other IES Abroad students taught by IES staff. Finally, the staff at IES Abroad Nantes is truly remarkable. They care so very much about their students, and are so invested in our health, safety, and happiness. This staff included 4 social and academic “tutrices” our age. They helped us improve our French language skills and also get involved in our Nantes community. They made us a family at IES.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I was so nervous to only speak French with my host family, but they were so patient and understanding - same with the IES staff!
Pros
  • Small but large city, plenty to do but you can walk
  • Amazing public transport
  • Elite staff
