Cork

Ireland is an incredible place and USAC made it even better. I always knew I wanted to travel to Ireland. With the field trips USAC offered, I was able to see the beauty of the Irish countryside and people.

Having our resident director, Mary, there was a great resource for us. She was always there to help and on trips she would tell us stories about her life living in Ireland which gave us a great perspective and made it very special.

The classes I took were incredibly interesting and gave me the opportunity to interact and make friends with the locals.
Overall, Cork, Ireland was the best experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone!

What would you improve about this program?
As always, there are going to be some issues with housing, but the landlord was pretty good about fixing things.

Fun in Panda City

How many times can someone say they touched and got a picture with a baby Panda? Only Chengdu can you have this chance. Where else besides Sichuan can you test the limits of your tolerance for spicy food? And where else besides China can you see people practicing Tai Chi on the corner of a busy street?

The Chengdu program taught me that I have the ability to integrate myself into a culture that is vastly different than my own. The staff in Chengdu is incredibly helpful and wants students to succeed. I was very appreciative of the huge amount of time and effort that they put into making sure students are comfortable, safe and happy. While in Chengdu I had the opportunity to teach English at a school not far from my host university. This opportunity was set up by Wentao, the resident director for the USAC program. I taught one on one classes with six students and enjoyed every minute I had with them.

Chengdu is a huge city, far larger than my hometown of Reno, Nevada. It was overwhelming at first to navigate my way around the many bus routes and subway routes I could take to get to where I needed to go. But I quickly learned that the host university, Southwest University for Nationalities, is perfectly located next to all the major bus routes so I never had trouble getting to where I needed to be.

China is unique in an uncountable number of ways. It is diverse, huge and exotic. But many things about China are also familiar, comfortable and welcoming. You can find anything you would ever need in a huge city like Chengdu. You can also find things you never knew you needed until you see it, like a necklace with your name engraved on a grain of rice.

Every day is a new adventure because so many things are new. The USAC program in Chengdu prepares you to set aside your hesitations and go for it, try something new and if you hate it, well you tried it and you can learn how to move on to something you will like.

Through the process of becoming self-sufficient and independent I realized that it is entirely possible to find my way in a huge city, despite being a small city girl. I became much more confident in myself during my program abroad and I am anxiously awaiting the day that I can return to continue where I left off.

What would you improve about this program?
Well, the pollution was a big downfall, not that USAC or staff can do anything about it. But I would say that the program is structured in a way that allows students to get to know each other at their own pace, no one is forced into anything they don't want to do and so the program itself is as close to perfect as it can get.

The one thing I would change with the program is the language partner program. While it was great to meet with other students from Chinese universities, I did not feel that I was able to find a language partner that would adequately be able to help me improve my Chinese. I was lucky that many students who did not attend USAC related events approached me and offered to help me with my Chinese. My closest friend was someone who approached me outside of a convenience store. He offered to help me with my Chinese after we talked briefly about his experience spending two years in England.

I was very lucky to have him to help me with my Chinese language skills but not many other students were able to have that experience. So I would say that it would be great if at the very beginning of the program, in the first week or so, USAC students were able to meet with Chinese students and start developing those relationship right away.

Tiamo Toriono ( I love you Torino)

Torino is a hidden gem!! There is so much to do and see in the city you will never want to leave. There are plenty of museums to check out, as well as beautiful out door activities. USAC staff did an amazing job of making sure I had a great experince. They were very helpful in helping me with my housing and when I got sick and had to go to the doctor.

Torino is also the perfect location to travel. There is an airport a bus rided away, two train stations and a metro so you never have to worry about getting around.

USAC has different field trips you can take which I recommend!! There are a few day trips as well as two overnight trips.

If your thinking about Italy think Torino!!!

What would you improve about this program?
I would make sure students have more resources for connecting with their professor

It Was All A Dream!

Thailand was everything I had hoped it would be, and trust me, I did a lot of research to figure out what I was getting myself into. I loved the group of people I studied abroad with, the locals were friendly and helpful (and English was widely spoken, so it wasn't hard to get past a language barrier), the natural beauty couldn't be beat, the food was to die for, the prices of everyday life was way less than what I would have been spending back in the states, and overall I learned so much about myself.

The field trips USAC organized were second to none, I really enjoyed everything they arranged for us and it made it really simple to get acquainted with local culture. The on-site staff felt like a second family, and they always tried their best to help us do things we wanted around the city. We had friends from other study abroad programs in Chiang Mai that didn't have nearly as much flexibility as we had with our USAC program, and that hindered them in various ways. I really felt like I was taken care of, but not treated like a child that needed constant watching over.

I am so glad I took the leap to go somewhere new and exciting instead of a program in an English speaking country. You mature so quickly in such a short amount of time, make lifelong friends who are also growing and learning, and you make together memories that will last you a lifetime. Was it all a dream? No, but I'm forever daydreaming about Thailand.

What would you improve about this program?
At the time I was abroad, dorms were strict and no opposite sex could even enter the building of the other. It was hard for all of the group to hang out, because we had nowhere to lounge around, so we had to go to bars or the like. Since then, I heard the buildings are co-ed and it is more of a college dorm experience. This would have improved our time abroad, but obviously wasn't that big of an issue.

USAC Lüneburg

I had a great time in Lüneburg! Lüneburg is a small town near Hamburg with a beautiful old down town. I met so many cool people (most from the us though ;) ) I did not have as much contact with germans because I lived and studied only with students from usac. I wished i had met more germans. The courses were good, i learned so much about european culture and history.

What would you improve about this program?
I did not like that USAC was unable to provide enough housing offers in time. Many of us had to change housing after a few weeks. I would not chose USAC housing again.

Wintermester in Puntarenas

I've always had trouble waking up in the mornings to start my day, but that wasn't the case in Costa Rica. I woke up before my alarm every single time, eager and excited for the day! It was nice starting the morning with my host mom, practicing my Spanish while eating breakfast. My class was challenging, as a language course has never been that demanding for me, but I feel like I actually learned. The dance class was SO much fun. The teacher explained everything patiently and it made everyone that took the course a lot closer. After dinner my friends and I would meet at the beach every single night. There would be times when I was tired, but we only had 3 weeks so I didn't want to waste a single moment not enjoying the beauty that Costa Rica had to offer or getting to know the amazing people I still keep in touch with today.

What would you improve about this program?
A list of other activities students did during their free time and what company they went through would be helpful!

China has my Heart!

I absolutely loved my trip to China. USAC was so helpful and the program challenged me to really learn the culture and go outside of my comfort zone! We had field trips to local cities and major cities throughout China and our program advisor and USAC interns always went the extra step to make sure we had everything that we needed. I would highly recommend traveling with USAC if you want to go abroad, whether to China or any other country!

Fantastic Experience Would Do It Again!!!

This program was the best!!! The excursions the program planned were fantastic, the people were fantastic and extremely helpful, and the area was beautiful! I am so happy to have chosen to go on a study abroad with this program, I cannot say enough good things about this program!! The only thing is that I wish I could have spent more than just a summer session with this program.

What would you improve about this program?
In the Madrid field study the breakfast that was provided was not that great and could have been better because that was the only meal that was provided.

Simplicity at its Best

It's a fantastic program for students who just want to go abroad and do their own thing. It helps fill all basic necessities to get abroad and get credit without any of the unnecessary add-ons like cell phones, an outing every weekend, etc. The USAC staff in Ireland were very attentive in meeting our needs and making sure they were there to support us. This is perhaps most important to have while abroad and I am very grateful for that. This program was the best for me because it was the cheapest, they met all of my basic needs that are complicated to sort our alone, and gave me a great deal of independence in my study abroad experience.

What would you improve about this program?
My biggest concern was housing - USAC did not help with housing much, but relied on UCC to provide us with details and links to apply for housing during our stay. I would have much more preferred a little guidance and aid in securing a home for the semester.

The Best City On Earth!

My expectations with USAC-Prague were blown out of the water! The staff and teachers are great. There was a week excursion offered before classes, and it was the best $400 I have ever spent! It took you to 3 countries, and a small town in southern Czech Republic. The excursions during the program were also great. The living accommodations are amazing. I was lucky enough to have my own room at the apartment I was at, but that was not the case at the other location. Overall, if you are looking for a cheaper program that still has all the frills, and a different place to go, this is the program for you. And Prague is an unreal city. Very cheap, so your money will go far.

What would you improve about this program?
The classes aren't actually at Charles University. I don't actually think I went to Charles University while I was there. Other than that, there is nothing to complain about.
